F-16 from USAF Viper Demonstration Team does Emergency Landing at RIAT 2019 after Experiencing Issue with right Horizontal Stabilizer.
Following the damage, Maj. Garret “Toro” Schmitz spoke to the tower and stated that he thought his arrestor hook had ‘inadvertently’ lowered but, as the video in this post shows, the hook is still stowed.
The first display aircraft of the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) on Sunday Jul. 21, 2019 program was the USAF F-16 Viper Demonstration Team display which was short lived as only a few minutes into the display an emergency was called, the display ceased and Maj. Garret “Toro” Schmitz climbed higher to circle while assessing the issue.
Following the damage, Schmitz spoke to the tower and stated that he thought his arrestor hook had ‘inadvertently’ lowered but, as you can see from the footage, it is definitely still there and stowed (maybe the damage triggered a sensor to indicate that the hook is lowered).
The pilot then did an emergency landing with flight control issues.
The mishap could have been caused by delamination of the right horizontal stabilizer caused by pulling too many G’s.

Not sure how the F16 could pull too many Gs. The software flight envelope protection prevents against such a thing. More like structural fatigue over many flight hours and the airshow manouver was the final stressor. FLCS in F16 never allows an over G.

@@griffinp790 The software may not be perfect and may creep over G from time to time but not to a significant degree because engineers build in a margin of error. Structural fatigue due to G accumulates over many hours of G loading. That's G loading up to the software limit. The F16 DOES NOT significantly exceed that limit. I suggest you do some research. This isnt debatable, its information that's been in the public domain for decades.

@@nighthawk9915 I understand such an argument being made today, as have understood the similar argument for the past 8-9 yrs, but have and still do disagree. At least a hundred mature (FOC) Block IV F-35A were to have been operating by 2020 as part of the original recap and modernization plan. This bold estimate and confident expectation absolutely influenced the decision to stay the course and disregard any notion or political pressure to buy new buy F-16s as part of an 'unnecessary' stopgap measure. Yet, USAF today still has only IOC Block 3 F35A in operation and far fewer numbers at that than were originally estimated to be combat coded by now. The severe miscalculation has created a significantly threatening Tacair shortfall projected to only continue, indefinitely, staying the course. Sufficient capability and deterrence is questionable and will likely only grow more sketchy over the next 5-10 yrs, staying the course. Thankfully, USAF had the strategic wherewithal to finally concede and make the hard, but prudent decision to procure 80 or so F-15 EX units as part of an urgent emergency stopgap acquisition process. So that said, what I'm simply stating and supporting, is that while it's definitely very late in the Plan B option implementation game to be changing around the goal posts and decision making, USAF could very arguably augment stopgap F-15EX acquisition with yes, cost-effective, next-gen, new-build F-16V as part of an interim national defense recapitalization-emergency-mitigation solution for the AF. God speed .

The one thing flight sim games fail to simulate with this and many air frames is that you can break the jet.. but assaulting the limiters.. or mixing rudder inputs... I'm sure if this was pilot error...the pilot had a good chat with the CO about the mishap.. From the over rotation on the up in out the flight before (if this is the same tail number) to this... this may be indication something was wrong with that control surface..And this jet was having issues.. which may have caused that the over bank...in the first video and finally gave way on this flight... See this take off in this video... Im guessing the day before.kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4iTlp2tfrVgn8k You can see the over bank condition... so that stress was brutal...

Arrester hook? F-16s don’t have an arrester hook.

Matthew Miller Oh yes they do, and F15’s . Most if not all fighter airfields will have runway arrestor gear. There are videos around KZbin of F15’s having to use them at Lakenheath.

Listen to the pilot here: www.fighterpilotpodcast.com/episodes/062-f-16-viper-demo-team/ A flapping hook is what HE thought caused the damage!

The flight control system took care of it. Have seen far worse damage : F-16 landing safely after lightning strike where the RH stab ISA was welded stuck. Flight controls compensated so the pilot landed safely.

F-16 is a safe and tough aircraft. A Pakistani pilot while on a bombing run near Afghanistan suffered a malfunction as a bomb got stuck after release. His aircraft was in tatters as alot of systems failed and he couldn't land. His bravery and intelligence on that night saves him and his aircraft. U can search it on KZbin.
