On important thing to note is that regardless of the mode you're using, the lighting conditions of the room play a big role in eye strain. If you have a single bright object (the screen) in an otherwise dark room (for example if you're checking your phone before bed) you're going to end up with more eye strain than if you're in a lit room. This is because the contrast between the bright screen and the dark room cause your eyes to constantly switch between narrowing the pupils to block light from the screen and widening the pupils to take in more light from the dark room. This can be easily mitigated by simply turning on a lamp to light the room. Even if the room isn't as bright as the screen, it can reduce the contrast enough to significantly improve eye strain. When I was young I would always play video games late at night with the lights off and I would find that I quickly reached a point where my eyes were burning so much that I had to stop playing. But since I started leaving a lamp on I've been able to go all night without any issue. Definitely an important factor to consider if you're concerned about eye strain, just make sure the lamp isn't directly in your field of view or it could cause the same issues you're trying to avoid.

A better tip is just to not stay up all night playing video games. But for real thanks for the tip.

yes, and no. at night it's better to use dark mode since your surrounding is dark and having the screen blasts your eyes with white pixels can be blinding at night. but it's the opposite during the day since your surrounding is bright, so people should use light mode to read texts easier as opposed to reading white on black, which can cause strain to the eyes.

While you are correct, you can also use room lights at night and have screen surrounded in bright background and this way light mode is still better. Unless it's a LCD with local dimming zones witch some TVs have. And then it would only work well with full-array backlight and alot of zones and not crap edge-lit displays like most TVs are. Dark-mode only saves battery for OLED screens where each pixel is an LED; but for LCD screens and "LED" screens, the LED backlight is still on even for dark areas (though more advanced screens might have "local-dimming" which turns off sections of the backlight). The LCD just acts as a mask to block the light from the LED backlight. Of course OLEDs have their disadvantages as well like good old-fashioned burn-in.

I'm old enough to have started with monochrome displays with dark background. When I added a physical switch to my home computer to invert colors, dark on white background, it was a huge benefit to readability and eye strain, and I used it all the time, except (for obvious reasons) in a chess program. While this benefit has been reduced with better screen technology, I still find light background to be much better. When "team dark" acolytes talk about "searing white light", I suspect that this is because the brightness was turned up to cope with the worse readability using dark background. While this makes dark background "less bad" for readability, it does mean that the same brightness is not well-tuned for just switching to light mode. Arguably, dark background can make good sense around video content dominating the display. Of course, the battery life factor is real, but only with OLED (or similar) displays. With the still rather widespread LCD displays, the full backlight is turned on all the time, and blocked by individual LCD pixels to display dark.

1:00 The Xerox Alto did not have a color display. You can do light mode on a (B/W) monochrome display. Likewise, the Apple Lisa and original Mac. Light mode is correlated with bitmapped displays rather than with color CRTs. However, even some character-based terminals (such as Digital's VT100 and its successors) could do "reverse video" -- i.e. light mode, though it was rarely used.

I use dark at night and light at day. I've heard it's bad to use dark mode in bright environments. It's hard to use dark mode at day too. But at night I also use a filter app which allows me to make my brightness even lower and add redness to avoid eye strain

Dark mode does not save battery life. Using a darker palette is not the same thing as decreasing your brightness. Since UX designers don't use pure black very often, it's not like those pixels are turned off

My preference for a long time for large portions of text has been black text on a GRAY background... all the advantages of light-mode but without the large expanses of blinding white. I did this specifically because I noticed I had an easier time reading dark on light than I did vice versa... but I also really have a problem with large blocks of bright colors & eye strain. Far as dark mode goes, I have a preference for it on CLIs... but that might just be from familiarity LOL. I've also occasionally made the text gray for CLI, which after watching the video I'm guessing would help deal with the contrast/light bloom issues

1. Good ambient lighting gets rid of that issue. 2. That's an issue indeed. 3. Don't use full white text on a full black background. If you want a #000 background use gray text.

I can't read white text on black background sites like HardOCP for more than a minute without it causing me serious eye strain. Imgur is okay though where I'm mostly looking at pics and short comments. I prefer light mode on my phone but turn the brightness down and the phone blocks blue light near bedtime.

Talking about skeumorphism - I worked on one of the very first Word Processors back in the late 70's called a "Lexitron," and it was so skeumorphic, it actually had A ROUND MECHANICAL KNOB ON EITHER SIDE OF THE (vertical) SCREEN like on a typewriter that you rotated to slide the document up or down on the screen from page to page!

I just use a blue light filter. On my computer, I use it the whole day, although it is set to get reduce the blue light more at night than it does during the day. I am photosensitive and dark mode really hurts my eyes. That seems weird, since it's less bright light coming at me, but I think it's the contrast. With light mode, my eyes can adjust better. However, I always feel the pain if I happen to be looking at my phone or computer when it switches from more filtered to less in the morning.

Dark mode, along with blue light reduction (i.e. night mode) helps to preserve night vision. For a pilot, this can be a huge benefit to one's health, as not being able to see could have some pretty serious consequences.

Slight note on dark mode saving battery life: With a pure LED based display like OLED, this is certainly true. However, with ordinary LCDs, the pixels being on or off is almost irrelevant, with the brightness of the background light being more important by far.
