F-150 Gas Tank Swap! 23 to 36 Gallon Tank Swap!

My memory card was corrupted and I lost about 1/2 of the videos I had recorded for this project, so if it seems abbreviated, I apologize.
Swapping from the 23-gal to the 36-gal gas tank in 2015+ F150s is very easy. In fact, its a direct bolt up swap.

Great video! I do want to point out something for those who have or wanted to attempt this. For towing/hauling, this decreases your payload by approximately 100 lbs. Just keep they in mind when/if you begin towing/hauling items.

I did this swap a few years ago. The 26 gallon original tank had me stopping all the time when towing. I never did the DTE update, Ford wanted $150 to do it and I just never saw it as worth it.

You can do it yourself with a $20 Bluetooth to OBD2 adapter and the Forscan app.

For anyone on the generic salvage search sites looking for a 36 gallon tank, I want to warn you that there is a typical problem with salvage yards coding 23 gallon tanks as 36 gallon tanks. You must insist that they go and measure the tank. The 36 gallon tank is 74" versus the 23 gallon that is 62". After searching for 12 months within 100 miles of my home I finally found a scrap yard about an hour and 15 minutes away that has a fuel tank and matching pump. It cost $158 for both. I also bought the heat shield directly from Ford for $60, but the scrap yard I just found said they're just going to keep it on the tank I'm picking up since they would never need to sell it. I'm wondering if I should attempt this myself and do the Forscan myself, or if I should try and tackle it all by myself

@@TruckStuff1 This has been horrible for a year. I ended up going to multiple salvage yards to find a 23 gallon tank labeled as a 36 gallon. Even this morning when I picked mine up, after I told them they needed to measure the tank and they reassured me they had, they had a damn 23 gallon tank waiting for me. As I was about to blow up the dude who actually works out in the yard said there was a 2015 he was pretty sure had the 36 gallon tank. He told me to go into town and grab a sandwich and come back. I came back and someone finally had a 36 gallon tank for me. I come home and then discover they mislabeled a 23 gallon pump for a 36 gallon..... I feel like I'm going to explode with frustration. I just want to get this done!

Wanted to provide an update on my swap. Everything went fairly smoothly with me and my brother doing the work; having 4 hands worked great, and I'd recommend finding someone to help. Since I have the 2.7L with the valve on one of the fuel lines, we opted to use the existijg fuel lines to avoid the CEL issue since the 36 gallon lines don't have this valve. Straps came off easy enough and we slowly dropped the front end of the tank and slowly uncapped the lines and harneses. A few of the harnesses on the pump are challenging to get off, but just be mindful of clips and buttons. I think every connector was different. Popping off the filler neck by the tank is a must. Once that is over the most challenging part will be reconnecting the filler neck. My brother physically got under the tank and held it up in place while I got the neck reconnected. I thought we were in the clear until I realized my forscan was registered to my old computer. After struggling to find an access key for about 45 minutes, I finally got the DTE fixed on the dash cluster

Are the fuel pumps interchangeable or do you need a new one for the larger tank? I assume it’s a deeper tank. I already have the 36 gallon but I’m asking for a poor bud who has the 23 and a thirsty 5.0. His is a 2019 though. Can’t imagine it’d be much different.

The tanks are the same depth, only length changes. You do need a new pump though as the pump and sending units are different for the different sizes

It's all quick release with your hands, but they are exposed to so much grime that they can be very difficult. No tools required though.

What happens if you do not update the software and you simply change the tank size? I'm assuming if this is not done, the only thing it would affect is your milage per gallon reading. Once the computer calculates the miles per gallon, the Distance to empty should be accurate (which is all I really care about). Or am I missing something?

My total cost was about $140 for the tank and pump. Only basic hand tools are needed (screw driver and mallet, 15mm socket, etc...), and an impact wrench helps with the strap bolts. On my website I have a full step by step guide. Treyspooner.wix.com/truckstuff

Great video. I'm doing this in a couple days. Too bad you lost some of that footage. Other video's of this job disconnect all the fuel and evap lines that are attached to the top of the tank. Your way seems much easier. The salvage yard where I got my tank, cut the submersible fuel line vent tube that attaches to the fuel pump inside the tank. I would swap the existing one, but their impossible pull off the barbed connectors. Found one on Amazon of all places. A 6 inch fuel line is holding up my job. Did you run into issue? Thanks

@uacmarine19 The corrugated tubing from Amazon worked perfectly. I'll try to put up the link. I ended up breaking the vent line connector at the fuel pump. That was really hard to find. Finally, I found one on eBay. Took weeks to get it. Lube those up and be careful.

@uacmarine19 I didn't jack the truck up or disconnect the drive shaft. Just remove filler hose and tank straps, lower it to the ground with cribbing, disconnecting along the way. Slide the old tank out and new one in. When I got it back together, the truck wouldn't start. The wiring plug to fuel pump wasn't snapped all the way in. Had to drop the tank again. WD-40 all that stuff is the best advice I can give. Good luck 👍

Measure the tank. The 23 gal is 5 feet, the 36 gal is 6 feet.

Yep, mine were very hard too. Try dropping the tank as much as possible without putting tension on the line. Remember that each fuel connector has two clips; a safety lock and the actual release. They aren't easy

@@TruckStuff1 all I see on the big one is a button on each side. No other clips or anything. You have to push them both in very firm, then I don't have enough hands. Mine is a 2017 so maybe slightly different.

What is the difference between the 23 gallon pump and the 36 gallon pump. If the only difference between the tanks is the length and the depth is the same, why do you need a different pump? Are the connections between the two pumps the same? Is there something else that needs changed or modified? If the pumps are different, what are the part numbers for each? Truck Stuff FYI for anyone trying to obtain a 36 gallon tank. The 26 is the exact same length. The 36 is taller in the fuel pump area. The 36 I got has the number 9L34-9010-dc. The DC is the part to look for, my 26 gallon as same part number except the end was CB.

Yes, the sending unit is in the fuel pump. You can *technically* just replace the sending unit. But the pump is a lot easier and not very expensive.

Because 90% of truck owners just use them as grocery getters anyway. If you're driving highway and get, say 24 MPG, you'll get 550 miles on a 23 gallon tank. That's pretty good. Of course, if you use it like an actual truck, town 7k lbs, you'll get like....10-12 MPG so only 230 miles on a tank or so.

Ford made 2 mistakes in my eyes. The pinto and tanks to small for trucks. Take my truck 92 f150 5.8L flareside only has 15 gallon on mine. Says 19 online but i have ran her empty and refilled top off at 15 gallons. I want a 23 minimum
