It was great to be a Ripper on that cruise….the last deployment of my career. Had a blast! VF-11 would be my final Tomcat squadron (I was assigned to five of them over the course of 17 years). Thanks for sharing this video…great memories!

@@davidwagner4436I remember when that nosegear incident happened (during workops?). I wasn’t on deck at that moment. I do recall that every Tomcat in the fleet had to have nosegear NDI done ….

"You love a lot of things if you live around them, but there isn’t any woman, and there isn’t any horse, nor any before nor any after, that is as lovely as a great airplane, and men who love them are faithful to them even though they leave them for others. A man has only one virginity to lose in fighters, and if it is a lovely plane he loses it to, there his heart will ever be". - Ernest Hemingway August 1944

F-14 Tomcat really revolutionize the launch, instead of raising the front gear like the F-4 Phantom does and other carrier aircraft does, F-14 as if it was almost in prone prosition ready to pounce as it launch

I need a smoke after all that I shot my wad. Takes me back to the good days of real airplanes on the deck. We need them back on the deck no chinese or Russian planes can handle that plane. F 14 could track 24 targets at one time and fire on them long before They could see the planes. Badass planes.

Yep that radar with the Phoenix couldn't be touched! F35 is junk! The Super Hornet is decent. The f22 if they had built a Naval variant maybe yes!
@Leadblast2 жыл бұрын
Lmao. The tech we have now can't compare to '70s or '80s tech. Modern fighter aircraft are much more capable than the old workhorses. AIM-260 will have as much range as the old Phoenix, but less bulkier. The Super Hornets armed with 12x AIM-260s will finally be the "missile trucks" the USN envisioned so many years ago.

ABE3 assigned to the USS Kitty Hawk back in the "Scud cruise" days. To bear witness to a fully armed F-14 kneel, power, launch was an absolute thrill and an experience never to be had in the Navy again, sadly. The way she "sat" at the point of release was like watching a pit bull tear out of a three-point stance after prey. I still have those moments imbedded in my brain. Oh and then there was this...(I was there)...kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpnJhqJ_ecSmiNE I still have nightmares.

The boat launches were so slow and tedious... The good and the bad was we'd shoot ALL the birds off right before sundown. Cranials off, quick smoke in the shack, total silence on deck, The whole boat would come out for that perfect Atlantic sunset, then BOOM night quals!!! Beautiful peace shattered by pitch black danger. God I loved it allllllll

There is no way this was filmed in 2000. I was with VF-31 from 1992-1995. VF-11 was our sister squadron and we both flew the F-14D’s. The bird in video is an F-14A.

VF-11 transitioned to F-14B's and moved from Miramar to Oceana about 1997 just before I joined them.

Air tails is correct. I’m a Red Ripper from 96 till 2000. We lost the deltas and got the bravos. Hated moving from Miramar to oceana but worked out great. Did first cruise on the Vincent. Then the next on the Stennis. So to traceyrogers. Sorry that the navy didn’t run it by you ask your opinion after 1995

Bring back the Tomcats!!! Ya know, if someone said, ‘today, we are going to give you an F-18, all maintenance and fuel covered by the military, for the rest of your life, or, you can be on the deck, just to watch Tomcats shooting for a day’. Well, I ain’t stupid. I’m taking the Hornet, to Iran, and trading it for one of their Tomcats. I’ll probably have to keep it in Cuba but, hey…I have a Tomcat and you don’t. I’ll just park it somewhere and sit in it…

it sure looks cumbersome getting in and out of that cockpit with all that water survival gear on
@AirTales2 жыл бұрын
Yes, and depending on the water/air temperature, we would have to wear dry-suits under all that gear. That made it even worse!

The last of the Kick ass takes names later 2 pilots War winner. The front seater takes the stick and the back seater locks them up. Now? A solo with an AWAC chirping in his ear. I know the costs got too much but two level headed professional pilots can do some serious shit.

I don't know if it's because i'm born in 85 so when i was 10, Top Gun was my fave movie. I'M French, for me TOMCAT is the Summum of military aviation.F8, F4, A6, A7, F14 and Hornets are so powerful. I'm 38 now and i hate F-35 ugly. As for USAF, F 16, F15,F111, F117 and all SAC bombers were 😮peacemaker,.stratojet, Hustler , Valkyrie (sad it stay prototype) B-52, B1b and B2 were so cool. I know modern planes like f22 f35 and B21 are best Technically but the 4th generation os the best even for Russia : MIG 23, 29, Su 27 and all flankers 😮😮1960 to 2000 airplanes were the best ✈️⚡⚡💥💥✈️

Iove the tomcat it's my favorite plane but word is the designer of the hornet as well as the tomcat had a dream , you could ask his dad , he dreamt about this woman um she was standing in a black jean jacket think black pants and threw up a peace sign with her two fingers did a kissy face and said let's Collab I'm your future wife and blew him a kiss winked her eye turned around and walked away and did something else oh she looked bac with tears in her eyes running towards him and yelled crash and burn baby and smashed right into him and it became the inspiration for the design of the tilted rear upright wings of the f18 hornet and also his brother collabed on it too but yah just another story believe at your own risk!

Thanks dick cheney. The f-14 was replaced by the f/A18 super hornet and dump Grummans new super F-14 tomcat 21. Big mistake, the super tomcat was way faster, more powerful, was way more maneuverable, and more advanced electronics, but that's what you get for cutting corners in the military..
