Dark mode is a wonderful thing. My various eye conditions make my eyes unusually sensitive to light and switching from light to dark mode is like jumping into a pool on a hot summer's day. It instantly makes using a computer, tablet, phone a much easier task which is important considering my profession requires constant use of all of these devices.

I use light mode. It is easier for me to read personally. If i use dark mode, i find text too difficult to see contrast in, the dark background bleeds into the text / font for me.

Looks I am not alone. For me who is generally in a brightly lit room, light mode works better.Plus I also have to read harcopy where it is by default light mode i.e. Black text white background. I felt that dark mode has done me more bad than good.

Dark Mode is better for bright screens late at night, especially while driving. I needed it like a decade ago driving a taxi with iPads when they were newer but Apple didn't give us a dark mode or even a temperature control. I hated Apple for that because their iPads were stupid bright driving taxi cabs at night when I needed them for GPS and Maps.

Same for me! Light text on dark background makes the letters somehow “glowy”, like the edges are not defined enough and it really bothers me. Text is perfectly on focus when it’s dark on a light background 😮

I love Dark Mode!! I use it on all of my devices (PC and phone). I find it much easier to read and less strain on my eyes. I have Thyroid Eye Disease from Grave's Disease, so I have blurry and doubled vision in both eyes due to excessive eye pressure. It also helps that I am awake at night, when the ambient light is naturally lower and I can turn on as few lights as needed throught the night. I find that my vision is much poorer when I am awake during the day and the ambient light is much brighter or I'm indoors in a brightly lit area, like an office building. Hooray for Dark Mode! 🎉😊❤

I use dark mode + reading mode. I also take a short break every 20 to 30 minutes. I try to walk around and look at objects that are further away from me. I also follow the 20-20-20 rule and I have noticed the difference. At 38 I think I still have a good eyesight.

At 37 I just had a DoT CDL physical test and I still have 20/16 vision, but I also spent 10 years driving a taxi cab at night time and being stuck without Dark mode or temperature control for less blue light on iPads and other screens, I absolutely hated it. It wasn't until the last 4-5 years when super bright LED's in headlights became the main villain now instead of just bright iPads or phones. Now I don't drive at night anymore but if I did I would be so angry with everyone using super bright headlights constantly.

I use dark mode wherever possible as I do feel less strain on my eyes when I do, the same for the blue light coating on my glasses. Whether or it's just a placebo, I don't know but I do feel that both of these help me.

I like to set it to Dark Mode as I found that if I left it on Light Mode I would start to get this Flare Vison as I like to call. And I think the name pretty much says it all, and it always scares me half to death, as I always think that I have finally lost all of my vision after temporary used that bright screen. just before going up to bed or whatever. And another advantage that I like to use Dark Mode is that some times I just need to use my phone or iPad with out the lights on as it is pointless to turn the lights on when using it, as I might only need to use it for maybe ten or less minutes. And the last reason why I like to use Dark Mode is that it just simply makes feel that I'm conserving my phone's battery power.

The major problem with dark mode is the weird hype and toxicity around it, from people mocking and shit talking light mode users to developers not supporting light modes or light background themes. For some people dark modes/themes are unusable, and they get some completely unnecessary and extremely weird hate and artificial obstacles. I've heard from low vision and blind folk that they're having a lot of trouble because increasingly apps default to dark modes or even just leave out light modes. Dark and light "modes" are new-ish features in most operating systems, true, but they existed in the form of themes for decades. Can't but miss the good old days of easily tweaking these things to your liking and needs, and having nice high contrast themes to go with them. Another problem is, light themes seem to have come to default to very bright, almost-white backgrounds. I find it more comfortable to use off-white or grey backgrounds. Ultimately I find that dark modes/themes are more strain inducing for me compared to light themes, and I connect that to my having a rather high degree of astigmatism (5 and 3 degrees). But sometimes dark modes/themes feel more comfortable and I use them for a few days. So I don't have that strong of a preference for either, but I default to light modes and themes also because they work fine outside. Unless you have a high end screen, dark themes are much harder to see under sunlight. So instead of switching back and forth, i leave it in light mode.
@Sanutep

I am one of the view that dark modes are more difficult to read and I definitely agree the stupid hype and mocking is not helpful for what is ultimately a preference and health choice. I also am finding that because of the dark mode dogma, software is being developed with light mode as an after thought, when it used to be a default. Example was for many years, Discord had a unuseable light mode, because they defaulted to the harshest white, and the blackest black, when, good light modes use slightly off grey whites and not the deepest blacks

Interesting. I distinctly remember back in the late '80s/early '90s when computers went from white text on a black background with character displays (e.g. MS-DOS) to black text on a white background with GUIs (e.g. Windows) that the exact opposite was claimed - the white background _reduced_ eye strain. Something to do with the iris opening too far with the black background and the white text being too bright because of this, or something like that anyway...

That was only applicable to old CRT monitors because they draw line by line with an actual ray, which in itself puts a lot of stress on the eyes because of the underlying flickering. OLED and LCD work very differently to this

I use dark mode paired with green weak deuteranopia color filter. I am color blind and it allows me to be able to tell between colors such as purples and blues, and greens and reds and brown when I normally wouldn't. Something else interesting that I notice is that reading books strains my eyes more than using a screen.

I have visual snow and photophobia so using dark mode definitely helps a lot with my sensitivity to light and preventing migraines. I'm already near sighted and have astigmatism in both eyes so I cant really see anything further than 10 feet away. I only use screen devices for 4-5 hours a day and I work as a delivery driver so I'm outside quite often. I just wish there was a cure for my visual snow tbh, that probably bothers me the most seeing static everywhere and getting migraines 2-3 times a week.

Interesting. For some light print on a dark background can make the words jump but I guess everyone will be a bit different here. The different types of eyestrain are interesting - it's been quite a big thing for me. I had all three and quite severely at one time. I have longsightedness, dry eyes and a convergence problem and now have glasses and help for the dry eyes. At the time I had none of these and I can tell you that each problem was interacting with the others and making everything exponentially worse. Ouch!

Antonio, is reading at night using a blacklight is bad for my eyes? I asked my local optometrist and she was not able to answer me. Technically, I understood that it’s not the UV wavelength that is hitting my eyes, it’s the wavelength re-emitted by the paper material after it have been exited by the UV that hit it. Just asking because it’s less disturbing for my wife than using regular light that is reflected everywhere in the room. Can it be a video idea? Thanks, have a nice day.

I was using for few months an old LCD monitor with CFLL backlight and honestly i think i was getting sleepy quicker. If you dont know much about CFLLs - they have completely different light spectrum than LEDs, and yes, they are producing way less blue light. Ofc we are not using them for a reason.. they have some problems, but maybe we should look for a new light emitting tech? - or maybe new display tech, bc blue light emission is only a problem of OLEDs and LED LCDs.

Dark Mode.. I have been using Dark Mode with programs or wanting it in Windows or on devices like the iPad since at least 2013, over 10 years ago. I drove a cab at night with an iPad for GPS and Skype/Discord for communication for 10 years, and driving at night without dark mode or a way to turn down the brightness well enough was a total nightmare (or just no way to change blue light levels like with f.lux on Windows because there was a time when you couldn't do that on Apple products like the iPad). Thankfully it is an industry standard, but that wasn't the case even just a few years ago. It was a nightmare a decade ago for people who use computers or needed devices for maps or whatever driving a night (we didn't have ridiculous bright LED's for headlights everywhere back then so it was just the screens I hated, now driving at night is a nightmare for different reasons like those stupid ultra bright LED's people just HAVE to install in their cars, and yes everyone hates you guys and gals for using them). I remember wondering for years why Windows 10 didn't have a dark mode for File Explorer or even Internet Explorer/Edge. Now they all have it, but for a long time I had to use a program to turn on Dark mode for File Explorer, it was annoying as heck because it did not always work. What is ironic is even in the early 1990's my dad would wear orange sunglasses because he knew that blue light could give you headaches in the daytime. It wasn't a problem with screens back then since we used CRT's and didn't have phones constantly on us, but now it is something we talk about all the time because we are ALWAYS looking at screens, or staring at stupid bright LED lights.

1:10 This is completely backwards. Because white text on a black background is very uncomfortable to look at, dark mode themes use light-grey text on a dark-grey background instead, thereby *reducing* contrast, not increasing it. 1:55 Lowering screen brightness achieves the same thing more effectively, since you're not going to get flashbanged by a bright image showing up on your otherwise dark screen - especially since, in my experience, people who use dark mode usually turn screen brightness *up* to compensate, which defeats the point. And lowering screen brightness reduces power consumption as well - not just for OLEDs, but for every type of display. 7:30 Blue light filtering glasses are completely pointless when free software like f.lux and nightshift exist, which allow you to prevent the screen from producing blue light in the first place. They're a scam as far as I'm concerned.

Lowering brightness decreases good contrast, which is already less than ideal in screens. Dark Mode allows you to increase brightness to get good contrast while avoiding too much luminance which creates eye discomfort for some and photophobia resulting in migraines for others. Blue Light is the worse for people with migraines photophobia. While some people just have some headaches as result of tired/dry eyes, others get migraines which is accelerated by high luminance. That is what a lot of blog posters claiming having scientific research in favor of light mode do not get.

Dark mode is as old as computers themselves. With low refresh rates of 50 to 70 Hz you'd feel horrible flicker if the screen was bright. I remember how dark on white was promoted as looking more natural similar to physical paper. The contrast of a screen indoors with curtains drawn should simply be turned down. Outdoor time only seems free superficially. You need some things to do outside and some resources: a house with a garden, outdoor clothes subject to high wear from hiking or similar activities, be accepted in a social group to be outside in a city environment. I got myopia when I moved to an apartment after a disastrous situation around 14 years old. It wasn't even possible to leave the building past youths drinking and laughing at me. I use normal mode with a positive color scheme, mainly with old software on my computer. Blue light is a cash cow for web influencers. Why is the room drenched in blue movie light on the stock video, lol. Remember the blue LEDs that appeared in mid 2000s? I have one on my network router that I could try to read under.

Dark mode isn't exactly new, my first Android phone 12 years ago was "dark mode only", later it gained the option for light and dark modes, then became light only and finally it got back the option of a dark mode. Earlier versions of Microsoft Windows also gave users plenty of customization options, but recently Microsoft embraced this stupid trend of removing customization features and dumbing everything down. Heck, even for web stuff, you could change the default colors way back then, then later came CSS and the option of letting the user chose between different stylesheets... But this was always buried down in a bunch of menus that the average user never clicked and most webdesigners who knew about this stop bothering after a while, although I suspect most never knew there was an option.

Didn't watch this video as the the answer seems to me is very simple. What is white? In simple terms, white is ALL colours at once (red, green and blue on digital displays). Blue. Blue light. Is no blue light better than tons of blue light? Obviously. In a dark room, is blasting your eyes with intensive white light good for you? Great! Now just take a flashlight instead. So why try to waste 11 minutes of my life for this.
