I was an armourer in the RCAF from 1981-2016 and worked on CF-18's. The M61A1 20mm cannon is a wonderful piece of equipment to work on and load. Our aircraft have the M61 mounted on top of an AHS, (ammunition handling system). The AHS is a self contained unit that holds 570 rounds of ammo and there is no waste exiting the aircraft when the gun is fired, all of the shell casings stay in the AHS. Another great thing about it is that you download and upload the gun all at the same time, instead of downloading and then uploading. Also the gun package (gun and AHS), is changed all together in one piece no having to remove the muzzle clamp, center clamp, barrels one at a time etc.

The terror is that it sounds so machine-like. Completely devoid of pity or remorse. No “hello, goodbye”. Just 100 rounds of hot metal death in less than a second, spool it, gone.

You hear the bullets impact FIRST and the gun ripping them off SECOND.
@bartekpabian48693 жыл бұрын
@Elias Håkansson Bro the bullets from f16 are just travelling with 1100-1200 m/s (comparing to the sound's 330 m/s) so they have enough time to impact and the sound from impact also have enough time to came faster to the observer than the sound of shooting f16 because the impact place is much closer to observer than f16 itself. And the thing with doppler effect, yes it exist there but only in case of shooting f16 because the plane has its velocity so the sound source also has its velocity and then the doppler effect creates but the impact place doesn't move at all so there is no doppler efect.

Those are supersonic shock waves from the bullets, not the sound of impacts.

Had the privilege of going to an aerial cannon range back in the day; A-10s doing target practice. It was terrifying being on the ground during a strafing run, imagining you’re the target. They’re all pretty planes and what not, but being on the ground when the biznazz gets serious must be a nightmare
