Like previous titles in the series, F1 2020 plays great on a controller and the default settings will be useful for most players.
There is potential to optimise those settings however, which is exactly what this controller guide is set up to do.
In this F1 2020 Controller Settings Guide we'll look at every option available to you in great detail, showing you what button layouts to try out, tricks for MFD shortcuts, steering calibration, throttle and brake settings, vibration, force feedback and more.
By the end of this tutorial you'll not only have some good controller settings, you'll fully understand how each setting impacts the way you drive the car, and can apply that knowledge to any racing game you like.
This guide was recorded on Xbox One X but also applies to controller users on PlayStation 4, Steam and Google Stadia, as well as those looking for good controller settings in F1 2019, F1 2018 and earlier titles.

my avatar does not move the wheel in the game in f1 2020 xbox one pad control. This randomly happened..cant get anything back from codemasters and no one seems to have this issue BUT GOOGLE has become useless for searching anything specific..Anyone know if this can be fixed without re downloading the. damn thing lol

So I went through the painstaking process of updates to the latest f1 2020 version which didn't fix the problem and began google searching again no luck then went back into assist and all that garbage and stumbled over the driver animation. which was off and an option Is never seen so donno why it turned off in 1st pls e..So now all is good...As I was about to put my phone away I saw your reply ..literally 2 minutes after I found the thing... ...Again I Appreciate it .Would have gotten me their had I not stumbled on it b4 ur message...

Some good tips there, thanks! The biggest help for me was setting the linearity, however, putting all of them on 50 proved too extreme for me. Maybe I got used to the sensitivity a bit ;) I found that putting the steering and throttle on 25% was perfect for me, as I don't mind the relative sensitivity. Put the brakes on 40%, as at low speed the brakes lock up very easily without ABS, so then the extra travel is perfect. All in all, it took some getting used to, but eventually I started eclipsing most of my lap times with half a second or more!

This is crazy. I literally found .380 seconds on a lap at Australia. My first time trying it. I could get on the throttle WAY sooner because my stick wasn’t “full locked” even with it just passed halfway. And my throttle wasn’t full at half either.

Just one small-big secret.... turn the “wheel steering” from 360’ angle to 270’ angle. It helps a lot on controller. But of course not everyone will like it. I find it much smoother with more control :)

On a controller I don't think it makes a difference at all. It's a wheel setting that somehow was available in the pad menu.

It’ll be hard to diagnose, only thing I can think of is that you’re turning full lock. Try turning just below full lock and see if the car grips better.

I have always played with a standard Xbox controller and am wondering if there is a way to avoid the "stair step" turning especially on longer fast corners. There are two types of way to steer on a controller: Tap-steering is where you nudge the stick in either direction, sometimes multiple times in a corner. Smooth steering is where you push the stick to the edge, but at an angle and then gently rotate it towards the left or right.

Is anyone having the same issue where you play the game and when you turn, all the vibration is gone, I reset my controller presets and even reinstalled the game but the vibration feature still keeps going. Its not a problem with my controller as I loaded up the older f1 games and the vibration is perfect.

Deadzone is still really confusing even though I have known what it is for very long time. In many games I can put it to 0 which is amazing considering I use this controller a lot and it has even dropped to floor few times (I know, dammit). But in some games I have to set it to 7 to stop it from drifting.

Yeah some games are more sensitive than others. 🤨 I think I have one controller with potential stick drift but normally I'm fine with 0 Deadzone.

Absolutely nice description of each sections of the controller. Thumps up indeed. I have one question though about Steering Linearity: Lets say i have a hard time to "Fine tune my" inputs on the L stick, and feeling that i do like hard inputs (less smooth with the steering). do i then need to put the Steering Linearity up or down to compensate for that ? I didnt really catch that in the video :) I am on PC though using a PS4 Controller. I have same issues as others i think. Sometimes en sharp/hairpin´ish corners i tend to oversteer and the car starts spinning around. Or other scenarioes is in more fast corners i tend to oversteer at some point. So dont know how to really fix this? I am on TC: Med , Automatic Gear I have tried settings like: Steering Linearity: 0 , 20, 40, 50, 60 (In the lower end of linearity i do feel its VERY responsive (i might not do it smooth enough though). I’d try Linearity up for finer movements. As for oversteer. At low speed your Differential is too high. At high speed your rear downforce is too low OR your Ride Height is too low and you’re bottoming out.

Some people say that you should press up on the analog stick and then let the stick glide across the arc at the top for more precise steering. So hold analog at 12 o'clock on straights and rotate to 1 or 2 o'clock for milder right turns, for example. What do you think of that?

That's a common tip for places like the Monaco hairpin 🙂 You might not need to push the stick all the way to 12, but maybe 10 or 2 and then roll it towards the sides.

I have big problems getting around hairpins, especially Monaco. Can I change the settings of my Controller to get better around those corners?

This isn't necessarily a controller issue but more a driving and tuning issue. Driving: Try a slower and wider approach into the corner. If you can, don't go full steering right away and only barely press the throttle to get you moving. Practice the Monaco Hairpin as this is the toughest. Tuning: Soften front Anti-Rollbar, lower Off-Throttle Differential

Very late but I’m having an issue where once I enter a race my custom setup is nullified and the default is automatically selected. Also when I go to change it to the custom one both the custom and default are selected and have to deselect the default multiple times am I the only one with this issue?

Add more oversteer 😄 Understeer usually happens from turning the steering wheel (stick) too much, but that's less of an issue on console as pads have built-in dampening in this game to mitigate that. In that case, you're likely entering a corner too quickly, or taking the wrong line and not accommodating for the car's turning circle.

Mentioned briefly in the video, my paddles are set to be "click left stick" and "click right stick". I map the MFD to the right, and my rearview to the left. That way I can look behind and access the MFD while steering, and not worry about taking attention off the road.

You've probably double-mapped buttons, give them a quick check.

Sounds like your controller as stick drift, upping the Deadzone might help. You’d need to check the wheel/controller manufacturer’s support documentation to suss that out.

Hey really good video but I have some trouble with input delay, I steer left for example and nearby half a second later it steers. Can someone please help me because I I can't enjoy the game like that

Delay could be multiple things. One is the refresh rate and input delay of your screen, another is a fault with the controller, lastly, your deadzone in-game should be at zero.

Does anybody know why i still get vibrations on my controller when hitting the curbs or driving heavily through a corner? even though i have vibration and force feedback deactivated?

🤨 That's an odd one. If it's all deactivated it might be either a funky controller or a bug.

My triggers don’t work properly because my controller is old. So I use X for acceleration and Square for braking. Does the linearity for throttle still stay at the recommended 50?

With digital inputs like the face buttons, the linearity and deadzone options do nothing I'm afraid. They're only for sticks and triggers.

I cannot turn at high with modifying steering linearity. I tried japan short and it had alot of high speed turns and it was awful. Anybody wanna share their perspective? Im still a rookie

Change camera being left out was odd, and the lack of available buttons is likely the reason. I just map it to L3, and it works fine.

I map Look Back to L3, and in most circumstances I never change the camera anyway 🙂

@@PJTierney To be fair, you are right about never changing the camera. It's really just there out of habit. Though, I do sometimes change from the cockpit cam to T-cam and back, so I like to have it there just in case.

It doesn't do anything on a pad, don't worry about it. I think it's because I had my wheel plugged in at the same time when recording.

Everything is fine, but I have one big problem, at Maroko gran prix one corner it's impossible to drive because driver don't want to put steering wheel max to the left even when I'm putting max left on controller. On keyboard it's working but I want to drive with controller for sure 😝

Commenting on one video is enough, since I can see all comments 😉 You should be able to take a pitstop at any time, even when the engineer doesn't tell you to. 5 lap races are a no-stop strategy, and you'd expect to do 1 stop on a 25% race.

DRS is only available at certain points in the track. ERS can’t be manually changed in a race (after recording this I set my ERS shortcuts to Differential instead), you manually change ERS with the Overtake button now.

Sorry I meant Fuel and ERS. Because when I'm in a race, it's stuck on Auto and I can't change the fuel either, Its switching it for me? F1 is so complicated this year!

Are you using the Casual Race Style by any chance? They're automated there. There are also Assists for Auto-Fuel and Auto-ERS, to turn those off.

First of all, great video man, keep this up for beginners. My question is when I push the throttle button "R2", it goes straightly to %100 not just like yours in the video, yours seems to increasing lineerly. For my scenario it is either %100 or %0. Is there a fix for that? Best regards.

I think I answered this elsewhere, but check Deadzone and Saturation. If they match mine and you still have that issue, it's a problem with the controller.

@@PJTierney The controller is not an official XBOX one. I just bought it 2 days ago so I guess it is not broken. Settings are the same too. I use R2 for accelerating and L2 for braking. As I mentioned above it is either %100 or %0 for both gas and brake :(

@@werquast If it's not official, check the Codemasters/game site to see if it's officially supported. That might be your issue.
