@daniel4647 Жыл бұрын
You have to ask yourself though, did he ever truly stop believing to confirm this theory, or did he just tell himself that he did? Countless people every day claim to no longer believe in love as tears well up in their eyes. That is not the same as not believing, that is just believing from a different perspective, not unlike those that reject the devil keeps the devil alive trough their faith in it. It would be extremely difficult to truly not believe in our so called physical reality. Rejecting it is easy, but to let go of our belief in it is a totally different matter altogether. In our faith in this world and it's systems, taking away our oxygen would kill us. But if we truly didn't believe in physical existence then death wouldn't be real either, and there would be nothing to fear.

I think the coolest part about all of this is how the "The most tempting ideology is the belief that you have none." and "Is that not an ideology in itself?" lines explain everything. The Narrativist does not see any belief. He can write them all and yet cannot believe them. And yet... he still wanted to experience it. He believed his life could be improved by experiencing it. In the same way "The blind do not see black, they simply do not see" isn't a full truth because the blind can still imagine and visualize structures, the Narrativist does not have no belief, he simply has formed a primitive belief from his experience and orders. Perhaps an objective one, maybe a primitive one, but at the end of the day it is still an ideology. You cannot truly have no belief. The mission was doomed from the start. Edit: I wish to add onto this, something that I'm not sure if I can fully believe and yet with a shuttering breath I must accept... facts are malleable. As the Narrativist said, no amount of facts truly matter to someone if their beliefs can warp it however. Yet here I am, someone who comments far too often, and argues far too often to. I'm a believer of science, I constantly cite sources and try to convince everyone from the mildly deterred to the insane zealots to accept the truth and stop hating each other blindly, often in defense of equality or climate change or anything that we know accepting would only make things better. And yet, in my belief in science not an ideology in itself? I can tell myself I'm correct the entire time but the only thing that affirms that over anyone else are the writings of other people. I _know_ it's true in my mind and yet others don't, and if others don't, does that make it true? Of course it does, we'd die without oxygen. But what if we didn't? The point of this addendum is not that I now accept that I'm a believer in religion just like anyone else. No, that's ridiculous, facts still exist. Reality still exists. But the point is to remove myself from my scientific pedestal. To realize that no amount of science can convince someone who's not open to being convinced. That in a sense, from the believer's point of view, a belief can warp any reality. It doesn't matter if I'm right, if I'm seen as wrong by some people, I will forever be wrong in the view of those people, no matter how many facts I recite. It's truly a chilling philosophy, but in itself, it's a reality. Will that stop me from trying to spread the truth? Of course not. But in the end I'm trying to work for a better tomorrow same as anyone else, it's just that better tomorrow is different for everyone, and even the desire for a better tomorrow in itself is a belief. It's just... something to keep in mind.
@Link_SkywaIker8 ай бұрын
This is perhaps one of the greatest comments I have ever read. It had the selfless sacrifice of telling from ones own experiences on a social platform, and it was honest in reciting what the user believed. I appreciate that this doesn't end with an advocation of any of the philosophies contending with each other. There's a strong hint that everybody just dies because objective reality is a thing, but it's exclusively in the image of the spaceship and doesn't show what's happening with the people. Even with the spaceship image at the end itself, it's unclear if it's being torn apart or if something else is going on, given the bands of light around it. Fiction that leaves its interpretation up to the reader is real interesting. Takes guts and leaves a lot of room for discussion and thought.

i think my favorite part about this is that when the (spoilers) second ventillation is lost, the narrativist *is* affected, even though he is supposed to be immune by not having an idealology/being entirely neutral. I'd guess the message of the story if there is one, is that not having an idealology is one in of itself.
@skyearson7136 Жыл бұрын
I think he was affected the whole time. He was in the captains chair, with the highest clearance, and like he said the captain "had gone mad like the others". His ideology of believing to not have an ideology was a result of the logothesia, not his birth. "The most seductive ideology is having no ideology" is an ideology itself afterall.

I think the idea is that because we never perceive reality, and what we call reality is just a thing our brain creates when interpreting what’s actually there, you can say reality is whatever you want and technically be right. If reality is only what your consciousness believes then if you truly believe it to be true, it is. But the final image shows that even though their reality was happy and joyous and everything was fine, it doesn’t stop the ship from exploding and everyone from dying. Reality can be whatever you want, and you can create whatever substitutions you want to take it’s place, but one day the real thing is going to come and ruin everything all the same because even if it’s not real to you it is still real

Well written stories shouldn't really be compared or ranked against one another - they're all different; they all mean different things to different people, and are all equally valuable. Yet, somehow, I felt this one was your best so far. Couldn't tell you why: might be a trick played by the crisper audio and snazzier visuals, or it might just be that it resonated with an existential horror we all seem to be living through right about now. Anyway, off to listen to "And then we'll be okay" again.

2: They built a true utopia, they had control of everything, they had learned to love one another and respect each other’s wishes. There was no war, privilege was universal, equality a constant. 1: If their world was perfect, and they had control of everything, then why is there nothing left, why did they destroy it all? 2:Well can you imagine anything more pointless than controlling everything? 1: Pointless, so what, they died of boredom? That doesn’t make any sense, they could control everything, but not their own boredom? 2:Oh no, not at all, they could control their their boredom, and their happiness, and their dissatisfaction, and their love. They could experience anything they wanted, knew everything there was to know, but still couldn’t figure out an objective reason for why they should exist for a moment, let alone an eternity. 1:So? 2: So eventually they made the only natural conclusion you could make when you have everything except a reason to exist, given finding that reason was their ultimate goal. They decided they must simply have too much to find it. They took a gamble and built an invisible machine that would very slowly destroy everything, everything until they had destroyed enough to find a reason to justify their eternal existence, at which point the machine would automatically turn off. All their knowledge, all their control, everything. 1: And so where does that leave us, is the machine still running, did the machine swallow up our immortality or did they leave us life after death? is there still going to be an end? 2: Who knows; but being around to ask questions we don’t know the answers to, maybe that was the reason for existing they were looking for, or maybe they lost their gamble and everything will simply end someday as the machine finishes it’s work. I guess we may never know. But I suppose that was the point. 1:But isn’t all that rather pointless? 2:Perhaps, but knowing everything didn’t mean they were perfect, it just meant they were desperate because they had a lot of junk to make use of, to find a *purpose* for. Editor’s note: This is just a dialogue I came up with to represent the optimistic nihilism I was experiencing anticipating how this video was going to end. Hopefully somebody finds it interesting/entertaining

Your videos and books have always been extremely moving and thought-provoking; this was off the charts. The first time I watched this one I kept thinking I had it figured out, but the scope just kept growing until it finally hit me that you were talking about 'narratives' in general, rather than any one specific narrative. Your combination of eloquent storytelling, acerbic wit, and philosophical tenacity is a beautiful and rare thing on this world. That being said, I would not wish that on anyone; it must be impossible to get through the day without an existential crisis. Still, this world would be a much better place if everyone had this level of insight, or at the very least, watch your videos and read your books. Keep doing what you do, if we have souls, they need lessons like this.
