Thanks a ton I have a Hyundai 2006 v6 3.3l and I looked everywhere in the OEM factory repair manual and they did not explain how to change the transmission oil filter which makes me feel like that manual was a waste of money. I greatly appreciate your details and the time you took making this video showing everything including torque specs. Big thanks.

Don't replace the filter unless you want to do a full rebuild. These filters a non-serviceable items, which means you need to crack open the transmission to replace it, and if you aren't experienced or knowledgeable with working with transmissions, it is likely it won't go smoothly. That is why you couldn't find the procedure anywhere.

Hello sir. Lots of good information on your page. I have the same transmission as that in the video. 04 galant 3.8. changed the fluid less than 5K miles later, it won't shift out of park. Its hard to manually shift it at the shaft, I had to use my pry bar. Shifts through gears just fine, no codes. Let me know what you think. Thank you.

Hello Matt First of all what an Amazing Video thanks for sharing it. I have an urgent issue with my W5F51 (the 5 speed variants of this transmission with AWD belhousing) transmission. I rebuilt the whole thing myself but now it has Two serious problems 1. it's Stuck at first gear, won't move into second even with tip Tronic mode! 2. It Jerks Violently when put in reverse, it doesn't jerk when putting into drive or 1st gear. Basically only first and reverse work. What can be a possible cause of this in your opinion?? Thanks heaps man

I have to replace that transmission,rather than trying to rebuild it, later on , when opened that sucker, to see why it was giving me all that trouble , I found a flat piece of metal, it was about 10 *10 mm and 2mm in thickness, moving with fluid . I have no idea ,where it came from , Do you have an idea, what such piece of metal, came from ????

This has been a great class. My car Hyundai sonata 2007, 2.0, starts off fine but after it get hot begins to whine and slip with some noise. One opinion says we overhaul/repair the gearbox and the other say I replace with an ex-japan gearbox. What is you take sir?

Hello Matt EXCELLENT videos. After watching your videos I finally got the guts to rebuild my own transmission, its f4a51-2 from a santa fe. It looks exactly like the one you did. A quick question Is it absolutely necessary to check spec as you go along? if so you show a page on the book with spec for f4a51 just under the frame could you tell me what they are please. The special tool plates you use can i make them if I have the spec. Thank you very much for your time..
@MattsMotorz8 жыл бұрын
+Aqeel Rana You absolutely need to make sure everything is within spec. This is of utmost importance in transmission rebuilding. I don't have the book in front of me, but I know you can find it for free online in PDF form. Just search "F4a51 rebuild manual pdf." You should not attempt to rebuild a transmission without the manual. Even the videos don't give you all the information you may need during the rebuild.

Hey Matt, On this video at around the 3:30 mark you are installing the underdrive clutch assembly prior to the oil pump. You have a note about it seating correctly. Man...that is a bugger to get it lined up correctly. Can you recall any tips or tricks you used to get that lined up with the clutch hub? Did hub go in first on the spline then the clutches or did you put the hub into the clutches then install on the spline as one unit? Either way seems very difficult unless I am missing something.

Excellent work, I would like to consult something, my A4F42 transmission has a fault that only occurs when the vehicle is cold, it hits at the moment of changing from second to third gear, but when it reaches normal working temperature, this blow is not present more, what could be happening with my trasmission, best regards

Final question...had no gears forward or reverse prior to tearing into this thing. No smoking gun found. No busted washers, no metal shavings, all clutches looking fine, oil pump looking normal. Only thing was a very dirty internal filter and it might not even have been seated correctly. Is there any way to check forward and reverse gear operation prior to installing and filling transmission fluid?
@MattsMotorz9 жыл бұрын
Bob Gerhart On many transmissions you can apply air pressure (low pressure! no more than 50 PSI) to the hydraulic circuit that controls each clutch assembly and test it for engagement. It is normally in the rebuild procedure. However I did not do this for the F4A42 so I cannot say directly that I know where to apply air pressure to or that it can even work on the F4A42. Many times when no gears are working the issue is in the pump assembly, as the pump delivers hydraulic pressure for the entire transmission. In this rebuild procedure, disassembly of the pump isn't included so it is possible the problem lies in there. You would know for sure if you took line pressure measurements before the rebuild :\ You could always just buy a new pump to get all your bases covered (I don't normally advocate replacing things with no evidence but there isn't much choice here!). I know I have seen them on Ebay. Let me know what happens!

OK...thanks again for the series. I did take the oil pump apart but all looks normal. Will install and give it a go.

Hey matt, i rebuilt my transmission and after it was jumping into all gears (stayed in reverse but slipped out of forward completely) so i then rebuilt it again and now it goes into no gear whatsoever.... any ideas? I tested all my solenoids and my oil pump already and they checked out fine. The reason i rebuilt it is because it was jumping hard into 2nd at low revs and also the tiptronic feature was no longer working.

Hi Matt great video i noticed that the transmission you rebuilt is similar to the one i have in my 2005 Kia Spectra lx..i was wondering if my transmission is F4A41...and i was wondering where the output shaft speed sensor is and also the speedo gear....Thanks...John from Canada
@MattsMotorz7 жыл бұрын
The website I like to go to to see what transmission is in what vehicle is wittrans.com. As for the output speed sensor, it is always near the output of the transmission, by the differential usually.

+Tee Wild Is the issue related to temperature at all? (Meaning, does it happen more or less when its warm or cold?) Does it happen frequently? All the time? Intermittently??
@teewild2908 жыл бұрын
+MattsMotorz it happens all the time. all others gears shift smoothly
@MattsMotorz8 жыл бұрын
At this point, you need to go into the manual and determine the components active for 3rd gear in relation to the other gears. This could help isolate the problem. I would also take some line pressure readings while driving and observe the pressure when the issue occurs.
@teewild2908 жыл бұрын
+MattsMotorz ok I do that and see how it works out where could I locate a pressure tool besides the part stores
@MattsMotorz8 жыл бұрын
Ebay or any other online store. Just type something along the lines of "transmission pressure gauge." I made a video showing how to measure line pressure and I think I say where I got mine (I can't remember at the moment).

Hi Matt.. just finished watching your videos for the second time. Great job!! I have a mitsubishi endeavor 2006 with some problems and the repair price where I live is sky high. I´m planning to do it myself. Just a couple of questions: My tranny doesn´t go into reverse, wheels in neutral not moving,, it doesn´t have D and I can only drive it in 2nd gear in manual mode (1st and 3rd gears act as if they were Park). Could it be a problem with clutch assembleys o could it be some more serious? I'd really appreciate your advice.
@MattsMotorz8 жыл бұрын
It is very difficult to diagnose these things without investing a LOT of time. Each transmission is different. I would need to study the fluid schematics to see where things would go wrong. So while I cannot devote that kind of time, you certainly can. You can obtain the fluid schematics in the factory service manual (which can be obtained on alldatadiy.com)

Also, thanks for watching!!

Hi. To change oil filter on F4A42 is quite a pain. My question is: for F4A42-2 is the same ? because i have F4A42-2 on my hyundai tucson. Thank you.
@MattsMotorz8 жыл бұрын
+Sorin Sorinus I believe it is the same. The oil filter is "non serviceable" meaning it you shouldn't ever need to change it. In order to do so you would need to remove th entire transmission and that is just not worth it.
@SorinSorinus8 жыл бұрын
+MattsMotorz Thank you very much Matt. Now i`m relaxed :)

Hey man quick question i have a 02 galant with the same tranny i rebuilt mine. First when i bought it , it had hesistation going into drive and reverse, and hard 3rd gear. Now that i rebuilt it everything response as it should, just having 3rd gear keep slamming into gear valve body is in good shape. Do you think i may have a weak spring in the overdrive accumulator? thanks
@MattsMotorz8 жыл бұрын
+Tee Wild Yeah it could be the accumulator. It is hard to accurately diagnose those though. Sometimes this happens if the shift valve for 3rd gear gets stuck. Did you remove the valves and polish the bores in the valvebody until all valves slide freely? Does it happen more often when the transmission is hot or cold? Is the fluid at the correct level? Could also be solenoid issues.
