F1 2021 feels great on a controller, but for the true Formula 1 experience a wheel is the way to go.
Adjusting dozens of settings and sliders can be a daunting process, but cars will feel fantastic when you get them right.
If you need tips on how to set up your wheel, I can help with this guide.
In this wheel settings guide we'll be going over the various wheel options in F1 2021.
Wheel configuration is a very personal thing.
The ideal settings will be different for everybody who watches this, but in this guide I'll show you my setup, run you through the options, and tell you what they all do.
That way you'll understand what all of the Calibration and Force Feedback settings do, so that you can find what works best for you.
For reference, here is my rig. The in-game options should be the same for all wheels, however if you're using a Thrustmaster or Logitech wheel you may have to change different hardware settings.

In this tutorial I show you how to configure wheel settings for F1 2021 on Xbox Series X.
The F1 2021 wheel settings guide is near identical for PlayStation 4 , Xbox One and PlayStation 5.
On PC you have the ability to use all of the buttons on your wheel, which opens up a few more options for Control Scheme.
Calibration, Vibration and Force Feedback is identical on all platforms.
For technical issues with your wheel, please visit the Codemasters forums to report issues or check for fixes.

To get the best feeling though, we’ll need to tweak our settings, let’s get started. 🟢 The Fundamentals When it comes to setting up a wheel, one important thing to keep in mind, is that it’s very personal. Some players like a heavy wheel, some like a light wheel, some have a cheap wheel, and others have expensive ones. Therefore, it’s important to learn what each setting does, so you can find out what works best for you. Outside of the game however, you may have extra settings on your wheel rim. These are different for every brand, though a good starting point is to leave them all at default, and focus on your in-game settings. If a wheel maker has posted official settings, try those too. In the settings menu you’ll find various presets for the most popular racing wheels. If your wheel is listed, this is a great starting point. Check the button layout and see if it feels right, though you may want easier access to key functions. Now that we’ve gotten the easy stuff out of the way, let’s turn our steering into something great. 🟢 Getting things Just Right The most important settings to get right on a wheel are those related to steering. When you turn the wheel you should expect a certain response from the car, and if you don’t get that response you need to change things. In the Calibration menu, open the button test, and turn your wheel 180 degrees in either direction. If the steering reaches 100, just before you’ve turned the wheel this far, you’re in a good spot. Real-world F1 cars have about 360 degrees of steering, and if you’re just getting started I’d recommend matching this. If it hits 100 far too early, you’ll need to adjust the degrees of rotation on the wheel rim itself. For Fanatec wheels I find AUTO to be a good starting point, though your experience may vary. If it hits 100 only slightly too early, or not at all, increase the Saturation setting. This tells the game where the maximum wheel rotation should be, and scales things accordingly. In general, you’ll want your wheel to match the in-game one. Keeping the Steering Linearity at zero should achieve this, once you’ve set up the rotation. That being said, if you want finer control over smaller steering inputs, you can raise this. Don’t go too far though, as doing so will make it easy to over-rotate your wheel, making the car understeer. One more thing to check out is your Deadzone. I recommend keeping this at zero if you can, however, if your car likes to wander on the straights, then up this to 1 or 2. The car should only turn when you want it to. With that set up it’s, time to put the foot down and get those pedals right. Before that though, hit the Like Button if I’m helping, and share your settings in the comments, so that we can all try them out. 🟢 How to Drive Without Assists The key to driving without assists in F1 games comes in how we control the pedals. You need to have confidence in their performance, so let’s dial them in. Rest your feet on the pedals and open the button test. If the brake and throttle readouts are at zero then you’re good to go, however you‘ll need to up your Deadzone if you see any inputs. You don’t want to be dragging the brake while going down the straights, or slightly holding the throttle at the wrong time. Next, push each pedal down as hard as you normally do when going flat-out. They should reach 100, but if they don’t you’ll need to increase your Saturation setting. You’ll want the full range of input for that fine control, especially when you drive without assists. Next, we have the Linearity settings. Try to leave these at zero if you can, but if you need finer control over the lower end of input, you could increase it. I like to have the throttle on 50, so that I can feather it out of slow corners. I’m also using a Loadcell brake, which is easier to modulate than a standard one, so I leave that at zero. Now that we can trust the inputs we send to the game, we need to get the same level of communication from the game back to us. It’s time to believe in the force, and get good feedback. 🟢 How to Feel the Road Force-Feedback is a highly subjective topic, as everybody drives differently. I play a lot of DiRT Rally, and now like to have a light wheel I can throw into corners. Other drivers like a heavy wheel, so that they can really feel the car pushing against them. Your Strength setting manages the overall level of feedback you get from the wheel. This one is highly dependent on your hardware. Those using very powerful bases like the Simucube Ultimate, will have this set far lower than somebody on a CSL Elite, which has a fairly light motor. The On-Track Effects communicate the feeling of the road surface, including all those bumps and dips. There’s some rather sharp bumps on a few circuits, and setting this too high might come as a shock when you go over them. A good place to test this would be the exit of Monza’s final turn. Pay attention to the bump you might feel before you cross the start/finish line. If this is too intense, turn the setting down. When you drive an F1 car you’ll be looking far ahead into the apex or exit of a turn, and not necessarily down at your wheels. In order to feel the limit of the track, you need to get some feedback when you run over the Rumble Strips. Set it high enough to where you can feel this without shaking the wheel too much. Off-track effects are highly personal too. A little feedback is good so that the grass feels different to the road surface. This will help you find your limits. Wheel Damper adds weight to the wheel based on how the tyres are behaving, almost like resistance as you turn. Again, this is one to play about with, though I prefer a fairly light wheel myself. One setting I have found incredibly useful though is the Understeer Enhance. When the game thinks you’ve turned the steering wheel too much, the feedback will get light when you go past the edge of grip. When you get used to this you’ll soon be able to turn the right amount for every corner, and lower your laptimes. One more way to lower your laptime is to turn off some assists, starting with Traction Control. Subscribe to get started. Thanks for the video! Here's my tip: To make braking require less real foot and leg force/pressure turn the brake saturation setting higher. Doing this means full pressure is recognized even though the brake pedal is not pressed all the way down or doesn't require so much force. I did this so I don't actually have to mash the brake pedal at every turn on the Logitech G920. Helps a lot, I can actually race a 100% lap race now without my knee feeling like it's going to split in half.

Great video. Have you considered doing a tutorial on pit lane entry; how to do so without assist on and how to practice it? I like to race without assists and I feel I’m losing time on the pit entry, or I push too hard snd get a warning/penalty.

Should in game FFB strength match the FFB on the Fanatec wheel? I've got both the in game rotation and the rotation on the wheel set at 360 but the wheel on the car over rotates so much it's very distracting. The wheel on screen will go all the way over 180 degrees but I've barely moved it. **EDIT** I figured it out. Set my rotation on the wheel to AUTO and went to 5 on saturation now the wheel on screen matches my inputs plus the car handles better. But would still like your input on FFB in game vs. on the wheel.

Short answer: If you’re on a budget get the G29 (G920). It’s the cheapest wheel and pedal set with good force-feedback. Above that, you need to choose between Fanatec and Thrustmaster. Personally I would go with Fanatec thanks to their ecosystem and build quality.

Hi I use a converter to convert a g29 to a g920 on xbox. Now, I can play the game but for some reason it turns for me but without wheel moving. Really upset because I also don't have force feedback. I know it's mod for Assetto Corsa (and Competizione too) but I can't realize how did you achieve THIS into F1 2021? Could you share some info about it?

It's in the camera settings, if you look up my guide on those you'll see what I did 🙂 Essentially, there is a "Look to Apex" option that lets you change the driver's head angle based on the steering wheel rotation.

Hey man. You need to download Logitech Gaming Software. Once installed you will see your wheel there and from there's an arrow on the rim itself you click on it and yo ucan change the axis properties and set to what yo ulike. For me what works best is 290°. (I have a g29, so the ps4 version)

I've had to change my Fanatec settings this year, something feels different and I think it's the recommended Wheel Rotation (I now use either 1000 or AUTO instead of 360). Start from a clean slate in the FFB settings.

-F1 2021 / PS5- Fanatec dd1 Podium Wheel- Is anyone else having trouble with the top left and right paddles not registering? I tried updating with no success. Are there any tricks to enable these triggers?

I had this on my Formula v2 on Xbox (CSL Elite), not necessarily with F1, but every game. What worked for me was downgrading my Fanatec firmware (both base and wheel) to something from late 2019. If it works, then good. You may want to update the base firmware after that but I would advise against updating the wheel firmware if everything already works.

On Xbox they're not available for Fanatec wheels. As for the in-game rev display, each team displays rev lights slightly differently.

Some wheels may not be officially supported, you'll have to check Codemasters support to confirm. Everything from Fanatec, Logitech and Thrustmaster is good to go but other than that it's a coin toss.

Just played the F1 2021 trial and set my settings to the same as F1 2020 and omg 21 literally feels so different. The wheel constantly feels like it just wants to snap out from under me and I can’t place the car where I want because the wheel now feels horrible and every time you turn it a tiny amount the motor tries to put the wheel back to the centre. Sounds like the sensitivity/rotation setting on the wheel itself is too large, almost as if you're using 1080 degrees of rotation instead of 360.

Not sure what platform you're on, but if it's Xbox all wheels show up as generic "Steering Wheel" in the settings. As for PS/PC, may be a bug so check the Codemasters forum.

I have a Fanatec DD Pro and am playing on Xbox. My steering hits 100 with less than 45 degrees. Nothing in the game seems to fix this. Any ideas?

Change SEN to Auto and then fiddle about with the Wheel Rotation setting in-game to find the right balance. I had the same issue on Xbox with my CSL Elite. I have a DD Pro now but only tried it in Rally so far.

@@PJTierney Thanks! I'll give it a shot. I realized that when I test the rotation in the game settings menu I reach 100% saturation very quickly, but if I switch to a camera where I see the character model they actually turn in response to my inputs beyond that point. I was able to find something that felt ok but it would be nice if the next edition of F1 has settings specifically for the DD Pro given how many of them have probably been sold recently (due to the GT7 bundle).

Download the software from thrustmaster onto your computer/laptop and plug in the wheel and open the thrustmaster control panel and then go to properties and you should see all the settings 😁

So I have the regular Xbox one and I have the f1 2021 game, and when I go to Those specific settings, I don’t see the different wheels. All i see is a controller setting and a keyboard setting. Are wheels not compatible with the regular Xbox one?

Depends on your wheel but I think there's a bug with some brands. Check the Codemasters forums for details.

Check your Assists, sounds like Steering Assist is on.

G920 should be supported just fine. I would check out the Codemasters forums, search for the wheel and see if anyone else has had this issue.

@@PJTierney I checked like 20 youtubevideos and 40 forums and 5 hours later i realized i accidently disabled my driver lol XD But now it works well.

Try tweaking your deadzone. If it's above zero there'll be an empty spot in the middle.

excuse me, when I play with the steering wheel the game turns more than I do, in fact in the settings when the steering is at 100 in the game I turn a little with my steering wheel and even if I change the maximum rotation of the steering wheel it does not change, what can I do?

Have a look at the Codemasters forums and see if anyone else with your wheel is having the same issue. On Fanatec I use my 2020 settings + set the SEN to AUTO on Xbox (and 360 on PC).

If you're on Fanatec, decrease the FEI setting on the rim. It'll make the bumps less deadly.

Check your wheel/pedal calibration, it sounds like the deadzone on the wheel software is too high and not the game.
