Whoa! I totally remember you and your awesome artstyle. I was SnowyOwl on Flipnote Hatena. I still have several of your flips saved on my old DSi, like the Hatena Carol story. This was a really moving video - I too often wonder what friends from Flipnote are up to now. It was a truly special community and I don’t think there will be one quite like it again.

This might be dumb of me to say, but I think I saw one of your flipnotes, the DSi Safety Parody 2 one, on a digital horror channel called “The June Archives & Restoration Project.” It was a hidden video. By the way, this channel takes classic flipnotes & makes them into, as I said, digital horror.

@@CSGhostAnimation Yep, you did indeed draw me in “Hatena Carol”! I remember being so excited when I saw that, and very moved by your flipnote’s message of kindness and tolerance. I’m doing great, thanks for asking! These days I’m doing writing and set design for theater and escape rooms. I have Flipnote to thank as a major reason I’m in those fields - being on Hatena made me want to continue working with people who value creativity and art! I checked out a bunch of the other videos on your channel a few weeks back and had a blast watching them. It’s so cool to see people here in the comments section sharing fond memories and connecting with your story. Cheers!!

I watched flipnotes ALL DAY as a kid, I was 7 years old in 2009 and i didnt really know how to draw but i really wanted to (more importantly i didnt know how to learn to draw, i didnt have a phone or computer access). Stick fight animations blew me away, I was always so confused how others could make those animations with a DSI, the same thing I had. I would always save the stick fight animations and edit them to try and reverse engineer how they where made. Seeing this video for the first time really made me feel heard. I've missed the communities and animations and I have never felt that same type of home since. I find myself binging on nostalgic flipnote compilations from time to time. Its comforting knowing others feel the same. This is maybe my 5th time rewatching this (and your other videos too, theyre so good), and i dont see it being the last time either. This video is like a bedtime story that you can listen to over and over again. Take my thanks ⭐

i found this from a GMOD add-on called "FµCK NINTENDO!" along with a few others on Gmod's Front Page for workshop. as a Nintendo based smuck, all i wondered was "what did Nintendo do this time." but all i found was this. as it stands, i still remember Flipnote Hatena! i still have my brother's DSI that we used to go on it, altho.. we sadly had moved on, and i never really got to recognize an exact individual from there. (other then a few.) as for the trend of telling Nintendo to "Fµck Off," i have no clue where it came from or why. I'm just glad that Flipnote Hatena is still well remembered, and being thrown back to the side of Flipnote Hatena that i remember of community assembled notes made by multiple creators merging animations together, random trumpet animations, sometimes it was just art. is something that ill never really forget. and altho i know now, that if i dare try to go back and connect to Flipnote Hatena again that nothing will happen. and I'm okay with that. as the memory's we all made in Flipnote Hatena, and the people from there, are not gone. and still around just in another place. as for me, what do i know. i left Flipnote Hatena long before it even shut down. and my ranting always gets too long anyway. (oh! and on 4:15 there's a short clip of an animation you shared. i won't say i 100% remember it, but i can say it dose strike a memory from a animation very similar to one we saw when we did use Flipnote Hatena. but thats all i can say i know.)

Flipnote Studio is a art style you will recognize just by seeing it. @kekeflipnote was an animator i could tell used Flipnote Studio before i even saw what their name was. and altho a sadly cannot say i saw many (if any) of your animations. with the (at least few) people who Ive seen who have never actually got to see Flipnote Hatena, I'm just glad I'm barely old enough to say i was apart of it, even if only a little. also, as for your animation in this, its great! and very smooth! something that alone is better then anything me or my brother ever really did. and that smoothness alone should be good enough here.

I loved hatena and flipnotes as a kid. I had just worked up the courage to stop downloading and observing and try to actually start making my own flipnotes to post online, but as I went to figure out how to do that, was right around when they shut it down. It's still so nostalgic to see old flipnotes and seeing this style, and the fact that the community still holds it near and dear to their heart, even though the community is so fractured, really makes it something super special. What you said was 'so accurate' though. It was a community of creators, not a community of watchers, it was something super special and I'm sad it's gone now. I love your style so much and I'm gonna stick around. Anything that preserves and continues the legacy of flipnote hatena and continues to make continued that originally was there is something I want to stay and continue watching.

Huh, so FlipNote had an entire community around it? I only knew of it as that one free DS application with a neat style. Granted I was very much not familiar with the internet at that point. The only way I even got the software or DSi-ware as the shop called it (Gosh, the nostalgia is swelling up.) was through my older brother being the only one even slightly familiar with the internet and it's technology. We would always use the router at our grandparents' house as the one home was foxed to the wall so we couldn't read the code. We had no idea what were doing and felt amazing with just those three free wares we could get. Anyhow, guess I have a lot if catching up to do now. Thanks for the wake-up call. AAAAGHH! What an honor to have my art featured in this!!! Anyways, long time Hatena creator here. We spoke about this before. I have yet to go through my old Flipnotes saved on my DS and I'm procrastinating because I'm not ready to cry. Y'all know I sorta avoid this topic. There is so much nostalgia looking back on my old art, and I miss the community a lot. It truly felt like home. The lack of community I had post-hatena drove me nuts, and when I finally settled down into a new one, Vinesauce, I felt a lot better. But it goes to show that everything is so much more wholesome when we all have our own "homes". For a lot of us, Hatena was our first, and was the breeding grounds for our talent. Sometimes I come across amazing animators and then eventually learn that they used to be on Hatena as well. Figures. We all have our own Hatena-ish vibe, even if we attempt to shake it off. Nothing will completely resemble Hatena ever again, but that's okay. I am just lucky to have been apart of it (Even though I had issues with all the edgy teenage drama lol). Thank you Ghost. I'm always excited to see more of your content. I don't even know how you did the 3d stuff with the buildings and pie chart, and I'm scared to find out if you did that all by hand. I have seen this video on my recommendation for a while... Don't know why I never clicked on it.... But fuck, I'm so glad I did, this was such a great video and made me cry, I never had a Nintendo in my life, only started to be a Nintendo fan last year, buying myself so many consoles like switch, Wii, DSi 2ds 3ds, cuz fuck all their games are so good..., I saw flip note and I was super curious so I went to search on yt some animations, I knew I saw u before, ur animations were so fucking good back then and still are, I hope u can find more people... I have the same feeling but in a different way, it's about PlayStation Home, I had so many friends there and everyday we met there... Until in 2015 I stopped playing... Then I came back later in months and it was gone... Not even knowing that it was gonna shut down.. lost so many friends there..one day I hope I can find them back... So good luck ghost, you got this, love ur character too 💝

There's so much genuine passion in small art communities, but sadly that's swallowed up on social media. When I saw your style though it was obvious you'd been a flipnote hatena stick fighter animator. The "simple" figures are so effortlessly expressive, with Carter's music the ending got me all teary eyed and nostalgic for those "talking for 8 hours straight" wild human connections that happen in the most unexpected places.

I rewatch this every so often, it was the first video of yours i watched (followed by, like, all of them), the animation is genuinely so nice, AND you’re my kind of humor But most of all this is a comfort video, you made it to my elite favourites playlist, congrats I get a rush of flipnote nostalgia from the style of your animation, i didnt even know there was an online community, i was so little i thought the short demos in my gallery were made by my nintendo or living in it or something; but it was where i animated my first things ever, and if i had known about everyone else, it would’ve been my first home too So what im trying to say is thank you for making this, starting 5 years ago, and im so happy it reached so many people, creators and watchers alike :,)))

Dude, I felt this video so hard like you wouldn't believe. I'm one of the very few 'Homeless Hatenians' as you put it. One of the smaller ones, so uh, you likely have only seen me once ever. But just, considering I was going through so much shit around my last year of middle school, learning that Flipnote Hatena was due to shut down the very day I was guaranteed my Summer Break, the ONLY time I would have had to catch up on my animations and show what new ideas I had in store?? It fuckin broke me. It broke my heart. And I sat there for those few years hoping that 'Flipnote Gallery' would finally release and I would be able to climb back on that high horse for the greatness I had earned for all the damn hard work I put into my animations, after building off of my mistakes and learning my own style. And yet it never came at that time, and I could do nothing but settle for this 'Sudomemo' that was created in its place by someone who wasn't any better themselves as far as whatever darkness people found out about 'em. Dunno if the rumors were true but, personally I couldn't find much of a way to like them anyhow. And then Flipnote 3D was announced. You wouldn't believe how fuckin fast I scrambled onto that Nintendo website to get my free code for that shit. I was so damn excited to get to animating right away, to see what people would create, to make new friends and start sharing creations again! But yet again. Nintendo had put a block down and make online interaction unavailable. It was just another animation program. I mean hell, I don't mind a free animation program with all sorts of fancy new possibilities. It's just... when you make an updated version of a past program and you cut off any amount of contact you could've had with old creators, it just hurts y'know? I mean at least you could find your old flipnotes again which was cool if you wanted to redo any of them or die of cringe(y'know, for the little bit of time they had that function running. Can't do it now apparently.) tl;dr: I can almost never feel at home with just any animation program, no matter how hard I try. Because when the Original Flipnote Hatena was the best thing in town, it let me connect with the few people who I still talk to-to this very day, people who's shoulders I cried on during hard times and derped off with in the brighter times, and we're almost like brothers and sisters. Flipnote 3D is fun and all? But it's just not the same. Nothing else could ever be the same. Thank you for making this video, honestly. It honestly brought back a lot of nostalgia. Also, big congrats to you finding a long lost friend! And to you making this video for that long holy shit. Well wishes to you friend, and I hope you can find more of your creative friends.

As another Flipnote creator, I did not consent to calling out my feelings like this, LOL XD But this was definitely something that resonated with many, and for me, especially the ending, and I was extremely lucky to have made contact with a group of my friends again about a year after shutdown, all because they had posted on their deviant-art our role-play stories by reminiscing and googling my old Hatena name to see what would happen and it would've been the only time too, I had become resigned at that point, had it been before that post, I may have never found them again, and, those people I've met online are some of my closest friends, I wouldn't say my style, or animations were all that good, or just don't hold up as now, but it wasn't about that, it was the friends made along the way, the interactions, a *community* that was thriving, and the stories, and art they wanted to share, but at the end of the day, I'm happy to have managed to stay in contact with some of them after all this time, and had been part of the Hatena community, I'm still missing some friends, and I hope they're doing well. If any of you are also hoping to find them, good luck, this is Juan Link an old cringy Zelda/Kingdom Heart themed Hatenian that was a roleplay junkie. P.S. It really sucked about the 3DS thing, for that year, getting one was an aspiration I grew purely to reunite with my friends, but it would've been a dead end based on an empty promise.

I may not have engaged at all since I didn’t know how to aside from adding stars, but wow the nostalgia trip is super heavy. I thought flipnote would’ve been great on the WiiU as well but sadly they was a pipe dream. I made my own flipnotes so long ago…and yeah they aren’t great but I had fun. And I’m happy you had fun with the community you shared with so many fellow animators. In the future I hope that flipnote animations get the same love that Xbox 360 messages are getting now. Flipnote Hatena was such a massive part of my life eons ago and that era closing scattered everyone there to the winds, but every now and then I see videos and such from people who were there, and it reminds me that those times mattered- and those people are still around, and were just as impacted by and loved Flipnote as much as i was/did. I kind of wish we had something like that nowadays, it was such a unique occurrence because of the DSi- unique to it because it was a mass produced gaming tool that just happened to be good for doodling on, and that spawned such a creative community. I'm turning 28 this year, feels like Hatena was just five minutes of my life but man were those some good five minutes.

Well this isn’t exactly Nintendo’s fault. The DSi, and subsequently, Flipnote Hatena had been out for 11 years at the point when it shut down, and it was most likelly not profitable keeping it up for the 100 people still using it. While it did bring out a massive community of creators, it was surely declining fast, and Nintendo pulled the plug. Now Flipnote Gallery World was most likelly shut down due to the short lifespan of the 3DS, as well as the release of the widely successful Nintendo Switch a year before it shut down.

I'm literally crying right now. People usually say that "Internet friends aren't real friends" but... they don't understand the shit that happens when those friends are lost. The void that just crushes you. The hole in your core that just expands every time you think about a pleasant interaction you've had with them.

Back in high school, I became involved in the fan-art scene for the game Starbound. I was still new to art at that point, but the community was beyond supportive. I found myself in the middle of a group of artists and art-enthusiasts (i.e. forum members who didn't draw, but followed artists on the forum), all of whom were wonderful people. Chief among these was a very popular artist who constantly gave me advice and encouraged me to keep going with my art. Eventually she drifted away from the forums, as did many others of the forum members as Starbound lost popularity--these days, there are only a handful of active users, only a couple of whom were part of the Old Guard. It's been years since the forum's heyday, and every now and then I'll get sentimental thinking of all the good time's we had. I don't think I'll ever have another community quite like we had in those forums. But the story doesn't end there. Recently, I saw one of my posts got a like from the artist I used to be friends with. I immediately PMed her, and the two of us started messaging again. Turns out she's actually been in close touch with several other members of that old community--in fact, not only did they all end up sharing a house together at one point, she even went as far as to get married to one of them! The two of us are keeping in touch and sharing art again. I may never get the Starbound forums back, but it's good to know I haven't lost all the friends I made along the way.

A few years back, I had a group of friends from all across the Western Hemisphere. We all played together on Hypixel, and I hade friendships that would have lasted a life time.... but controlling parents got in the way, and they took away my pc. 6 months later I came back- but all except 2 were gone, out of the group if 20.... the one I had the strongest connection too, vanished, with out a trace.... And I really miss him... so, HannahTheBanana_ if your out there, hello! (I was also very dyslexic, and a slow typer... these guys helped me with that. I mean Hannah is the way I learned to spell Banana... xD) The reconnecting in the video made me cry..... My best friend, and honestly, my other half, and I really reconnected recently, and that made me very happy, Were trying to track down the rest of our group.

This video really perfectly captured how precious childhood friends are. The stuff you did when you were a kid always has the potential to bring you right back to an easier time in your life. Life happens, people drift apart, but speaking to an old friend is something just nothing at all can compare to.

I can't believe that I'm only remembering this now instead of six months ago, when I first watched this. So, back when I was five or six, my mother had bought me a Nintendo DSi for me. I was... quite ecstatic about it, actually. I loved that ol' thing like a firstborn child. I loved taking crappy pictures on it, and I loved playing the DS games on it. However, one day I was toodling around on the DS, bored out of my mind, when I saw Flipnote. For... some reason, I had never gone that far into the DS 'library' (if you will). I never really had the reason to. But, after seeing that orange frog, I decided 'why not?' and opened up the app. I remembered being blown away by the animations - though I never hopped onto the Internet to look at the stick figure animations (look, at that time I was living a sheltered life... I didn't know about the concept of Wi-Fi until I was about ten. Yes, you read that right.). However, I was still blown away by the usual animations that were pre-installed along with the app - you know, that one animation with a parade of animals with the last animal/human (I forgot) being squished by an elephant's foot. And then I found my mother's animations. They were quite short - maybe about five seconds each - but those few animations... I loved them. At that time, I didn't know that they were my mother's - I thought they were also pre-installed - and so... I just let it be. Fast forward to about 2017 - I was fooling around on my school laptop when I saw The Cliff 5 being recommended to me on KZbin. Being curious, I decided to click on it, and I was thrust back into the world of animation. Now, admittedly, it had been quite a few years ever since I last saw my mother's animations, so at that time, while it did ring something in my head, it didn't do anything more than that. However, I became really interested in the community - I even tried to animate stick figures a few times (to no avail - I have no animating talent unlike my mother lol). Fast forward again to six months ago, when I saw this video for the first time. That orange frog began to stir up something within me, but then again, I also had some really spicy Indian food and mistook it for 'mama-mia my stomach's about to explode'. Didn't look back on it further. However, I was now very knowledgeable about the stick figure community - Hyun's Dojo, Alan Becker, Zeruel82Mk2, and CS. I'm honestly ashamed that it took me SIX FRICKIN' MONTHS to finally put two and two together - that Flipnote was the name of that one app (probably should have figured it out the moment I set my eyes on that frog) and then, right after that, I remembered my mother's animations. Even though this is a completely different story... It still struck me as humorous that CS has a point - the Flipnote community is still here. They were displaced, but they never really left the fans. The community is still alive and kicking on all social platforms - Facebook, Reddit, KZbin - and I would dare say that a lot of relevant stick figure animators were at least indirectly influenced by the stick figure community on Flipnote Hatena. Rest in Peace, mom. Thanks to you, I met a community that I will never forget. You'll always live on in my heart. As for the DS... I unfortunately lost it in South Korea about a few years back. Biggest mistake of my life. But to anyone watching this and scoffing, just - please - know this. The Flipnote community was... something. It wasn't - isn't - something to look at with disdain just because some bad people decided to do some really messed up crap. It's to be looked at like how archaeologists look at previous civilizations. One last thing. Admittedly, since this was a very long time ago, all of my memories aren't fully there, of course. Some are lost to the noggin that is my brain, but some - SOME - little tidbits refuse to just let go. And those little tidbits are what made me who I am today.

@CSGhostAnimation4 жыл бұрын
Good guess, and I think that scene of freely open to interpretations. But I sorta was going towards this direction: Everyone on the site is like you. It's a collective of everyone liking animation because everyone tried animation. They value animation far more. When an animation is posted, its remembered for several months. People on KZbin like animation, but they've never tried it. They simply value animation. They view the animator as an individual. And because everyone is individualistic on YT, there's never anything special about an individual. I lurk thru a lot of my commenters- they don't really post animations. Their individuals, just like me and you. And more so, KZbin and their viewers tend to view their works as disposable. TL;DR. Community understands, Audience does not.
@marianoherranmarco34944 жыл бұрын
CS Ghost Animation I agree with you. I like how you perpetue KZbin like a big city, away from hometown. It’s hard to connect with an audience that can’t see the hard work behind or the value that has for the creator. I hope you keep growing.

Holy shit… you were one of the first ones… It’s only a few months ago that I found your channel. I thought the art style was familiar, but I assumed it was just some shitty computer software paint style. Watching this I realized that hit me like a shotgun blast to the chest. Things from the old ways like flipnote are… well they’re something that my vocabulary can really articulate. It was more like real interaction. When any modern social media platform talks about new features designed to “let people express themselves,” that indescribable ‘thing’ is what their trying to achieve. The problem is that nobody can do it anymore. Old message boards, video games like RuneScape, flipnote, they were like worlds within worlds. In the new ways, I can’t find something like that anywhere. There’s a million things people will try to blame, but it’s not simple enough for a human to explain. Moving through the internet in the new ways is like walking through a lonely wasteland, but its paradoxically populated by a few billion people. The phrase “self expression” has been reduced from something that people fought wars over to a buzzword used to drag people into lifeless digital wastelands. I couldn’t really remember what it was until I saw this. Now I’m sad, truly sad. I’m almost never upset, much less sad, but this causes true sadness and lament. I can’t explain what I’m really thinking with words, but I think anyone who knows what I’m talking about will.
