If you're to set the reading mode on your screen or the night light mode, remember to turn it off when coloring 😓😞.

I find it quite annoying to read longer white text on a black background, as some websites have. It effects in an after image with the white and black ruler pattern, which goes away after a short while, but is very annoying. Not everyone might have this, but it might be a reason why grey on black or white on black is less straining for the eyes.

I assume people dont like dark mode because of the custom of books having white background and dark letters, but dark mode is probably most often better when it comes to screens. Its just about how light, or better said, colors work, how we perceive colors and contrast. Subtractive and additive colors, screen colors are additive because they work with created light while we usually see colors in a subtractive way, for example books. Light hits a surface and bounces of it, the color is subtracting from the white light and what we perceive is the remaining color, while on monitors its the other way around, im think Mink knows what im writing about. A monitor is always shinning with light, even when it creates a dark surface, the light is still slightly shinning through. Its pretty hard to create real blackness when a light is shinning from behind through the pannel from the background, thats a common problem for monitor producer till today. The black from a monitor is perceived as a black, becaue of the brightness of the monitor, but compared to true black it would be pretty far off. So in order to create a better black, monitors are pretty bright. Of course, looking directly into a bright light for a longer period of time would be eye straining, reducing it will obviously help, even when some people might think white with dark letters are better to read, looking straight into a light is always eye straining. But also a too high contrast is eye straining, thats why its generally better to have a slight grey with black letters instead of 100% bright and 100% dark. Such a disparity in color brightness creates intense light levels that overstimulate the eyes when reading text. This causes the eyes to work harder to adapt to the brightness. An example that illustrates this concept is when we turn on a bright light in a dark room. Such a drastic change in light conditions is harsh to our eyes. But if we turn on a dim light in a dark room, our eyes adapt to the change easier because our retina isn’t overstimulated by such a sharp increase in contrast. So why is dark grey better as black when it comes to white letters on a screen. A research study found that “black text on a white background overstimulates the OFF ganglion cells while white text on black background overstimulates the ON ganglion cells.” The study advises against reading black text on a white background due to the striking effects of contrast polarity. A pure black background creates as well a strong contrast. This makes eyes work harder and open wider since it needs to absorb more light. When this occurs, the white letters can bleed into the black background and cause the text to blur. This effect is known as “halation” and it affects users with astigmatism, which people of all ages could have. In other words, a to high contrast is eye straining as well, especially when the white letters are created by light (additive) and not subtractive.

Thank you a lot for the additional facts! Some of them I didn't really know or consider before. It seems like you know a lot about this topic. I appreciate that you share your knowledge here~

@@Mink-tDR thx. Ive tried some of the mentioned things in the video but personally i dont like night mode because of the color shift, especially when i need to see colors corectly. Ive tried glasses wich dont shift colors but still reduce blue light. But i like wearing headphones and listening to music when working on my PC, they tend to press on the glasses and it starts to hurt pretty fast. Some one suggested ones to me, a red light in the room might help with melatonin, but i simply supplement Melatonin. Didnt try the red light so far, "Warmlichtlampe" i think is what its called in german. Or amber light "bernsteinlicht" how ever, i dont know the effectivness of them, but probably worth a try, especially for people who have sleep issues. Melatonin is also a very important hormone when it comes to stress reduction and regulation of stomach acid, some people probably have more often heart burn because of absense of enough melatonin. A big problem is, being unable to sleep at night often prombts people to use some sort of media to get distracted, mostly a screen with blue light, and that really doesnt help it.
