F-15E Strike Eagles Evacuate In Advance Of Hurricane Matthew

More than forty F-15E Strike Eagles from Seymour Johnson AFB, NC have been relocated to Barksdale AFB, LA to avoid any potential damage from Hurricane Matthew. The large force movement also included six KC-135R Stratotankers and over 200 Airmen. Filmed on October 6, 2016.

I live directly in line with runway 15 at Barksdale and get to see a lot of planes come in. Yesterday two Ospreys even came in. From C-5's to F-18's and have seen the E-4 numerous times. But when the F-15's came in, it was a cool sight to see. Four at a time wing tip to wing tip in a slant then they would break off one by one and land and then the next four and it seemed like it lasted for a good hour or longer. Awesome sound and a sight to see.

Zomadee I went to Embry-Riddle in Daytona, one year they didn't get their planes out of the area of a storm and lost nearly their entire fleet of planes..about 100.

This may be a dumb question, so hopefully one of our more informed air force types can answer it. In the description it says that in addition to more than 40 strike eagles, "The large force movement also included six KC-135R Stratotankers". Did that mean they were just moving the tankers to Louisiana to get out of the hurricane's path as well, because it does not seem like F15E's with two external fuel tanks, plus conformal tanks, plus normal fuel carried internally, would need to refuel just to go to Louisiana from North Carolina....that's only 1000 miles or so, and Strike Eagles in full ferry configuration have a nearly 3000 mile range. (i guess they would need a third fuel tank to be full ferry range) but if they only have two tanks externally, doesn't this suggest they have all the fuel they need to make the trip there? Also, isn't it a bit alarming to anyone that we don't have sufficiently hardened shelters at the Air Force Base to keep the Strike Eagles safe from severe weather at their own base? I see Seymour Johnson has about 56 or so of those arched concrete shelters for the strike eagles, but there are no doors or back walls on any of them. Would it have been so hard to put back walls and heavy doors on the shelters? I mean we spend $700 billion a year on defense, seems like we would want to. Just curious.

I'm not an AF guy but the KC-10s can haul freight and transport airmen and that's what they were used for during the evacuation. As well as just getting them out of the way of a Category 5 hurricane headed for landbreak on the Carolina coastline. Which is why they evacuated. This was a more dangerous threat to personnel and equipment than a run of the mill "severe storm". As it turned out, Carolina was largely spared from damaging winds but better safe than sorry - especially with a high concentration of military personnel and very expensive equipment and aircraft.

It appears from the videos that the KC-135s (as well as some KC-10Es) were used as personnel transport and cargo platforms during the evacuation. As well as just getting them out of the way of a Category 5 hurricane forecasted for landfall on the Carolina coast.

USCFlash none of the structures are hardened on the flight line, just sun shades. Also good thing they did evacuate, water was up waste high where they pack and covered part of the runway. Lots of water had to be pumped else where to get them back home and allow us to come back from deployment a week later
