He should have won the 1982 title, though I'm glad Rosburg took it instead since he had grit. Anybody but pathetic Pironi was fine with me.

Indeed. Watson should have won. But something weird happened in the second half of 1982. The Mclarens suddenly stopped to be competitive. Only in the last race, Watson was capable of extracting the best of the car. It was obviously a street circuit. The ones where he used to excel. Also he was not a good qualifier but on the other hand an unbelievable overtaker. Probably the best ever.

@@joaom2057 Excellent point. As I never thought of it that way. All's I know is that it was either Detroit or Long Beach that 'The Old Men' - both Lauda & Watson started 20th & 22nd on the grid and finished 1-2. Which as a stateside Jones fan here, threw me off completely as I was expecting only Gilles Villeneuve to keep me entertained at the time - 1982, once Jones was out of the picture. Anyways, back on Watson .... - I'm glad that he managed the resurrection of Penske in Austria (after Donahue's death) - however brief that was - by winning an extraordinary victory on the the circuit that MD had perished on just a year earlier. - glad that he won the 1981 British GP against all odds of a turbo -favored circuit. - and of course, as you mentioned above, he was able to get the job done on such circuit like Detroit that apparently wasn't designed for a proper GP event. On any circuit, under any circumstances he did the best he could - and I always have admired him for that. God Bless John Watson. 🏁 Last of The Best from the bygone era.
