Craig is a man child. He is coddled by his family and a bit immature. I don’t think being immature and living at home, equals being a baby boy. Jody while also young, he had major responsibilities with no plans of growing up. Jody was actively trying to keep his mother in a place, that she only has him and no other man in her life. We see Craig having one crazy day, where we see Jody’s whole lifestyle.

I think there were several reasons why Craig didn’t have money: He took the girl to the movies. He purchased the gun. He probably paid monthly “bills” to his parents. His job probably penalized his check for the boxes.

I used to work for UPS years ago; they didn't pay minimum wage, and they gave employees their employees full time benefits for part time work. They also wouldn't let him pick up his check early; if i remember correctly, fired employees got their checks mailed to them.

Craig didn’t steal the boxes. While he may be ok with others obtaining stolen goods, he was uncomfortable stealing for himself. When they were in the corner store, he could have stole cereal and milk (which the family was out of). The Friday trilogy documents Craig becoming a bit more comfortable with certain shady behaviors, while never becoming a full fledged violent criminal. In the start of the first Friday movie, we meet Craig at his most innocent. His biggest edge was recently buying a gun (what he spent his paycheck on), which is needed in an increasingly tough area. The Jones’ are a good family and Craig sees the need to protect his family, in a way his parents would not agree with. In Next Friday, Craig is breaking & entering, a heavy smoker and stealing for the Jokers, yet still running from Debo, instead of using the gun. He used take money to help his family out of a bad situation. Craig is an example of being a product of your environment, but with a moral center.

Great point about 'Red'. Never thought about it. I do believe 'Red' would have helped them out, if they had asked him. When Deebo tried to choke Craig in Smoke's backyard, that was a totally different scenario. I wouldn't say Craig is a 'Baby boy' on the same level as Jodi. Maybe halfway. He of course had a job, and probably did contribute to the household in some ways. Different from Jodi.

I think in a situation like that all three were clearly in the wrong. Smokey was the most wrong as he knew Big Work was a dangerous person, so shouldn't even put Craig into the situation. Big Work should have taken all his ills on Smokey. That said he was an opportunist. He knew that he would have had a better chance of getting his money back by putting the heat on both of them. Craig shouldn't have got himself in the situation.

I think it's perfectly fine to live at home until whatever age. The key is being a productive member of the household that is at least as mature as your age. This isn't about simply getting your own place and moving out. I. Most situations these days it makes a lot of sense to stay home, contribute as requested, and better prepare yourself to move out when ready. Craig wouldn't even take out the garbage though 😆

This movie came out in 1995. I don’t think they put Easter eggs in this movie to become this philosophical piece. I think the getting fired part was designed to be a reason why they’d be just chilling on a Friday. & I think they thought the stealing boxes part would be funny.

what makes you think that Easter eggs didn't exist at the time? Hitchcock and Scorcese have been using them in their works. I imagine most filmmakers who have a chance to produce multiple features do and have. The point is that the casual eye may miss them. The term is what's new, not the concept.

I was thinking of the irony of Craig getting fired for a case of racist mistaken identity with Ezel. While it's totally wrong, there's comedy in the protagonist being mistaken by a crackhead. Big Worm doesn't care about how he gets his money, justice doesn't matter, or could be blind, he holds everyone accountable regardless of the investment of offense. Adding additional complications to the storm of calamity is part of the rising climax at the end of the movie, the reason for the drive by shootings.

I think The influence of Hip Hop music & the Change of tides in California in general of that time is Why Craig had the gun, & why its included in the story as a whole.. issa convo piece to the influence of Gangster Rap & Racial tension on the youth & young adults in the lower to middle class areas of California.. Cali is a melting pot. But Black, Brown, & Asian folks of the population have history of racial tensions with each other, amongst gang shihh, the drug culture & Police Brutality & such.. So i think that's whats being implied by Craig buying the Gun.. especially since Ice Cube is of the Group NWA, which is super prominent to the discussion of Gangster Rap having a certain type of influence on Gangs, Drug Culture & Gun Violence..

Take this with a grain of salt if you want, but DJ Vlad had an interview with Faizon Love AS the character Big Worm. And he had interesting things to say. Among other things, he said that the reason he involved Craig as well is because he's known Craig since he was a kid and knew that he was the more responsible one. And involving Craig was the only way to get Smokey to move.
