In Germany we actually have rules for these rear fog lights: - You should only use them when there is fog. Not in rain vor snowfall - only use them when the sight distance is below 50 meters (about 55 yards) - if you have them activated (when you are allowed to) its prohibited to drive faster then 50 kilometers per hour (about 31mph) The front foglights shall be activated in fog, rain or snowfall :D These laws try to keep you from speeding in bad fog visuability and from activating them at night in mild rainfall... Im glad we have these rules, i mean on newer cars they are in LED and bright af at night. :)

Tha ks a lot! This was very helpfull as BMW Netherlands refused (yep, you read correctly, and my BMW admiration took a hit...) to tweak my signal/fog-lights of my original US-bought BMW, I was forced to DIY. Instructions were great and a new world of BMW coding opened up!

Hi btw, most of the control switches in the bmw’s are like the one you showed, where you have a blank button, the functionality already exists behind it, for production purposes. I did the same when I retrofitted my surround camera’s in my f32 and added the camera button where there weren’t any.

I just came from the dealership and they did an update to my car, which deleted my rear fog light (display still showed in the dash), my DLR rear lights and speed in the dash... Dude. You just help save me about £800! I’m moving fro Germany to England with a US spec 2018 X-5, where they are required regardless of US specs. The X5 switch did not have the same blanks inside and another part on the circuit board was gone. So just ordered a like new on on eBay from Munich. Plugged in, bought BimmerCode code and went to it. The X5 is a bit different as they have no rear unit in the menu, but it says lights under the correct tab. And on it the rear fogs are listed as nebelschlussl (nebelschlussleuchte), NSL, for the rears. Coded it and boom rear fogs for my move. I owe you a beer and a lap around Nürburgring. Thank you!

Thanks a lot! My GTS tail lights had rear fog lights that didnt work until i followed this video and did everything as mentioned, only thing was that I did the coding first while I waited for the Dremel kit that I ordered on amazon. This was a super clear and easy to follow video, thanks again!

The intention of these lights is not to see better behind you but to be seen better from behind by other drivers when the conditions are foggy or rainy. I remember accidentally turning them on in an Mercedes 190E in the late 80’s in Canada... so it used to be a North American option at some point in the past, but I’m not sure when they removed it.

They look bright! I've seen cars ahead of me on the freeways when its foggy and rainy. Once they turn them on you have better visibility of cars ahead of you. In my opinion this is a good function. I wouldn't want another car running into me. I even coded the flashing brake lights.

I have a 2019 Gran Coupe. The rear tail light style is slightly curvier. I successfully coded the rear fog lights however it uses my turn signals and so does the brake force lights. Is there a way to code both to use different lights? PS I was able to pop the button out without removing the vents or anything

I can the see the LED fog lights on the taillights of my F15 but they are disabled. Needless to say I have seen some Volvos and Land Rovers with the rear foglights on. Its confusing cuz u think they got their foot on the brake continuously

Thic F30 Just checked this video and I think this may because of the different requirement from different countries. It is interesting that in China, the rear fog light is required at least one side, but the front is not required which is opposite to the US. But in China, BMW just do not come with front fog light for most of the model (do not have the physical light) which makes it much more complex and expensive to get a front fog light...

If you have a chance, check for the F97 or G01 alternative to rear drls. I know some have stated the solution isn’t out, but I’ve been in expert mode and I swear I see files that could be it. I’ll let you know if I figure it out.

Im able to do it on mine... just move your switch to daytime running lights and you should be to turn your fog lights on. I coded mine so that they also stay on when i use my high beams.

Tony Garcia doesn’t work lol they will not turn on unless I have my low beams on I haven’t done any coding yet to my car i know on the e90 you could turn on the parking lights and turn on the fog lights

From UK. It is not subtle. They are made to cut through fog. Please do not use them in normal driving conditions. The are angled purposely at the person behind you. It is a massive annoyance for the person behind to the point of uncomfortable. That's the point. It is a fog light, not a running light or a standard illumination for night driving. There is a reason you get pulled over for improper use of fog lights here. To be fair I do use them to annoy tailgaters when I don't feel like blasting away in my 340i.. 😉
