There is a federal class action lawsuit in federal court, it was dismissed on summary judgment in favor of EZ Pass, and the dismissal is being challenged on appeal.

EZ-PASS is a horrendous scam with every licensed driver in the Tri-State as their victims. I want to take EZ Pass to court and put their call in phone service on cross examination. The entire cross examination will consist of staying on hold for anywhere between 2-8 hours before someone answers the call. The judge will have to recess court 2-3 times before the witness examination is thoroughly completed.

Tell ez pass to send you a bill. Trust me on this. Because what constitutes a bill is when value is exchanged. You can only legally and lawfully pay a bill, not notices. Ez pass sends you a notice not a bills. They always say “payment due”. But they need to send a bill. Take it to court and pay money to fight it, even if it costs a lot to file. You know Staten Island was "allegedly" impounding cars from people who weren't paying tolls. I don't know if it was a scare tactic or if it actually happened but if it did, is it legal to do that??? First off, let this be a lesson to anyone who sees this - NEVER co-sign a loan. This includes student loans and Parent Plus loans for your kid's college. When someone needs a co-signer, the bank is literally telling you that they know the person is not going to re-pay them. So the co-signer gets 100% of the risk with 0% of the benefit. That said, the only way tolls are accruing under your name is if you are not only the co-signer, but also either the registered owner, or the co-registered owner. Clearly your niece is highly irresponsible and has no respect for you. Here you are, helping her out with a vehicle, and she is causing you serious legal problems. The FIRST THING you need to figure out is whom the vehicle is titled to. It can be registered to you but not titled to you, or you can be the titled owner, or the co-titled owner. If you are the sole titled owner guess what, it's your car not hers. This can cause you untold problems, and even if you are just on the registration it can cause you problems, because for example, suppose she stops paying the auto insurance - guess what - the DMV suspends YOUR license as a registered owner of a car without insurance. If she gets into an accident YOU are liable as the registrant of the vehicle. If I were you I would have a family meeting, make her produce the registration and title, and then do what you have to do to get your name off of the title and registration, and also make her pay the damn tolls. You'll still be a co-signer of the loan, but that's a separate issue. If the car is titled solely to you, it's your car so she has little leverage you can just take it from her. If it's co-titled no so much leverage. Whatever you do, you need to put a boot up her ass and fix this thing ASAP.

I've literally been battling bladder and kidney cancer and I literally had my kidney removed and the cancer has come back every single 3 months, the only hospital that is able to help me is in Philadelphia and my only option to getting to that hospital for my treatments and for my surgeries is to take the turnpike, I tried making conscience efforts to pay down my balance but they wouldn't accept the money that I was offering and I couldn't afford to pay any more, and it was either choose to not get my surgeries and my chemo treatments and die or keep taking the turnpike and racking up the fees I've tried calling them so many times to make an effort and they won't accept it and now Pennsylvania suspended my registration and I've been forced to cancel my appointments and now the cancer has come back for the 6th time and I don't have any way of getting my treatments anymore and they said that if I wait any longer it's going to spread deeper into my muscular tissue, this is so sad that I don't know what to do I feel so helpless

I had a few violations from 2014-2019, for around $750. I got letters from Peter Maranis office harassing me and saying with his fees I owe over $6600 . First off, I know Peter Merani and their lawyers and staff well. I have known them for over 20 years when I defended collection actions against insurance companies and they were representing the plaintiffs. They are not goons they are a professional law firm representing a client and actually very easy to deal with. They are transparent and helpful, however they are not there to represent your interests but that of their client. This is why you should have your own attorney representing you. Any lawsuit or collection action is likely NOT over what you settled from outstanding tolls from between 2014-2019. They are likely notifying you of debt you owe subsequent to what you previously settled, or debt you owe to a different tolling agency than what you previously settled. Dealing with a tolling issue is a minutiae, attention to detail activity. You can't make gross statements that you already paid without knowing exactly the tolling authority and the dates, times, locations, and amounts of what the tolling authority, through their counsel or collection agent, is saying that you owe. Once you know EXACTLY what they are alleging you owe, you can produce proof of prior payment to resolve the issue. Should you decide to hire me to represent you, I will get spreadsheets showing the dates, times, locations, and amounts you owe. Whatever is still outstanding, I can get you either a reduction or a payment plan, or sometimes both a reduction and payment plan, depending on nuances too detailed to go into here. The Port Authority DOES have a payment plan, but you must escalate your matter directly to the Port Authority through an application process. Sound like it's from the Port Authority. Just because you don't have an EZ Pass does not mean you don't have to pay tolls. The toll plaza photographs your plate and mails you a bill. If you are saying you never drove in the Northeast then that's a problem that needs to be remediated. If you did accrue the toll just pay it. If you did not if you want to hire my office I can review the bill, confirm its origin, and consult you on who to contact and what you need to do to dispute it and report the error. You are wrong. What you did was call the phone number on the suspension notice, which is 718-313-9425, and they told you that the Port Authority does not offer payment plans. That is not true. That number DOES NOT go to the Port Authority or the DMV. That number is for the Customer Service Center, which is a 3rd party collection agency called Conduent. Conduent is a collection agency that all three NYS tolling authorities (MTA, NYS Thruway, and Port Authority) use to resolve the tolling arrearages when the toll payer is pending registration suspension. Each of those tolling authorities gives Conduent different authority to settle the matter. The Port Authority DOES NOT allow Conduent to execute on a payment plan. What I do for my clients is kick the issue directly up to the Port Authority and negotiate a payment plan settlement agreement directly with the Port Authority. Thus far this year, through June 5, 2023 I have represented about 20 clients and obtained for them a payment plan. My experience has been that once you default on a payment plan they don't allow you go on another one. If you cannot afford it and your vehicle is again suspended you can discharge the debt in bankruptcy and they DMV will have to lift the suspension once you declare bankruptcy. Hey! My husband has his registration suspended through mta he owed like 30,000. We made some payments it went to court the judge threw out his registration fine but we're stuck... They're now garnishing his wages. He can't drive the car we're paying on and still paying the insurance. We have no other vehicle. We live in Virginia the ez passes were 2 hours away in Fairfax County. We've been reading on it somewhat. The judge tossed a lot of them but it was at 4000, we've paid about half of it. But are we able to get the registration if he is paying on it? Bc they're taking out about 450 every 2 weeks. We're so so desperate. We have no other transportation. Hello I received a letter head notice from a law firm Peter Merani to pay my ez pass debt . He has informed my that his client ( the port authority of NY & NJ ) has agreed to settle a 6000.00 dollar debt for 2,000 dollars . Is this a reputable agency ? The original debt owed is 850.00 dollar and 4,200.00 dollars of fees . Since I am disabled I dont have a bank account and would need to use a money order using money that would be lent to me by a family member ,is that a safe way to pay if this firm is legit ? Any advice would be helpful .I am worried I will get scammed and still owe the money . I spoke to someone named Tony Forde and he confirmed the letter sent . Is it safe to have my mom pay it with her checking account ? Is it better to use a money order ?

Do you really think that Peter Merani, who makes money hand over fist doing it right, would "hee-hee / haa-haa" risk everything by stealing a mere $2,000.00? The problem is not Merani the problem is people who are unrepresented don't realize that the law firm representing a client is adversarial to you and your interests. The problem is not them it's you. You signed a stipulation of settlement that you did not understand, and still owe money. The settlement you signed was for a single tolling authority for an inventory of tolls from one date to another date. What you owe money for is tolls OUTSIDE OF the dates you settled for. It could be for that same tolling authority but different dates, or for a totally different tolling authority. Go back to the document you signed, go find a quite corner of your home, get a cup of coffee, and read the agreement you signed line-by-line and digest the agreement and understand what you settled. Then, find out what you still owe for. I guarantee they are not for one in the same of which you settled. And next time, hire a lawyer to represent you.

I read the agreement I signed and all is good but only for period from when it started and when it ended because I was a dope by ignoring it . The only way I was able to settle this was by going to the toll booths and ask how to pay it . I finally found how to pay it and got it paid . Thank you for this comment. When people call my office they get me - which is what people want to talk to the owner and principal, not an underling. The downside to that is that I take dozens of calls a day, in addition to practicing law. I simply don't have the time to start from the day someone installed their EZ Pass in their vehicle. I need to know a few key elements: (1) is your vehicle registration suspended, (2) if yes, by which tolling agency, and if no are they under threat of pending suspension and if so by which tolling agency. Pretty much 100% of the people that call me don't have these answers readily available, so then I have to do a brief interview to figure this information out. So as you can see, I don't want to waste my time with the preamble about how unfair it is, my X-husband did this, not me, and all the other bla-de-bla stuff people want to say. Once I get an idea as to what the nature of the problem is I then tell them my price to handle it, and ask if they can afford it, because again I don't want to spend time on the phone with someone who cannot move forward. Moreover, I also have services at lesser prices I can offer in which I am less involved. If they are in a position to afford a service, which most say they are, then I explain to them the nature of the service and generally what I can do for them. Often times, as this caller did, they want to run by me substantive, detailed questions about the particulars of there matter, and I am unwilling to get into that conversation before I am retained because every time I answer a question it leads to another question. Plus, if you retain me you probably don't need the information, because I am going to do it for you. Also, I do offer a detailed verbal consultation service for a relatively low fee, so if someone just has questions before they move forward, they can retain me for a verbal consultation. So the bottom line is that when you call my office, I need to know a few key elements, to wit: suspended or not, and if not are you pending suspension, and which tolling authority had you suspended. I need to know this because each tolling authority handles it differently. I will then tell you my prices for varying levels of service, and ask you if you can afford it. If you can, then we will have a brief conversation about the nature of the service and the likely outcome, and then I am going to ask you your name and e-mail address so that I can send you a retainer agreement. All of this takes less than 5 minutes.

You were sued by the Port Authority, whom Merani represents, and lost, and now they are enforcing their judgment. Merani's office has done nothing wrong, so you can sue them but won't win.
