to be honest i don't see a development team asking players to download cheats in order to help them, that makes 0 sense. however IF what he said is to be true then i would imagine he is not to say anything to anyone about it hence why he would try his best to ignore it and move on, imagine you had been playing a companies games for years and they asked you to work with them to help solve a big issue and they specifically told you "DO NOT TELL ANYONE ABOUT THIS", if you quickly leaked it on stream would you instantly tell everyone everything? more than likely you would wait and ask the development team and your team what the appropriate thing to do is, after so many people started to talk about it he was forced to make a statement to save face.

In Carreton's case I'm willing to believe him for now because his performance the last year is much more in the realm of possibility than Ronhaar's and he hasn't improved at a ridiculous rate since last year. The major problem i have with this is it's his main rig. It's the rig he uses to do all the racing with that it's on. Its also his streaming rig. If you were professionally testing you would be using a separate VM (virtual machine) to do so and you would never be streaming from it. His facial reaction indicates heavily he knew he got caught, he just closed the file explorer, put his hands up and covered his face. It's a full "oh crap" response and it's his first initial reaction. He doesn't just walk it off or explain it instantly, he didn't explain before in the stream he was using it for testing. Williams eSports team has cheated repeatedly in the last couple of months, I'm more in the belief that the drivers are being pushed to succeed at any cost. So far it's iRacing and F1. It's definitely looking like it's a big core part of their mentality. Win at all costs.

@@pogmaster4559 Ok, but it doesn't cover his reaction. It doesn't cover using his personal rig, it doesn't cover that the folder was open. It really doesn't help that Williams eSports reputation is in tatters. No matter how much damage control that is attempted now, you will never escape that clip and the suspicion of guilt. I don't know the guy, I don't know yourself. All I can see is a video and the historical evidence of cheating by Williams eSports. That's going to be the really big hurdle to overcome. I really hope he survives this. One (potential) non-cheating reason to have the file open recently would be to make sure the mod is disabled for the event he was running. If he actually wasn't cheating, then this could be the reason that the folder was used prior to the event, although I believe this still wouldn't excuse having these files downloaded on your main PC. However, if they are compiling data like he stated, it could simply be that he wanted to have as accurate of a comparison as possible between cheated and non-cheated lap times/recordings, therefore he used his competitive setup for consistency purposes. I don't really have a solid opinion on whether he is cheating or not, but there really isn't any explanation that would make everyone agree that he isn't. And, if he actually isn't cheating, he made the mistake of putting the files on his main streaming rig (even if that was the intention) when it should have been on a separate VM. People can make mistakes that make the situation look worse than it is, but they can also claim those mistakes as excuses to cover up more sinister activities. So in the end, without more information we likely won't know the extent of the use of these programs for him specifically.

As a software testing engineer I do not think any company would ask the most competitive players, specially those racing for esports championships, to test cheats as it could easily give them bad reputation on their gaming careers and possibly unfair knowledge of game vulnerabilities. On top of that, if it were the case, they would not ask him to test cheats using his personal PC but rather give him another PC only for this type of testing. On the other hand, if Alvaro is truly collaborating with Codemasters, an announcement should be made by them to clear up this situation. Sadly, the unlikeliness of Codemasters asking an esport player to test cheats and his reaction on his stream, does make him look like he is lying.

As a game dev I would never say to anyone to download cheats, when you download cheats your basically give alot of access to the cheat providers so, they can do a lot of damaging things to your pc. Also, why would they need esports drivers to use cheats it doesn't help detecting them at all, the only data you will get is that they can go faster. If I was going to try to detect cheats in a racing game I would log the inputs of the drivers and track conditions and then replay it and see if it outputs the same results. If that is too bad for performance make it so, it's only activated on esport races.

If Codies were investigating it I imagine it would be more about how the program itself works and interrogates the game rather than finding if it was being used or not. The F1 game itself doesn't officially support modding and it's why you have to install tools like EGO archiver to install skins and whatnot to do it. I agree though that I doubt it would be used for testing if cheats themselves were actually used. Because you could just fire up time trial, play around with the XML files a bit with the aforementioned EGO archiver and see how far you have to go before you can match the lap times. In ACC we have MoTeC telemetry, and most (higher e-sportsy) leagues can ask you to hand over the the MoTeC files. F1 game should implement more telemetry information, and a tool to validate if everything is OK. They must have a function, that defines when do you have a wheelspin. Something like "if grip*y < rotation_speed_of_a_wheel*x*Speed = wheelspin Yes." (I added x and y, because that function is more complicated.) Put this telemetry into an encrypted container; clients are sending this to the validation server; if something is fishy, you're marked for investigation.

Why wasnt there a pre statement made publicly that this is what hes doing. 2)why did he NOT mention the others drivers names. 3)during the stream it looked like a guilty "Oops i been caught face." He could of addressed it right then and there. And said Hey this is what Im doing and why. 4)why does other eSports drivers seemed puzzled by his statement. Why wouldn't Jarno who is struggling on this years game. Be one of them? But none of these things happened that I think could of helped him tremendously. Just my Humble thoughts.

Comment on points 2 and 3, assuming that truth is being spoken about doing the testing, Alvarro probably has an NDA in place which would prevent discussing doing it. The fact that the folder was shown on stream, and his reaction of "Oh Fudge" could be because it was shown, and that something would have to be said. Dealing with companies about making a statement that effectively breaks an NDA is a very difficult conversation to have
@mrstim96

Majority of your points(1-3) are to do with the agreement with EA/Codies which basically restricts the drivers to speak publicly on it. So his reaction may have been as in "Ah fuck this is not good" but in terms of him then having to go and break the No Disclosure Agreement which means the trust for him from game developers will go down hill for future. But yeah too many things are not adding up hence I do believe he could still use that excuse as a free pass to actually cheating

i wouldn't be surprised if the majority of the top esports drivers are cheating... its impossible to police 100 percent for the qualifying events but holding main events on the LAN would be the best solution to at least cement that the result of the race is legitimate, hopefully the risk of being exposed during the LAN event would stop cheaters from bothering to even qualify because if they cant get anywhere near their qualy times during a LAN event they would be shining a spotlight on themselves. The real problem is codies dont give a crap about Esports, the only thing they care about is sales, there is no real passion for the sporting side of the game, why invest the profits into fixing anything when they are only 12 months away from a new game and all this gets forgotten about. Their priority has always been to appeal to casual console players, thats where the main bulk of the money is for this franchise and to be quite honest even as a pc only player myself i do think they should just hold competitions on the consoles alone, anybody who is legit in the fight to win on talent alone will go get a console if they dont already have one, anybody who actively cheats will just have to cry into their pillow at night that they cant compete anymore as they will find an excuse not to get the console. The only limitation on consoles is wheel support ofcourse so it may restrict genuine players on that aspect alone if they use a simucube or something but again, if you are in it to win thousands of dollars it may just be worth the investment into a console compatible wheel.

From Codemasters perspective the only way to truly test cheats in the esports level is to have esports drivers use it unfortunately. Anybody at a level even just below an esports driver would have to turn up the cheats a little bit to make up the esports time and then it's not accurate. There is no excuses for F1 Pros have it installed in their main PCs. If you are and old sim-racer like me and raced offline leagues (I read someone calling ancient racing leagues - yes I'm that old) in the end of the 90's / early 00's you are aware of that as many of the old LFRS stars are working for Codie since early days of the F1 series.

Between his statement and what Jarno said about written approval from devs, it seems to me at least, like this was an investigation started by esports drivers/ interested parties that has yielded fruit and the furtherance of this investigation has then been approved by devs. Not EA/ codies as a body leading an investigation in which drivers competing in eSports series’ have been asked/ encouraged to install cheats.

I feel like the “cheating” comment always comes up and the reply from a lot of old school gaming vets is “take it to lan”. I’ve been watching your other videos. Well done for being so pro about this. Hence why I’m trying to stay the same. My reservations are my own. And I’m on the fence after all you’ve presented. My conversation starter question however is. If these racers are supposed to be the best of the best. High performance esports drivers. Who stream to a multitude of people daily. Why is it such a problem to race on lan? Yes you mentioned PSGL and I 100% get it. It’s not sanctioned so that’s fine. But come actual f1 esports time even if these races are all done and recorded over a period of time and maybe only 1-2 events are “live” the “everyone on the same playing field” aspect will have to come into play. And I don’t accept the out of my element response from drivers. You are paid to do this. It’s not like myself just getting up for a random league race. Part of that job is getting up for the event. It’s live. It’s all real. And in person.
