In this video I pull the original Ford 9 inch out and replace it with a Ford Explorer 8.8 rear end with disc brakes, 3.73, and limited slip. I also install a Backyard Customz (BYC) mini c-notch kit in the bumpside F100. I run into some trouble at the end with the offset of the wheels not clearing the bed.

Idk why everyone's freaking out about the 8.8 over the 9. Clearly there are benefits for having the 8.8. As for hacking up the frame he obviously wants the truck to sit lower and there's no way to do that without notching it so even if he didn't replace the 9 he'd still have to c notch his frame regardless. Sometimes 3" is enough sometimes you wanna slam it. Nice episode, can't wait to see the 4 link

Lance Hill I see. I mean hey I just research and pass on my information that I find. Everyone is entitled to their own choices. I’m going 2018 mustang IRS, but my point here was he finds more value out of the 8.8. Maybe it’s the wrong decision, but we’ll see. I just don’t think he deserves 100 people bitching at him when there is value for the 8.8. It just all depends on your preferences.

Lance Hill I’m putting an 8.8 in my f100 and doing the c notch as well and the explorer axle is 373 gears and 31 spline if you did your research u would have found that the 8.8 is as good or better for this truck than the 9 inch that came in it

Good job! I built a '72 prostreet back in the 80's. I narrowed my 9' ten inches and used a triangulated 4 link with coil overs. I didnt have to cut my frame and put a 31x16.5x15 mickey on 15x14 dragstar wheels. I had enough clearance between the tire/frame, tire/fender but did have to cut out my wheel well to the frame. Mine didnt sit in the weeds like yours did but I also didnt have much option at the time to lower the front. I only had 3" drop I-beams on the front. It sat nicely but still drove like a '72. Im sure yours will drive much better. Subscribed and enjoying the build.

Awesome job. I have a 70 F100 sitting in the garage that my wife gave me as a Christmas gift. I have started some body work on it and have sourced a new engine but I really need to get my butt in gear and get some work done to it. I wish I had access to a junk yard to purchase parts from. For some reason they have all crushed everything and closed up shop in my area. I just need to bite the bullet and make the 6 hour drive to the closest pick a part and make a weekend out of it.

After watching your videos I finally got my butt in gear (the warmer 40 degree weather helped also). I'm picking up a crown vic front end 7 hrs away next week and I found a rear end out of an explorer that will be delivered (the guy is going to bring the whole vehicle on his wrecker to my house so I can pull it) locally this weekend for $50.00. Engine should be ready for me to pickup in the next couple of weeks. Still looking for a C6 transmission. Thanks for posting your video's.

I don't get all the negative comments and replies. Don't chop up the truck? It's his truck and this is America last time I checked. I have chopped mine to pieces and put it back together and it is better than it ever was. As far as the 8.8 and CV swap, did that too and the truck could put out 600hp and never blow the rear, it can't get the traction it needs to hold that power. A CV swap is a no-brainer and the 8.8 fits perfectly with it. I also just did a C-Notch in mine. When it gets that low, the axle will hit the frame if it isn't notched and the suspension travel is needed for safe operation.

I am a subscriber because you are building the same truck that I built (even though I started before you I am not done with mine.) For the rear end, since the Explorer rear is so much more narrow than the CV front track, I went with spacers on the rear. I am also running 2016 Mustang GT 18s all around. BTW, you are doing a great job.

Love the truck!! I did a c notch on a full size truck and it developed a very annoying harmonic vibration to the rear end. It was super annoying and drove me crazy until I finally figured out what was causing it. It felt like a tire was out of balance but would happen at very low speeds. Learned that these c notch kits are not rigid enough. The prob is with the rear spring perch mounts being behind the notch it tends to flex just enough to feel it as you drive. Solution was a short loop to reinforce the frame but unfortunately it has to take up some space in the bed. Anyhow hopefully yours drives good without this problem and you can avoid the mysterious harmonic vibration 🙂

I've done the same thing with my 69 F100. I started with the leaf springs and ended up putting a AirSlamIt four link. Crown Vic on the front. I cut the tubs out of my bed since the floor needs to be redone anyways but you'll have clearance with wheel spacers. I think I bough 2.5" spacers. Not ideal for long term but they do the job until I get away from my mustang wheels so something like that may be a temporary solution for you for now.

Several months late, but for anyone else with the wheel space issue, could try a set of wheels from a Panther (crown vic/grandmarquis/towncar) made in 2002 or before. they have a different offset but the same bolt pattern. They made the axle wider in the 03 model to match the wider front end needed to fit the rack on 03+ models, and in turn made the wheels sit really deep to try to keep the same over all width wheel to wheel. TLDR pre 2003 model Panther wheels have like 2 inches more clearance.

The 8.8 is a decently strong axle not exactly 9" but can take decent abuse, I have yet to kill my 8.8 in my 90, I have upgraded to a LSD, aluminum cover with main cap supports and removed all the bearings and seals and replaced. They say you can weld the axle tubes to the center section to give it more strength, also that explorer 8.8 should be a 3.73 with disc brakes so a bit of an upgrade as well. I have no hate for the 8.8, when it comes time when my 410W blows up the 8.8 I have a 9" out of a 81 pickup. I think he'll be fine for cruising around and the odd peal out.

I admire the effort. However, I would think that the structural integrity of the chassis is severely compromised, even with the plates welded on. The welding itself creates stress concentrations, which are more likely to fail due to fatigue over time. Might work only if the frame is over-designed to begin with, and not used for carrying actual loads after the customisation.

@@underconstructiongarage yes mutiple gear ratios were available most v8s got 3.73 and v6 got 4.10 but some got 3.55 all were 31 spline in the explorer 91-94 had drums 95-01 had discs... Sport trac through 2005 would be 8.8 axles along with explorer sports axle tag will have 3L73 or 3.73 denoting gear ratio and an 8.8 will be nearby telling you its an 8.8 a simple google search can give you axle codes for rangers and explorers to tell you your axle ratio and whether or not its a locker.

@Moneypit330

Easiest way to get rear disk, choice of rear ratio, 5x4.5 bolt pattern. He spent $75. It will match the bolt pattern of the crown vic front swap. He will not even come close to the power handling capability of the 8.8 much less the 9in. So he isn't losing anything.
@MattsRageFitGarage
@MattsRageFitGarage 4 жыл бұрын
@@Moneypit330 Why do people put crown vic front ends in these things? I own a 99 grand marquis, crown vic with a different name. I also of course own an 86 F250 with twin I beam. The grand marquis drives nice, but the F250 drives every bit as good if not better, not sure why someone would want to swap a more expensive and complicated front suspension if it doesn't really drive much better. Must be for the lowering capability?

What made you decide to go with the 8.8 over the 9“? The brakes?
@330_garage3
@330_garage3 4 жыл бұрын
The cost. The 8.8 comes out of the junkyard with 3.73 gears, limited slip, disc brakes for $75 bucks. To set up a 9" like that would be close to 1000 dollars. Also I'm doing a crown vic front end... so now the bolt patterns will match

Not when it’s reinforced with 1/32” steel plating…. On both sides! I’m not an engineer, but I can’t see the notch kit effectively replacing the integrity of that quite large chunk of missing, structural steel frame.

Better gear ratio than what he had, made lowering the rear easier, not much weaker in strength when comparing stock equipment, and he also gained the ability to run a much cooler looking deep dish wheel. Though he obviously didn't consider that
