F-35 LIGHTNING HOVERING AT RIAT 4-K

The RAF sent over an F-35 lightning B from RAF Marham to The Royal International Tattoo to give us a short hovering demonstration. Stunning to see and only wish they would fly the occasional airframe through the Mach Loop sometime.

I will never forget when I was working at a temporary job in DFW, I'm sitting there under the hood of a car when two of these things fly right over, and I mean maybe a 100' above the apartment complex I was at and land just on the other side of the fence. The one thing I will always remember is how absolutely deafening they were. This guy must be a fantastic pilot because the two I watched that day were nowhere near as steady. 🤷

I haven't seen these in hover mode in person, though I HEAR them while around the base (Lockheed is just down the road from us, so we see F35s quite often!). That single engine unit to my ears is still insanely loud even in regular flight mode, way more than even the F16 they used to train the 35 pilots on a few years ago. Very cool to finally get a good look at this, though next air show I'll be sure to check it off my list!

I live in Beaufort, SC where everyone comes to learn to fly and fix the F-35B (MCAS Beaufort). This is a British aircraft, they were here 3-4 years ago and were the first foreign nation to get qualified. It's a two year posting for both pilots and maintainers, so they bring their families with them. Interesting thing about the aircraft is that there are no two seaters, the first time you fly one you're going solo. All training is done on simulators.

I remember seeing the Harrier at the Dayton Air Show back in the late 80s, and it was THE LOUDEST thing I'd ever heard at any airshow. Is the hovering F35 just as bad in person?

Had one here in Fort Lauderdale. Yeah, it was noisy, but just flat out WEIRD that a jet airplane is tracking you like a Cobra helicopter. It then folds everything up and flies away like a bad ass F35. It’s just weird to see a “jet” hovering, watching you, and could just level every square inch around you in 5 seconds and be gone ……

I have always wondered, how much fuel and/or weapons the “B” has to compromise to accommodate that massive duct right through the airframe?

It sacrifices about 4,400lbs of internal fuel capacity, is limited to 7Gs instead of 9Gs, and has a max payload of 3,000lbs less than the Alpha. But in return it gets to do sci-fi stuff so worth it from a cool points perspective.

Wow talk about coolness..... I wonder how low the jet can hover off the ground without any issues of sucking in any foreign objects. Where is the air intake when in hover mode, same as the air intake in forward motion. Cool jet.....

Ah yes, The F-35 1.7 Trillion dollar boondoggle. F-35B can’t reach Basic Mission Capable Rates. Fully Mission Capable less than 20% of the time. F-35C had a FMC rate of less than 9%. Pratt & Whitney engine failure. Shortage of power modules. Lockheed Martin has the maintenance contract double the cost, backlog of repairs and can’t secure parts. F-35 can tolerate supersonic speeds for short bursts at high altitudes before sustaining lasting structural damage & less stealth capabilities. The jets stealth coating bubbles at high speeds with no plans to fix it. There’s so many design flaws being kept under wraps by the DoD & Pentagon all the while continuing to fleece the taxpayers for a plane that is well over 💯 million dollars a copy
