I just do a drain and fill once yearly on my 04 Jaguar XJR. She is driven hard and makes about 415 lb ft torque right now, daily driven, lots of city driving.. just did a fluid-only-flush recently

I waited a little longer on my 2018 f150 , changed fluid and filter at 60k , my mechanic used the amsoil atf not the motorcraft ulv , i swear it shifts like new , im so glad i did, mechanic said the old fluid was somewhat dark

On RWD transmissions without a converter drain plug I loosen..but not remove, the valve body bolts until the converter charge passage is opened which at least allows a little over half the fluid in the converter to be drained. I also in some instances drill the converter and use a 1/8 inch pipe tap to allow a drain plug to be installed

Used the Mityvac fluid extractor, w line level clear tubing to drain my 2018 f150 at 15k. Used a stubby 19mm. Amsoil blue cap. Did it stone cold, measured it in the graduated cylinder. NEVER HAD TO DROP THE PAN. 5qts. every 6 months.

Yeah it's definitely tougher to do it laying on the ground he can totally be done it's just a project and it's messy with the fluid if there's any wind the fluid will spray everywhere and definitely something to think about before diving head first into the process😄😉

Time was when an old Ford C-4, Cruisomatic/FMX and C-6 would go over 50,000 miles even on the old jojoba-bean derived Type F fluid, even longer with pre 1972 sperm whale oil derived fluid. Now, since everyone seems to think that more than 4 ratios are necessary in automatic transmissions, and with sketchy electronic controls, synthetic fluid is preferred if not an absolute must. I give Amsoil credit for being the ONLY manufacturer (that I know of) who makes a synthetic type F for older transmissions. I have also heard of people using Type F in the Mercedes Benz transmission used in Challengers and Chargers for its coefficient of friction advantages in racing. I just did a transmission service on a 4R70w and was surprised to find that the Mercon V fluid out there was either conventional or merely synthetic blend.

Funny this video popped up I just changed transmission and transfer case fluid in my 2018 EcoBoost F-150 10-speed with Amsoil blue cap SS. I had a lazy 2nd gear shift. After putting amsoil in not even 40 miles later sloppy 2nd shift was cured!!! Also did my rear diff with amsoil and of course the motor always has Amsoil 5w30 in only thing i trust to protect the turbos!

Can you compare Amsoil ATF to Valvoline max life please. I use Amsoil since my rebuilt my Chevy 350 and that was 50k miles ago and she still looks brand new when you take off the valve covers.

What another great video Eben I’m about to do my transmission soon on a really old 36 year old car and I was wondering if I can use the engine trans flush from amsoil in the trans to really clean it out it has a fill port and a filter as well run it for 15 mins and clean it out and replace the fluid I would really like your opinion on the matter with using the flush because some say don’t and some say it’s okay and also it’s because I trust you thanks again!

Oh yeah you can do the engine flush and the transmission flush the transmission it's important to get all the old fluid out so there's a little bit more work involved as far as just doing an engine flush it's super easy it all comes out when you drain the oil

Running that trans fluid to 212° is getting real close to thermal breakdown. I try to keep my 4l60e below 180. Ideally 160°. I run Amsoil and would never let it get that hot.

was this a full flush, or just drain and change? i cannot find any place in vermont that does a full flush with a machine. If this was just a drain and change, i would assume mixint the amsoil ATF with whaetever fluid is left in the bell housing and what not is safe?

Correct the safest thing to do is a pan drop that's where you drop the pin change the filter clean the magnets changes usually about 33 to 66% of the fluid on the total fill of the trans just depends on the component and it is safe to mix the 100% synthetic with the OEM fluid☕️😊 I give a man a fishing pole & show him how to fish. Absolutely nothing if you have the appropriate Hardware I would do it correctly take the pan off put it in a vise and do it perfectly that's one option there may be a kit available to order that or there may be a replacement pan that can save you a lot of time so I would do a deep dive research first then if you can't find it then make it yourself😃☕️🇺🇸 I give a man a fishing pole & show him how to fish. Bought used at 118k miles. Trans never changed and added 6 quarts at 120k. Fluid was still a good color so that was nice to see. Going to continually add more fluid over time until we flush out all the old fluid.

I did my 21 at 30k miles and it looked pretty similar. Almost to 60k for another drain and new filter now. I will say thank god my 3.0 PSD doesn't have all that BS in the way to do a pan drop. I hear the coyote is the worst to do.

Wow that's amazing you would think the car would be the easiest one that's naturally aspirated. Yeah Ford product is definitely quirky however once I sold the Ford product and I sold the diesel trucks then I understood why Ford is so great The Way They Ride by far the best ride of any diesel truck amazing the quality of the trucks definitely change the way I look at them

My 2018 EcoBoost has trans temp displayed as numbers it's in the options I watch it all the time but ever since changing to Amsoil it went from running 195 to 200 degrees to 180. I recommend anyone that tows Switch all fluids to Amsoil I don't know what kind of voodoo they use but they're fluids run cooler especially the transmission

My Gm version had dark fluid at 30k as well. Filter was dark, I will be doing this every 30k, these transmission are great, but they run hotter and hotter as the fluid collects debris and degrades. I was one of the guys who read the manual and acknowledged the no service transmission on my previous generation with the 6l80, on that truck the fluid with 220k miles on it was the same dark color of my 10 speed with only 30k on it. Things change and for whatever reason the 10l80 or ford version in my opinion should be serviced with fluid and filter at 30k the 60k, I am curious to see if the wear material becomes less or if these are just dirty transmissions.

Most are about half depends on the component and transmission but usually you can change between 33 and 66% of the ATF fluid when you drop the pan just depends on the actual transmission

@@Syntheticoilprotection Understood and I would never fault any one for using this approach as it is the easier of way to change a filter and refresh the fluid with a partial changeout. That said, my personal choice would be to use more fluid, a lot more, and flush the entire trans using the trans pump pressure to drive a complete fluid change and then filter change out. It is way more in $$ as at the minimum, you are going to be changing out the converter fluid as well, dropping the pan, filter and then adding back a substantial amount of replacement fluid to what was dropped, ie, new fluid dropped.

You actually only changed about 1/3 of the transmission fluid. When you get such a drastic improvement like that, it means the fluid was in terrible condition. I would recommend changing it another 2 more times for a total of 3 to get most of the bad fluid out of the system. Either on subsequent oil changes or on every other following oil change. You do not need to replace the filter on those unless you want to, only the fluid. Expensive but necessary if you want the trans to live long.

Yeah the fluid was definitely a fair shape that's just the quality of the lubricant from the factory totally different level compared to 100% synthetic Amsoil I've seen many fluid changes on the channel where the oil is burnt has a much worse smell that is mainly the quality of the fluid from OEM.

I would get extra just in case if someone spills fluid or something like that if you lose a quart you won't be closed always get extra you can always use more on your next round a few years from now as long as you keep the bottle sealed the transmission fluid will still be good. If I remember correctly with both the transfer case and the transmission it's getting close to 10 quarts so if it was me I would just buy a case and save the money one case of quarts is what I would do. The old filters were merely screens on many transmissions except for Torqueflites which have used a modern dacron fabric filter since the early 1960s. Most times those screens wouldnt clog, unless the transmission was on its deathbed from shed friction materials.

@@Syntheticoilprotection If you tow...ALWAYS install the largest transmission fluid cooler you can get. I often use automotive air conditioning condensers for such a purpose. They used to have a chart at the will-call desk in the local Transtar parts facility that showed how much reduction in transmission life one would experience according to successively higher transmission fluid temperatures. Synthetic ATF helps in all applications, but there is NO substitute for keeping ATF cool.

Many transmissions made before 1966 had 2 pumps, one at each end. These vehicles could be push started as the rear driveshaft driven pump would provide enough pressure to engage the clutches and spin the converter/engine

Yeah definitely if you're doing all highway driving and no stop and go I agree you're just wasting your time but if you're doing all City driving that puts a lot of heat into the transmission when you have more gears it shifts more every time it shifts there's clutch material that ends up in the filter and once the filter gets full of that particles then it doesn't shift as smooth as it should and then it wears out the transmission quicker so it is just a nice thing to do it sooner for better driveability and lifespan also you'll see a small bump and fuel mileage by keeping everything shifting correctly because it'll shift a little earlier when the computer is registering the pressure correctly so it's a very small subtlety but over the long run definitely pays off that's why so soon also this is a newer type of transmission that is prone to having a lot of heat degradation and also sometimes these Transmissions can engine break where it drops the gear to hold the vehicle back and that puts a lot of heat in the transmission as well so there's a lot of exceptions to this trans and because of how thin the fluid is it also is more prone to thickening as it thickens it doesn't shift as quickly so definitely something to consider doing quite a bit earlier than normal and that's the big thing about this specific component most other vehicles you're fine doing 30 to 60,000 on this one definitely better off doing it sooner than later if you plan on keeping the vehicle for a long time which a long time is over 5 years in my opinion. That's a great question on these Transmissions the pan only holds about half or maybe a little bit less and that's the standard transmission service is you drop the pan clean the magnets put the new filter on if you wanted to you could always come back and do another drain and fill if you wanted you could possibly install a drain plug on the pan and that way you could get more out also if you have the right hook up lines you can drain it all out you would want to get a little bit more fluid than the system holds and then you have a team of people help feed it with fresh fluid as you drain it until it runs clear which we have a video on here on the channel - kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5iYhqamhc5gsLssi=Z_mg2T_8W7YP4FeB

You make a great point definitely the best to do the full flush if you have a team of people to help but the pan drop and changing half the fluid is a huge upgrade will extend the life of the transmission will improve the shifting performance and will improve the fuel mileage of the transmission so on most Vehicles it's not necessary to do a full flush just changing half is great and if you want to be extra due diligent you can always come back and do another transmission fluid change and 5,000 miles and that will really clean everything out and that's what I did on my personal car - kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppPLmXirfNibY6ssi=6-BHIE-ApJ1HFR6o

Just break line loose at radiator, run engine unti fluid is out of torque converter, you see it stop.. Then drop what's in pan. You can get about 9 qts. When your spending 20 or more per qt, at 50 percent change is not good value.

@@Syntheticoilprotection Sorry but that is not true. Amsoil says to use the exact same ATF in a 2016 F-150 with a 6 speed transmission as well as a 2017+ that uses a 10 speed transmission. In the 6 speed, Ford says to use Mercon LV fluid and to use Mercon ULV fluid in the 10 speed. This is just plain wrong and deceiving to people.

@bruceb1958 Amsoil has two different options they have the signature series multi-vehicle ATF that is the viscosity that is intended for the 50s vehicle to about early 2000s in the lookup guide will show for your specific year make and model as far as the newer viscosities is about 12% thinner and that is called the the fuel efficient ETF fluid that one is a bit thinner and optimized for a lot of the newer Transmissions you'll notice a faster shift smoother less vibration so it depends on the vehicle you have the year make and model and the specific component some of the same model year can have a different fluid depending on the transmission. You know what I love Ford trucks and I think the big thing is that's the kicker is the quality of the fluid and also the 10 speeds you got to realize that transmission is Shifting literally all the time every time you touch the gas and down shifts every time you let off the gas it up shifts so that transmission probably shifts twice as much as the average transmission LOL so that fluid is like a fluid with 55,000 City miles on it LOL

@mred3660 yeah also different vehicles can be a huge difference with the tune on the transmission there is a lot of slippage on some automatic transmissions in that adds a lot more buildup into the filter like on my car my car has tons of slippage which makes a super soft shift which is more luxurious but I think it does a lot more wear on the clutch packs

That's a great question I would guess somewhere in the neighborhood of $200 an hour for probably two and a half hours plus the fluids so you could be anywhere from 575 to 900. It would depend on the fluids you run the pan you choose if you get an aftermarket pan with magnets or a metal pan. Mercon ULV and the Amsoil LV have different viscosity. Look at the product data sheets. Not what the manufacture says on a bottle or their sales page. 10R80 transmission operation is very dependent on fluid viscosity. Put it in as these guys say and risk your warranty if something goes wrong. Also, yes that's a big filter because its suppose to last to the recommended change time in the owners manual. If that thing clogs then you have more problems that a fluid/filter change will fix. My 2018 f-150 runs just as good as this guy's does just by swapping out 6 quarts of ULV at every oil change (suck and fill). Keeps the fluid fresh. Opening that transmission may lead to a problem earlier on a 20,000 mile truck. Also if you have shifting problems on the 150 its usually the software. Also if you have sports mode, It takes all the guess work out of the computer.

Manufactures design the clearances and pressures engineered into their transmissions around the fluid they use for optimum reliability and performance. Using anything that isn’t factory fluid or at a minimum meets the equivalent (ULV) is not a good idea. Just like how engine oil viscosity for a vehicle is specified by a manufacturer around main bearing and rod bearing clearances at specified temps. You wouldn’t run an old 4.0 Chrysler on 0w20 in the summer in Arizona. Love amsoil but would not ever run it in this trans until it at the very minimum meets ULV spec. Especially if you are still under warranty. Easy way to end up on the hook for a 10k transmission replacement

Does anyone understand what a joke this is? All these comments about how good viewers think this is. For one, this fluid does NOT meet the Ford spec for ULV fluid. ULV is a thinner viscosity than LV fluid. It is NOT certified as a ULV fluid. So beware. Two…. A drain and fill only replaces less than HALF of the total fluid in that transmission. 10R80 is about a 13 qt capacity. Draining the pan only , will remove about 6 qts. So there is still about 7 qts of used fluid still in that trans. Use a fluid exchange machine like a BG service to completely exchange all the fluid.

Respectfully, wether it meets spec or not, in transmissions specifically, the OEM's design the internals around the fluid. Not the other way around. Any oil other than factory spec is asking for trouble. That is my professional opinion. I'm not a salesman. And I actually run amsoil in other applications, which is why I follow the page. @@Syntheticoilprotection While I will agree that Amsoil does have a fluid that meets the spec, The bottle you showed in this vehicle did not. And again, with transmissions I would not be doing this. Especially on something that has warranty and on a trans that is known to have issues.
