Back in the sixties and seventies when I was a kid the phantom was THE fighter. I love that beautiful ugly thing. It was so advanced and I still think that it is relevant today.

A fabulous plane, my favourite fighter of all time. They come from a time when the McDonnell Douglas, (and Boeing), was more interested in building great planes than being a Fortune 500 company. Thank you for keeping them going Türkiye and thank you Joluqa Malta for the post! Love the B&W shark mouth.

"The F-4 is proof that, given enough thrust, even a brick will fly"- The Great Santini. He neglected that that brick flies REALLY damned fast.

In 1973 I witnessed the raw power of the Phantom at an air show when the #1 Blue Angel (Commander Bently) upon landing after their air show blew a tire. The F-4 was unable to get airborne again so he kicked in the afterburner and the gear dug a trench between the runway and taxiway before he punched out. Crazy as it seems, we spectators were only 50 yards (47 meters) from the whole event. The pilot's actions and the power of the Phantom saved a lot of lives that day. AP posted a picture nationwide (no internet) of the pilot ground ejecting from the Phantom with minor injuries to his ankles. The plane passed under "Fat Albert" (C-130) tail and sandwiched into the bed of a Navy truck with minor damages! Some 30 days later after (I assume) replacing the engines from all the digested dirt, two brave pilots from Cherry Point USMC flew the F-4 back to Pensacola, Fld.

The Phantom was always a great aircraft. The days of spectators being able to get so close to moving aircraft are sadly long gone in most parts of the world.

I was stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB from 1984-89 , when the 4th TFW had 3 squadrons of F-4E's . The Mich Air Guard also had F-4 C's on alert status on base too . This would probably explain my hearing loss . LOL
