Good work man. Gauges look great. I wish they could still make mechanical injected diesels. Im not a fan of the new emission diesels. Too expensive and too many problems with common rail.
@caseymogensen25797 жыл бұрын
Nate Figueroa, Thanks for the compliment! I like the mechanicals as well but the common rail engines are real animals, to be honest if I had the choice between a mechanical 4bt and a common rail I'd probably had chosen the common rail cause their quieter and run much smoother along with have more power stock than the stock mechanical 4bt. Plus the tuning capabilities are endless being able to tune and reflash the ecm along with modifying the engine. I honestly wrench on these engines all day and the problems they may have are actually very minor, just like any other engine they all have their weak points. Yes the emissions stuff is a pain but you can always get it deleted or if you have a new truck then it's under warranty and you don't have to worry about it. I've seen big power come from both mechanicals, HEUI systems and the common rails and I'm a fan of all three whatever their issues may be, I'm not biased lol

What an awesome and clean build! I've been looking into getting a bigger truck with a diesel but this is an excellent second option! Biggest question I have is, how is the towability now? I load my truck to the max, and it does alright with the 5.4L but has issues with big hills, think this set up would be able to handle 7,500lbs?
@caseymogensen25797 жыл бұрын
Patrick Inglis, it's all up to how hard you want to push it and load it, the truck has endless amounts of torque for what I haul I'll be towing a large flatbed with some farm equipment on it here later this year. But to be honest if you're doing that kind of hauling daily you will want a larger truck. I don't believe this build would benefit you greatly.
@Inglismachining7 жыл бұрын
Moges Diesel I should have been more specific, I haul a 27ft travel trailer for camping during the summer months so not going to load it up daily. 7,500lbs is the max I would ever tow. I figured the engine is not the weak point but more the transmission. Mine is 3yrs old on the rebuild with a shift kit, HD torque converter and oversized trans cooler. Sounds like it's worth the money to spend 10-15k on my current truck than to spend 30k+ on a different truck. Again, what a great build job you did! I've told many people about your truck, I'm very envious.

How much power can the 4R70W take? I have a newly rebuilt 4R70W transmission coupled to a 4.3L diesel engine but I'm just not sure how much power that transmission can handle considering the fact that it's an automatic transmission. The engine is currently non-turbo and I was thinking of installing a turbo but I am hesitant because the added power might just break the 4R70W transmission.

J Wind, Thanks for the compliment. And to answer your question, yes, all of the oe safety equipment works as it should along with the option of using the key to turn off the passenger air bag. Alberto Gordillo, That one is kind of up to you. You're going to save a lot of money by just rebuilding the 5.4, to do a complete swap like this takes a lot of motivation and an open wallet, these types of projects can certainly be overwhelming at points. My 5.4 didn't blow I just decided one day that it's coming out and that I was going to do a complete restore and repower.

I wonder if i can get the manual to go in too, since i already have it. But if you dont mind me asking, how much did all of ic cost? Including the ending and labour and stuff.
@caseymogensen25797 жыл бұрын
Joe295398, Yeah it for sure can be done and in my opinion it's the best decision I made with the truck! The manual should fit just fine if you mount it in the same oe position when installing the engine just need a heavier clutch. Although I'm not 100% sure how much those M5R2 trans can handle assuming that's what you have. Total all in all that I have in the build is $20,000 that's everything from buying the engine to painting the truck. The task took me a year total. And labor cost wise was $0 because nothing was jobbed out, well besides the exhaust and the guys that built the trans, everything else was done by myself in my father's shop along with him doing the paint.
@MLGVorkScoper7 жыл бұрын
Okay cool. Yeah I'm not sure what the m5r2 can hold, ill have to do some research into that. if i find it isn't gonna hold up well with the diesel, i might get get the G56, which is what my dad has in his new cummins. Only thing I'm worried about is it not fitting exactly perfect, but I'm sure some mods can be done too help with that. I really wish i had a garage because i would opt to do it myself, but since i don't, i might have to have someone else do it. Which i take it is gonna raise the price considerably, but the money I'm gonna save in fuel, I'm gonna make it back pretty soon. If i ever do end up doing it ill defiantly be sending you a few emails lol

I have an 08 f-150 xl 4.2 longbed. Ive been considering about doing this as soon as my motor blows. My little for two is at 220,000 miles right now. It wasn't too bad to do right?
@caseymogensen25797 жыл бұрын
thatguy, no it wasn't too terrible and there's a company called auto world that makes motor mounts for these engines for your truck.

how are your vibrations? some guys complain about it other say it doesn't vibrate bad at all
@caseymogensen25796 жыл бұрын
kelly hanlon, there are vibrations, the most you'll notice is mirror shake and steering wheel shake but that's all. Otherwise anything else is tolerable and mildly noticable.

Congrats. Im going to attempt the build, 98 stepside 4x4. Just bolt n go? Manual 5 speed?
@caseymogensen25796 жыл бұрын
Joe Ski, that would work, just have to build engine mounts and possibly move the trans mount

What transmission are you running and did you have to use a adapter plate?
@caseymogensen25797 жыл бұрын
abe frohman, I run a 4r70w with a 4r100 gas adapter plate.

is that Cummins a lot heavier? and if so did you have to beef up the front suspension
@caseymogensen25795 жыл бұрын
J.A.E 1979, No the truck still has the IFS. The engine is only 200lbs heavier. Which would be like standing on the front of the truck with the v8 in it

super clean install .. I did not read all the posts ,but what kind of mileage are you getting?

what kind of front end work did you do suspension wise to hold the weight?
@caseymogensen25797 жыл бұрын
Travis Mackmer, I actually did nothing to the front suspension all I did to get it level was cranked the T bars a bit.
@nuclearthreat5456 жыл бұрын
hold the weight lmao there was a engine already there
@Impuritan16 жыл бұрын
nuclearthreat545 considering how much the 4BT weighs that's a valid question.

If it had been a 5.9 or 6.7 Cummins, you'd need to do some upgrades.
