I had a different theory, I went the opposite way on a key point here that Alice (Nicole K) smokes pot and starts a fight, why? Because she's just in a bitchy mood? This is your theory. Maybe because she's bored because too much time on her hands she should get a job? Also your theory. My theory is that she is actually on the verge of 'let's get divorced', she's desperate at the state of the marriage, even though he thinks things are perfect. This happens in marriage. How does it happen? In this case, she has a shameful desire that she doesn't want to admit -- to get her freak on, maybe to visit a sex club every month or something, just a little variety. She doesn't know how to broach the matter w/him, but the issue is a 'real' issue. It's brutal honesty, not some random attempt to start a fight just because she's high. Different movie. Also, I can roll in a whole theory about the point of the black mass craziness -- he sort of imagines that the only people who would go to a sex club are pretentious people who think they are above normal life, so he's trying to imagine who would want group sex -- they must be wealthy satanists. But the costume shop also is clear to me, this grubby merchant pimps out his daughter, doesn't have to be part of the illuminati to be decadent, it's easy. A costume is cheap. The reason for two visits to the costume store is to show the chaos when somebody is in denial and thinking like a square -- the father is 'what is this!?!? WHAT IS THIS!?!?!?' and everybody is yelling and running around. The father is also oblivious as to why Tom Cruise might be there to rent a costume, but the daughter is not. Later, when the father is pimping the daughter, this is 'theoretically' horrible, but peaceful and sociable 'actually'. The point is subversion of sexual morality. Kind of anticlimactic -- but I think I can explain plenty this way, the marital fight and on from there. Simply the movie has lots of in your face sexuality too, does that make it a *bad* movie? Is sexuality bad? What about group sex tho..? A message movie.
