Peter, thank your for all your excellent videos. I am a recently beginning woodworker and have binge-watched most of your videos in multiple sittings. Your calm, no-nonsense, and well-informed manner has helped me understand a great many things, separate the wheat from chaff, and helped me develop a progression and set of priorities in my avocation, build my shop with solid understanding of how to accomplish my objectives, and invest wisely. There are many content producers that have lots of flash but little substance, or who don't speak from the experience of a real, long term, working maker. Thank you for all you are doing, and have done.

Hi Peter. Quick question: why did you buy the extrusion (the one from KJN) with a 10mm slot? Does 8mm not fit the Festool clamps and the Dashboard hinge? Sorry if you’ve answered that elsewhere, I’ll watch the rest of the video, just scrolled forward to that bit, but I was assuming that 8mm is the way to go until I saw this.

Note for US viewers. 8mm is very close to 5/16-ths of an inch, (less than a 1% difference). The 80/20 15 series extrusions work well with most things made for the extrusions with 8-mm slots. I’m midway through designing and building my own alternative, and have been researching a bit on readily available options for the US and Canada. And, the Incra miter gauge fence and flip stop are probably going to be used for the fence assembly. I have it on a miter gauge, and the ability to lock precise 32nd inch, or if you set it up for metric 1-mm positions is really handy.

Dear Peter, I know I am quite late to the game but I have dealt exactly with your problem and have a nice solution. The profiles you've shown are the Bosch standard of extrusion. But there is a very similar looking but quite different fitting profile standard made by Item. So, if you shop around at eBay or such search for "Item profile" instead of clicking on those Bosch profiles. A lot of 3rd parties are making these, so you don't need to buy those expensive extrusions from Rexroth or Item. They not only fit a clamp in an 8mm slot but also fit most t-track compatible hardware. You can get a lot of accessoires for both profiles and screw nylon sliders on your hinges if they won't fit. I hope that helps! Regards, Etna.

Thanks. Yes, the Item extrusion is an option, but it still wont tale the Festool hardware. 👍

Hi Peter, I built a 8 x 4 MFT using the KJN 4040 profile and the dashboard bracket. I found the same issue that the supplied imperial hardware only just fit but Rob was kind enough to send some bigger fittings. I was planning on using a 1400mm rail but because of the large overhang I had to buy the bigger 1900mm rail to span the bench.

@@olivermarks1185 hello, yes he did it was a simple swap for the new hardware. The KJN MFT works great. I built a router into one end of mine but I am planning on reducing the length of the MFT by a 1/3 effectively making the router table portion separate to accommodated a table saw and use the MFT as an out feed/ assembly table. I can’t recommend KJN enough.

I had a MFT top CNC'd for me and unfortunately if I use a fence and dogs and use my Woodpeckers square, it is about 0.25mm out of square. So now I am looking at the Dashboard Guide Rail Brackets. With those you can shift the rails and align it to the fence perfectly square. Looking forward to your projects with the Guide Rails. I hope you produce a plan we can purchase for a workshop MFT table with options to use other extrusions besides the cheap Ikea ones.

Very informative video as usual Peter. Is there a front rail support for the festool hinge? Its a shame there is not an affordable hinge for the Dewalt track which I use, although the dewalt saw can run on festool track, so might end getting a short length for my bench.

Thanks Nigel. Only the Festool extrusion - or the ikea curtain track - will work with the Festool rail supports, front & rear. Not aware of any options for alternative rails - most saws will run in Festool-pattern rails, so I guess there’s limited appeal in someone developing one. 👍👍

Thinking out loud here, and off the cuff: That curtain track seems very subpar considering how beefy the Dashboard hinge is (I was going to give you a shout out regarding that since I picked one up myself - have yet to use it though - and hey! You have one!). So. Why not just bolt that Dashboard directly to the bench substrate? Except I also think its' excessive length is going to be a problem for you. If like me you put the track hinge in one spot there really is no need for a track back there (could be missing something though). The stock festool track hinge seems to have been pranged a bit - I can't trust it to lay the track down on the matching pin. Bit of a faff. Very keen to see how this project goes.
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
There’s lots more to come on this build, and many of your questions will be answered then. Lateral adjustment is very useful for the rail hinge, so some kind of extrusion or t-track - or maybe just a router t-slot - does the job. 👍

For a fixed bench in a small space, I wonder why you would need to have the rail hinge slide along a rail. Or, you might consider having the rear rail mounted over a limited span, maybe 20 cm and not over the full length of bench. I understand the need for some adjustability for alignment, but you also have tight quarters and may need the space behind the fence.
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
You don’t, necessarily. But if you have the full length of extrusion, you may as well fit it. Depending on your rail hinge, you could fit it permanently to the bench, or route. T-slot to suit in the bench material. For flexibility though, the curtain track extrusion is excellent. 👍

If your guide track is going in the same location in the shop what about creating a pocket in the wall (old doorway) to allow the Dashboard hinge the clearance it needs? Brilliant info as usual. I use rail dogs + collars with my dewalt track saw, I would use bench dogs and clips but the rubbish dewalt track doesnt work with them. A hinge setup would be nice as the rail dogs system is accurate but its a bit grabby in the MTF style top which means its a bit of a faff to insert and extract, so for doing just one or two cross cuts I often find myself not bothing to use them at all which isn't ideal.

I built a modular workbench out of aluminium extrusion last year. I found there were two different types of extrusion, BR (Bosch Rexroth) and IR (Item) both available from KJN in the UK. It looks like you have the BR extrusion which has the little groves either side of the slot. I used the IR 40x40L extrusion which doesn’t have those groves and found the Festool ratchet clamps work really well.

@10MinuteWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын

Thanks for replying Peter. When you have a moment have a look at the profiles on KJNs website. The Item profile is thicker (has a little return) where grove is which I think will work with your hinge support.

I think that you'll find that 8020 is just the company name and that lots of US based YT videos use the term 8020 as a general moniker when referring to aluminium profile, rather than profile that specifically has those measurements. And of course, 8020 sell profile in lots of different sizes and not just their eponymous namesake.

Because I'll be saving thousands compared to buying a fitted kitchen, I do have enough money in the budget to buy the Makita track saw. I also had the UJK MFT in my Axminster basket, but thanks to your videos, I've realised there's nothing about an MFT I can't build myself, if I can source the extrusions and top. I've done small scale fine woodwork, building guitars, and larger scale rough carpentry, building my Roubo bench and my wrap around work desk in the office. This will be the first time I attempt fine cabinetmaking at a large scale.

Excellent video but, what a confusing subject with all those extrusions fitting this but not fitting that. Everyone has their own way of working and so I have no problem with whatever set up you have - providing you know the options. Is it me do others agree that the whole MFT arena is full of very expensive options. The fear is that newcomers think that they have to splash out huge amounts to get good results. In fact, I would suggest those newcomers don’t buy any MFT bench, accessories at all until they have worked out what suits them and their space. I’m lucky in that my workshop is now virtually 9m x 8m. That’s plenty of room for the table saw as my main means of cutting panels down. I do use the Festool track saw if I want long strips or just to cut panels in half - but that’s more because of the awkwardness and weight of heavier panels (don’t mock, it will come to you as well). I’ve had a MFT style top (1600 x 1000) for maybe 10 years and I still haven’t used the majority of the holes. Because I’ve got one, I can use that as a template for a new worktop but, I didn’t, I would certainly not spend a small fortune on systems such as the Parf guide. As it is, I will probably only duplicate every other hole. I’m on no way being disparaging about new ways of working; I just feel personally that the temptation is for relative newcomers to spend a load of money when that money could be better spent at the beginning of their hobby on the basics; and for free, scouring YT to evaluate who is talking sense and who is talking, and selling, nonsense. Peter is excellent for those whose woodworking aspirations are mainly panel work. You can’t go wrong with Peter on that. If you want to develop into making perhaps more traditional work using hardwoods and even introducing curves, then it’s almost a different branch of woodworking. One of our sons works fitting the insides of very expensive RVs. Almost all of his work is panel work and rectangular pieces. He’s truly excellent at making cabinets, edge banding etc. but he only works with hardwoods at home and has learnt most of that from me. That will teach him.

I went through this same conundrum after buying the Festool rail hinge and naively expected it to fit some normal T Track. I’ve found some extrusion that fits the plastic ‘T profile’ of the MFT hinge/front support perfectly. However… it’s box profile so I need to route a 7mm channel into it which I haven’t got round to doing yet. It is 2mm thick so it’s nowhere near as thin as the Ikea stuff but nor is it as thick as some of the other extrusions. I plan to site it in the 4x2 rails of my bench so I’m hopeful there’ll be enough support around it

I literally just ordered two original Festool 2 meter (comes in pair) rails (front and back MFT/3 style) today, after hours of research. I too have my MFT stationary and wanted it larger, and didn't feel like buying another MFT/3 just to "connect" them with their silly connector rods (still a huge gab between the tables). They cost me around £ 220, and I'll make my own MDF top with the parf guide.

Peter, another great video. I saw another guy make his own channel into his bench frame. He cut a groove and screwed metal strips above and below the groove wide enough to accept tools and hinges, etc. He added t track like yours to the top of the frame. Would definitely stronger than the Ikea track. Thanks again

Have you ever considered wrapping around the mft top, to the front? Obviously not as flexible having holes, rather than a track, but wondering if a mix of both is an option?

"Wrapping around" - I think Craig means to have a few rows of holes on a piece of MDF installed where the extrusion currently is - i.e vertically/ 90 degrees to the existing one - like you often get with bigger welding tables if you want to Google for a picture. I guess you'd still have to have a small bit of extrusion to attach your front locator peg for the track, or attach it in another way

Peter, re the US 80/20 extrusions: 80/20 makes extrusions in two imperial sizes. The 10 Series, 1-inch increment base dimension, with a 1/4-inch slot centered on the inch increments. the 15 Series, 1..5 inch increment with a 5/16 slot. They also make metric extrusions in 20, 25, 30, 40, and 50 Series, where the Series number is the base increment, and the slot size is 1/4th of the base increment rounded to the nearest standard bolt. For example, the 30 series has 8-mm slots, and the 20 series has a 5-mm slot. The 30 and 40 series both have 8-mm slots, and the 50 has ten-mm slots. If you contact them, they could make up a precut kit of all the pieces required to make a frame for a top of your design. Which you could sell on Etsy, and they would drop ship the kit tot eh Us and Canada, and possibly Europe.

Buy the right parts. The cheap extrusion is going to be a constant problem and might at best save £250. You’ve already spent premium money on Festool tools, and you need absolute accuracy when cross-cutting. Don’t step over £s to save Shillings 😅

Hi Peter, a quick question regarding the OEM Festool rail hinges. Does the MFT3 version fit the older MFT 1080? I know the parts numbers for the MFT3 and MFT 1080 rail hinges are different and it's hard to find stock of the older discontinued version for my old 1080. As always, thanks for the great content!

Hi Peter, I was in Ikea today by chance and remembered this video from February 😁. Not sure if the Ikea top brass follow your channel but the 1.4 Meter "Vidga" triple curtain track is now £22 a length (with ceiling fittings that is). Considerably more expensive than the £1 per length you mention in this video, perhaps they have realised from your video that they are missing an untapped market 🤣🤣🤣🤣 just thought you might be interested, take care.

Main reason was to have other clamping options eg I can set a stop in the top track for the rail hinge front support, and still have clamping options with the lower track without affecting the stop in the upper. But generally, just good to have the option. 👍

Greetings Peter, love the channel and the content. I’ve got an extrusion puzzle I’m hoping you can possibly help me with. I’ve got a Bosch GTS1031 table saw. It has an odd shaped extrusion for the front rail. I’m looking for some kind of t-nut to attach to the top slot of the rail, but the inner edge of the top slot is at an angle, instead of the normal half of a hexagon. Any idea what kind of nut would work?

Peter, great review! But, I still am a bit confused on the way to move forward. 😀 I CNC’d my own MFT-style top about 10 years ago, just prior to buying my Festool TS55. It is 3’ x 7’ - I removed a foot in each dimension from a full sheet of MDF. My “MFT-XL” bench also serves as my table saw outfeed table, and outfeed for my planer which resides on a mobile cart. I still just use bench dogs to position rails when using the track saw. I would love to add a rail hinge to the bench, so you have given me some ideas on how to proceed.

I will be interested to see what material you fit the t-track into on the front. Given it is 12mm deep I think 18mm material would leave too little material on the back to secure and support it. I heard of t track pull out before when clamping pieces. I would think you'd need to use at least 24mm, say MDF, so the grove to accept the t-track left 12mm material behind it. Interested to keep watching and find out.

Heh Peter at last your on the trail.😂 As you know I did this a while ago after you helped with the extrusion part numbers for the Festool stuff which I got from Spare Parts World on line and got a repeat 10% discount as well as the rear hinge and front support. Fitted it to one of my MFT/3 benches that I built out of left over fence posts for legs and 2x4 framing, works great. I secured the Festool long extrusions with roofing bolts that fitted the rear slot in the extrusion and very carefully positioned and drilled he fixing holes to the bench frame and it all works splendidly. A little more expensive than Ikea kit but heh ho😂. As I said before can't wait to see yours. Happy building Peter and another great myth busting video.😂👍

I have not seen a Festool oem rail hinge in person and cannot seem to find it on the Festool site but is there a possibility of being able to replace the fitting that slides into the metal extrusion with a 3D printed part that could then be a) reproduced b) sold to other people (like me) who would be interested in such a thing. 250 smackaroonies (which is going to be the scottish currency when we vote for independence :D) for an American import is a bit steep for DIYers.

Great coverage of what's out there. Another option is to just use Dog stops so you don't have to use the flip up rail feature at all. I took a look at my Festool mounting fixings and added a cut down of a rail connector to my back pivoting mount, to make it a bit stronger. Much like the Festool OEM version has that you were showing. Because I never use the back rail and angle protractor, I used a long length of Incra T-Track Plus that I mounted directly to the back on the top of my MFT, then I calibrated the scale in the track. This allows me to have a full 27.5" (700mm) cross cut width on my MFT. If I was looking to start over, I think I would look very closely at some of the offerings from Dashboard as they have some great ideas that they have done with their machined aluminum gear besides their flip up rail. A bit expensive for Europe, but they look robust compared to their competition.
