Tbh I couldn’t give a shit about the next Batman. This universe is made for gripping crime dramas like this one. It fits the theme of this Gotham and I love how we got a little exploration into the falcone Maroni rivalry and we should get more series/movies that are centered around organized crime in Gotham. The batman was a boring snoozefest but was centered around the same concepts as this show with a Batman storyline. It doesn’t work as well. I think this is the first Penguin since Batman Returns that I felt actually deserves to be in Arkham. I think he genuinely deluded himself into thinking his mother still loved him and that final scene with the prostitute dressed as her was wild. This man is not right in the head, every other incarnation I've seen was just a mob boss that ran a club and walked funny
@themadtitan7603Ай бұрын
Usually it's because Penguin is one of the sane villains despite all his depravity who ends up locked somewhere like Blackgate. But this Oswald one could make the case that he belongs with the rest of the freaks at Arkham. They talked about him having this crazy intuition for rejecting reality & accepting his lies as the truth. In his mind, his mother didn't mean what she said, maybe she's having a bad day & that was her disease talking. Just like he really didn't kill his brothers & his mother's tear was one of happiness for his accomplishments. This could potentially make him the most dangerous Batman villain in this universe because of the combination of his ambition, the power he now has, his propensity for violence, and his ability to totally delude himself into his reality.
@recoveringintrovert717Ай бұрын
See, I disagree. Oz was asked by his mother to kill her before she slipped into a state where she was essentially a vegetable and no longer in control of herself. Him keeping her alive is her punishment from him for what she said. The version of his mother that Eve was dressed up as, that's his way of deluding himself into still thinking he's a good guy. That he's looking after his mother, who is proud of him. That way he gets the praise he always wanted and he gets to punish his mother for not giving it to him at the same time.

After Vic killed that Drop thug, and Oz confirms that Vic "took care of business", Oz then notices that Vic isn't ok with what just happened. @gevoianАй бұрын
minor spoilers it was very unpredictable and i loved it, i thought either the kid leaves, or betrays oz but he remained loyal, and then 10 minutes before that scene in the finale i knew what was coming, but it still was so satisfying because u realize the kind of person oz is in the last 2 episodes, he doesn't truly care about anyone except himself and how people will view him. he didnt even care if his mother would lose her finger since he wants his image to remain as that neighborhood gangster that helps people around like rex/ who was his idol prob.

I think the characters in this show were the perfect mix of realistic Sopranos-type evil and Disney Villain-type evil. The show shifts seamlessly between these uncomfortable moments where you can see parts of yourself and people you know in characters committing these heinous acts, and the horrisatisfying scenes where you just enjoy watching a truly despicable villain commit evil in the most extravagant way possible.
@mrcheesemunchАй бұрын
To sum up my thoughts on The Penguin in this show "I hate the things he does but I love to watch him do them!" So refreshing to have a series about a bad guy who is just bad but in a way you can actually understand, without being cheap sympathy bait. I like a misunderstood villain on paper but good lord it's done wayyy too often now. The only thing misunderstood about Penguin is whether or not he's even really human under that shell, holy crap my dude.
@themadtitan7603Ай бұрын
@simonlegosson7082 It's the right middle ground between a grounded crime drama depiction & heightened action superhero evil type nefarious that gets crossed over into the latter when Oz cements his status as mythological, evil supervillain.
@stuartbagley2586Ай бұрын
They named him as a villain rather than anti-hero. Can’t really think of any other shows or movies that have done that. Usually there is antagonist worse than the protagonist, but not so much here.
@themadtitan7603Ай бұрын
@@stuartbagley2586 Even in The Sopranos, the antagonists almost each season would be more overtly despicable and/or hostile than Tony. Even in S6, Phil might not be as bad as Tony, but fits the latter & it makes the audience root for Tony against him to get it.
@rasmusn.e.m1064Ай бұрын
Loved how Oz's arc with us, the audience, mirrored exactly what he did to all the other characters in the story. We watched him do it all and rooted for him the entire way because "He has a good heart, he's doing it all for his family and Vic even though it looks bad on the outside." Only in the end, when it's far too late, we realise, oh no, he's just an egotistical psychopath when it should have been obvious the entire way. Made me empathise a lot more with those people who fall in love with charmers like him. Never fully understood it until now.
@jamesmarshall6619Ай бұрын
that was the part I liked even though it made for a depressing ending. It didn't try to make it seem like he was justified for his terrible behavior, his brothers didn't come off as abusive or even mean, just normal brothers. No mother that was controlling and abusive, just what looked like a loving family living in some tough times but still nothing out of the ordinary and he was just an awful person and always was kind of that way. He had some aspects of his personalities that were admirable but overall, just an awful person that makes him a great villain.

I thought they humanized him in the sense that he came off as a nuanced, 3-dimensional person while not making sympathetic or some misunderstood anti-hero at all. And that's what makes him being a pure evil supervillain even better.
@4u2nvHock3yАй бұрын
They humanized him to the point where it feels real. But also made him a villian to the point it feels real. If Oz keeps Vic alive. It goes against who he is. He kills him at the end. Getting the most out of vic and finishing him off at the very end when he serves no value. But if penguin just killed him at the start it would be too evil and dumb.

One of my favorite details about the ending of this show, specifically highlighting your point of the writers stripping away any "good" in him throughout the series, is at the end when his mom sheds a tear looking out of the window. Oz takes it as her being happy he finally "made it" and gave her what she always wanted. But what she had previously asked for is to be killed if she were to ever end up in that vegetative state. She's not happy. She's miserable. And he keeps her that way for his own pride.

Holy carp, this show was excellent. I am so glad I got to watch these not as a binge, but with a week in between to let the episodes percolate in my mind a little bit. Something to look forward to on the monday morning (they were released on sunday, but because I live in the EU that would usually be very late at night for me). Excellent acting, great writing, and no attempt to make the character actually a 'misunderstood anti-hero'. Nah. Cob is vile. And so much more compelling because of it. He has layers that make him less predictable, but in the end, he's out for himself.

Puss N Boots 2 showed that there was still a place for irredeemable evil. The Penguin gave us a great one.

I think a couple reasons for Batman to be missing from this... 1) they gave an outstanding depth to Gotham City with you having almost a multi-level understanding of how the city runs, which even in the Batman was kind of addressed from the concept that he couldn't be everywhere 2) in a Batman movie it was made explicitly clear that Bruce Wayne was a very underdeveloped person because he only saw himself as Batman. And what does he need to do to build the interpersonal skills to actually come out as somebody who can be a public figure 3) how much work is he having to do to truly grasp the Wayne industry given that he made it clear that he really didn't take much interest in it? These are just a couple things that I thought about while watching it as very realistic and valid reasons why you're not going to be seeing Batman in the day-to-day organized crime operations

This show was amazing. The finale topped it off. Oz rose up and got to the position that he and his mom wanted. He even gave his mom the apartment she asked for after she stabbed him. I love how he is a classic honourable gangster. Oz even killed Vic because he was weak and clingy like a child. Vic wasn’t ever going to be a good gangster because he’s a follower and not a pusher so Oz didn’t want to babysit him. His death was satisfying and earned. A lot of people don’t understand gangsters and it’s a shame. Oz is a badass and Collin Ferrell is a great actor.

after watching the show i realized that this is DCCU answer to MCUs daredevil in the form of the penguin being the company's KINGPIN. and if you put both characters in comparison you start seeing some similarities.

Cristina Miloti as Sofia Falcone was the true MVP of this series.

This was a tremendous show, and I have to admit, but for this review (which I didn't watch all of before finishing the series) I didn't plan to watch it. Sure glad I did so thanks Chris for putting up this review quickly and encouraging people to watch it. The Penguin was an outstanding series!
