Loaded Coal Train Passes Manifest At Rock Slide Fence! 3 Track Main Line Right Under Me On Abandoned Auto Bridge. Fast Train with double stack intermodals on middle track. Norfolk Southern trains on the Pittsburgh Line in Cassandra, Pennsylvania. Listen to the hard working DPU locomotives earning their keep. The coal train is loaded and has 2 locomotives on the front, 2 in the middle and 2 on the rear. That was an awesome train!
I stopped at the Cassandra Overlook Park on my way to Strasburg, Pennsylvania. I was on my way to see Thomas The Tank Engine on the Strasburg Railroad. Cassandra has been one of my favorite spots for years. It is just west of Horseshoe Curve, Pa. The first train after the flashback of a locomotive shooting fire is a westbound intermodal train that came by at 4:36pm. It is on the middle track. Don't get this stop confused with the stop when I was returning and I saw the snake. I stopped here coming and going to Strasburg. I noticed that Norfolk Southern changed their road frequency since I was last here a few years ago. It used to be an old Conrail frequency. They switched from 160.800 to 160.875 and I need to make that change in all of my old videos.
Just a short time later I heard chirps on 452.9375 and about ten minutes later a couple of trains came on the two tracks tracks closest to the parking lot. A loaded coal train with 6 locomotives was headed eastbound and a big manifest with 5 locomotives was headed westbound towards Pittsburgh. I was at the right spot to catch the trains passing right under me. That was pure luck. After I filmed those two trains I continued on to Strasburg. I stopped on the other side of Altoona at a town named Tyrone, Pa. I caught the coal train there for a second time. When I caught it at Tyrone it was minus the two locomotives pushing on the rear. They were left at Altoona.
That night I stayed in Strasburg. Don't miss my Thomas The Tank Engine videos and all the other videos that I will be posting from eastern Pennsylvania. I have only posted a couple of them so far.
Filmed Thursday, June 22, 2023 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

@@robertf3479 - ok i couldn't resist doing the cocktail napkin math for that. 1.78MWh per ton of coal with 100 tons per car and (someone counted) 200 cars on that train it is carrying a potential 35.5 terawatt hours of fuel. The Tesla has no issue hitting 4 miles p/kWh so figure around 130 millions miles after accounting for charging losses to fill up the 35.6 TWh battery pack. Using the 240v / 40a wall connector charger from Tesla, it will hit 100% charge in about 406 years assuming we charge it 24/7 with zero downtime.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Runaway diesels were once a common site, don't see many of them now. If the second loco stopped under the bridge, your feet would be toast. Thanks for Cassandra, PENNSYLVANIA. Loved your markings on the bridge. BTW, happy Independence day ❤

There were no runaway diesels in the video, what you are probably referring to is the older clip of the turbocharger failure. The train wasn't a runaway at all, in fact that is uphill.

One of the faults of the GE engines was when the turbocharger seals went out, it pumped engine oil into the engine. Since the engine could not be shut off as the fuel was the engine oil from the turbo, they would burn. A manual emergency shut off valve in the oil line might solve that problem.

That first NS engine with flames out of the stack - those injectors are leaking somewhere - quite a show! That was a great double coal train. Awesome to see and hear all the engines working hard to move all that coal :) I bet those traction motors get a bit warm doing all that work.

Gotta love those GE Krispy Kritters! 😉 I know, I know ... EMDs can have stack and engine room fires too, but it just seems that a higher percentage happen with the GE units. Interesting that the mixed freight had 2 units leading, a single mid train DPU and then 2 SD90-43 helpers. I thought the 90s had been taken out of service, guess not. And then 2 more show up shoving hard on that coal train.

The wires strung across the top of the fences have sensors that detect impact or shock. If one was to try and climb the fence, or throw a heavy enough object at it, it would likely be detected, though they probably have the sensitivity set for a pretty hard impact. They actually use this technology in medium and high security prisons for if an inmate tries to climb the fence it alerts the guards. Great content as always, JT, thanks.

I've lived in the Pittsburgh area all my life (near McKeesport/West Mifflin - I can see Kennywood from my backyard), and never heard about this place! So glad you filmed this place and provided wonderful information about it! It's interesting in McKeesport because the CSX line is on the McKeesport side of the river...matter of fact, the main PAT bus stop in McKeesport used to be a train station, there used to be much more commuter trains around here that don't exist anymore. And right across the river is the Norfolk Southern line. On the CSX line, 90% of the trains (based on observation, in no way is that an official percentage) are slow, sometimes stopped right in the middle of the town and blocking crossings, but regardless, the trains are generally slow there. But the Norfolk Southern line...that also runs right next to a road that is quite easy to speed on, and I've had trains outrun me while I'm going 50mph there. They're usually always fast, and are usually all passed through within a few minutes. *Also about 2 miles down the McKeesport CSX line is Elizabeth, PA, and it street runs for a good portion of the town. It's not on the main street, but like a block or 2 off the main road. And then up above the Norfolk Southern line, hidden in the woods of West Mifflin, is a Class 3 railroad (I think?) that runs between the mills in Pittsburgh, the Union Railroad, which my friends and I used to walk along ALL the time as kids, and then seeing their trains up close giving you that euphoric awe because of how loud and powerful they are. That line strictly uses MP-15 engines, which are much louder than the regular engines on the CSX & Norfolk Southern line (not as familiar with proper engine terminologies yet, so forgive me for that), and they never ran faster than like 5 to 10 mph....and because my friends & I weren't careless idiots, we always ran to safety when we heard a train coming...I'm 30 now, but it always strikes me when people walk along the tracks with headphones on, they're on the phone, they're texting, etc. without any regards to your surroundings. If the trains were faster back then (I'm 30 now), I can't say we'd have been on the tracks as often. But if we could practice common sense and safety precautions on an active railroad at 10-12 years old, there's no excuse for careless adults. But thanks for showcasing this area, it's great to know it exists!!

About the coal train. That had to be the largest I have ever seen. Most coal trains have four manned pushers at the rear. This was extra long and I am sure they didn't want to take it down the "The Slide" east of Tunnelhill with that much weight. The Slide is 3% and quite tricky to maneuver if there is not enough braking into Altoona where the helpers would be removed. Good vid. I will tell my brother about this one since he follows your channel religiously.
@ht24d64
@ht24d64 10 ай бұрын
First of all the slide is not 3%. It is 2.36% at the steepest point. Secondly, those 200 car coal trains are easier to bring down the slide that a typical mixed freight train. Contrary to what you may think, those longer heavy trains come down the hill much easier than a short heavy train. The more axles the more brakes. A coal train is one of the easiest trains to bring down the hill because they are all the same car with the same weight

I remember the video with the engine fire 🔥 🚂. Did the engineer know it was on fire ? Just wondering why he kept going. Awesome trains passing , long coal trains with duo DPU ‘s middle and end! Wow!

"Locomotive exhaust stack fires can occur when diesel fuel is not burned properly or the stack and spark arresters are not cleaned periodically. In such cases, sparks may come out of the stack and could drift into flammable material on the right-of-way or beyond the right-of-way."

Our cat Lina & I look forward to your videos each day! Have a safe and happy 4th! I'm sorry that I missed you while you were here in PA. Maybe I'll get to meet you & Mrs Tooth in person if you plan on coming back through PA in 2024. If you've never been there before, the Harris Tower on the NS mainline in Harrisburg, PA is a great place to railfan. And Strasburg is less than an hour from me.
