I agree with you for not cutting extra metal off. I feel you made extra work for yourself when you ground your weld down as you did. I would have hammer and dolly to flatten the centre of the weld . Yes grind the centre but only to touch the metal of the new patch . Now weld will be a lower valley and want a bit of filler. That could of been avoided. I like your tape method. There is less metal to weld in and less heat . To have less warp.

There are many different ways to go about doing it that was my way I chose on that particular panel but could’ve saved a lot of time of course
