Very nice description and example of this deadly but simple fly.

Good Morning Sir, I love your instructional videos. I am working on many of the patters that you have shown. A year or so back you had a video on a fly called Save my Day or something like that. I can't find it anymore do you have a link. Thanks

Super easy fly. Even though you don’t like puffs tim I find puffs super nice to use with the same results.

Awesome, simple fly, Tim. Could you please kindly provide a little bit more instruction on the specific orientation of the CDC wings? Are they laid flat on the top of the hook shank, or vertically so that the CDC is roughly parallel with the plane of the hook? Thank you!
@tightlinevideo3 жыл бұрын
It's a great question Andrew. Some tiers are very particular about how the CDC wings are oriented, I am not. Some say one right on top of the other. Others say side by side. I've also read someone who suggested tenting them like the wings on the naturals. CDC is slippery stuff to begin with and trying to secure two roughly round stems to a round hook shank in any kind of desired orientation is no easy feat to begin with, so I basically just gave up. I simply get the tips of both feathers aligned and let nature and thread torque do the rest. For me anyway, flies tied in this manner float and work just fine. I've even trimmed the wings shorter after tie-in to no ill effect. I know, sacrilege.

I might have but bad cdc but the tips of my feathers are not like long so I trim the tip out and I found that gets the same appearance

I can see this tpattern working as a mayfly emerger as well

Marjan Fratnik, the originator of this fly, had another pattern to imitate caddisflies. The recipe was almost the same, but the caddis version had two turns of hackle under the wing.

I've been tying flies for over 55 years. I just asked myself, "What kind of stupid fish would go after some feathers with a giant hook coming out of it's bottom?" ----- well, I guess they deserve to get hooked.

I tie these from 10-20. They all work, more so, leaning toward the smaller sizes.

So I have a question for commenters, I’m just getting into fly tying and my mom has an old sewing kit with all kinds of sewing thread in it, can I use it to tie instead of having to spend money on actual fly tying thread?
@gregb88243 жыл бұрын
Sewing thread will be weak. Purchase some white 12/0 nano silk. Strong&thin. Use a little super glue when starting thread on the hook as it is slippery. Use a marker to color thread when you whip finish. This thread is amazing!

Nicely done Tim. I'll tie a number of these for an upcoming fishing trip. Marc Petitjean has a nice demo of tying this fly using only thread with a bit of history. See: Interview Marc Petitjean, mai 2016 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHO6n6mupLajfdE Forward to time 25:26. He uses Campbell Khaki CDC ( I found it from TroutLine ). Marc noted: Stack feathers on top of one another aligned by their tips * One CDC feather for hook sizes 18-20 * Two CDC feathers for hook sizes 14-16 * Three CDC feathers for hook size 12
