October 28 2018 - today is the 165th anniversary of the premiere of this work on evening of October 28th 1853 at a gathering at the Schumann household. They were celebrating the return of Joachim from his european tour. I can only imagine what an amazing night that house concert must have been. The Schumann's and Brahms were new friends, Brahms had just gone on a great tour earlier that year and spent the end of summer walking around the Rhineland for 5 weeks by himself. This sonata is an important document of collaborative musicianship and friendship. I like to think that each movement was an essay by each of the writers on the idea of being free but lonely.

Many thanks, you are perfectly right, "Free but Lonely" is "Frei Aber Einsam" in German-FAE, and each composer used each tonality

Though Brahm's movement is probably the most famous, it is always good to listen to the whole sonata!

Yes, fascinating to hear the whole work; and it hangs together better than a lot of Sonatas written by a single composer. Apparently it was Schumann's idea, as a surprise for Joachim, who sight-read it with Clara Schumann and reportedly knew at once which of his three friends had composed which movement(s). What one wouldn't give to have been there! Thanks for posting.

Exact, Joachim was the violinist of Clara Schumann, and also Director

Also, Schumann later wrote his own first movement and Scherzo, and published it as his own third sonata. I've heard people claim it's not as good, but I don't know it well enough :P

Brahms led the mood overwhelmingly, but Dietrich was also admirable.

It is indeed a curious story. Of course, it is true that the sonata was the work of three composers, including Schumann and Brahms. But since Brahms did not reuse his movement, Schumann either wrote a complete sonata starting from his own movement, or this movement was extracted from a sonata in progress, things are not very clear. But the truth is that Schumann brought actually his sonata to its end, so there are actually THREE violin sonatas by Schumann. Unfortunately, he could not send it to a printer before the crisis which led him to the Endenich asylum, where he died. After his death, Clara Schumann, Joachim and Brahms, considering quite conservative critera, decided not to publish some quite important scores such as the third violin sonata and a complete violin concerto. Manuscripts were kept I n private hands, and sometimes had a curious story. For instance, the Nazis got the manuscript of the violin Concerto, which was awfully “revised” by a Nazi violinist, and played as THE Romantic German concerto; opposed to the “Jewish” concerto by Mendelssohn. The story of the third sonata is less complex. After WW2, some musicologists got an access to the manuscripts and could publish an authentic version for both the Concerto and the sonata. The two works were enthusiastically played and recorded by contemporary virtuosos. You can find both on KZbin

Wonderful because my Ancestor Friedrich List (Reutlingen, Germany) was the best friend of Robert Schumann, and father of Elise and Emilie, better friends of Clara Schumann. They all knew and were friends of Joseph Joachim ! I have books (Reutlingen) if you need references ! MANY THANKS !
