That second tomcat that came in for that low pass, how it ducked and waggled underneath the tree line and then came roaring out just above the tree tops....good god that was a beautiful sight. What it must have been like to have been there filming that. That was LOW in such a large plane like the the tomcat and at high speed to boot. Jeeeez. This is such a beautiful friggin plane man. According to even the best pilots, it was a hand full to fly but I imagine pilots enjoyed the process of trying to tame this thing. The more you mastered it, the more things it'd do for you. Climbs and runs like a rocket ship and can still turn pretty damn well. Sure it bleeds a lot of speed when turning but those powerful engines gain all that speed back in no time. I love this bird.

I was a summer student out in Calverton (flight test center) in 1982ish. I was given the opportunity to witness a test firing of the Gatling gun attached to a brand new F14. The test was operated from a bunker with the F14 right outside with the landing gear configured in a kneeling position which I guess aimed the gun into a sandpit. I think I have that right. Anyway, when they fired it, it literally felt like someone was pounding on my chest with both fists - inside the bunker. Very awesome.

It was extremely maneuverable and athletic due to high lift/drag ratio as well as the variable swing wings/ low wing loading. It could out-maneuver, out-turn much smaller, lighter fighters. People who flew it, still obsess over it to this day and do seminars on it. That is why I called it Corvette. BTW, Corvette is a heavy car for a sports car (3650 lbs) LOL.

No. The Super Hornet has over double the missile load, 12 of which can be longer ranged and more accurate than the Phoenix. The SH radar is over 4 times the power of the Tomcat's radar. And the range is longer for the SH as well. The Tomcat was not a good fighter. It was an interceptor, not a fighter. It didn't maneuver well, it was maintenance intensive, and you're struck over a hollywood movie years ago.

@@justinmoe3171 For something of it's age and size- maybe, but the fact was that It was not a fighter. There's a reason it could only carry two sidewinders- it wasn't supposed to dogfight.
