Greeting friend, the range of the selenoids should be ?, when measuring these gave me 4.4 ohms, in this case you have to replace them or are within the range of operation?

Hello Matt, thanks for doing this video series. I was looking for videos on the F5A51 Transmission and thats how I came across your channel. Is this trans much different then the F5A51 Transmission, if you know?Thanks, Ken.

Hi Ken, I do not know to be honest. I would guess that it would be very very similar, but definitely have its own differences. These videos may still be useful for you, but even if they were the same, a rebuild should never be done without the factory service manual.

Hi Matt,, I came across your video. Very helpful. I'm working on an f4a42 too. I've got an f4a51 imported as spares, didn't find exact one from Dubai.. Was thinking if the valve body for Both models are the same as I might need to swap it. Any advice please? Is there any pdf I can follow? Thanks mate.

at around 9:34-9:40 I didn't see a spring in that valve. I have the same valve body and also didn't see a spring here. am I missing something or is everything ok? because every other valve seemed to have a spring but this one!
@MattsMotorz
@MattsMotorz 8 жыл бұрын
Not every valve needs a spring. It all depends on how the valve is designed and what it is meant to do. So yes, everything is fine lol.

+MattsMotorz whew! thanks because I went ahead and put it all back together already! holidays have me delayed on parts but your videos saved me some time! Especially since this is the first time I've been inside an automatic transmission lol. I'm working on an F4A51 that got hungry for the oem style wave spring. SHREDDED the pump! metal shards in everything. I tried replacing the wavy the first time with the tranny still in the car because of flaring shifts and ended up thrashing the pump when everything broke loose 2 days later. oh well. this time I did the flow upgrade for the 2-3 shift flare too so she should be gravy now!

When this happens it is imperative to clean EVERYTHING really well. You want to remove all traces of aluminum that has been flowing through the system from the damage. This is especially true for the valve body as many times the aluminum in the fluid acts as an abrasive and causes the valves in the bores to stick. Polishing the bores is a good idea so all valves move smoothly.

+MattsMotorz the valve body has been completely cleaned out valve by valve. as far as the rest of the tranny, the only thing I didn't take out was that large goofy threaded transfer gear on the main housing. I'm confident no wavy got in there though... it seemed to follow the low path into the filter and valve body once it dropped out of the gears. Let me know if I'm wrong about this, it's not too late to pull it off. I sprayed a couple cans of carb cleaner throughout though. I think the failure was pretty catastrophic and sudden, luckily, so there wasn't much time to cause damage to the valves. I saw some debris around one of the larger valves near the solenoid and some very minor surface scoring on the valve but all of them seemed to move freely once clean. I'm taking my chances it runs ok. I can always pull the valve body from under the hood. Happy Fourth man, I really appreciate the vids

Gary Barbour II Ah, I was under the impression you did a full rebuild. Yeah I think you should just put it back together and see if it is okay (I think it should be). You definitely at least want to put new fluid in it. I am glad my videos helped btw!

Where is a video that talks about a 96 Mitsubishi Transaxle in limp mode? What are common causes. Or, what is the most common cause? Wayanchors.
@MattsMotorz
@MattsMotorz 7 жыл бұрын
A very common cause is a bad speed sensor (assuming the transmission is new enough for that). Scan computer to see if there are any codes.
@wayanchorswayanchors7890

Not a new transaxle. 96 Mirage 1.8L. Not much literature on it. Sometimes I get Crankcase Sensor error. Also, difficult to start in warm weather. Otherwise, no other codes.
@MattsMotorz
@MattsMotorz 7 жыл бұрын
It looks like the transmission in that car is the F4A22, the predecessor to the one in the video. I don't know much about this model, but if you don't have any codes then it is very hard to provide good advice over the internet. Did you get a scanner that is able to read TRANSMISSION codes? The cheap ones wont do that. You may have to bring it in to a transmission shop.

Couple of small questions for ya; what symptoms would the transmission exhibit if you had opted not to sand the valve bores with fine grit paper and left the sticky valves? What do those valves do, and would a sticky one cause a solenoid code to throw? No matter how long I look at the hydraulic circuits, I just cant make any sense of them.
@MattsMotorz
@MattsMotorz 6 жыл бұрын
Sticky valves cause delayed shifting (most common). I do not think sticky valves would throw a solenoid code but you never know with transmissions. The computer may get confused if it energizes a solenoid and the transmission doesn't shift because a valve is stuck. You can energize them yourself and listen for a click to see if they work. Watch my video "How automatic transmissions work" if you haven't already to get a bit more information on the valve body and valves.

Thats true, hydraulic pressure > sticky valve resistance for sure. Well.... I have a lengthy inquiry to ask; so I apologize in advance!! But if you'd be so kind just to hear me out, I will pay you even, and just be eternally grateful, since you are easily the only person I can directly communicate and ask with the very specific expertise in our EXACT transmission; I just need the answers to some detailed questions, so that finally, perhaps, I can get my vehicle going again and figure out, exactly 1 year ago, while driving on the highway in overdrive, or I guess its just drive, did it just... out of the blue, randomly, with no warning, act like it was in "neutral", followed shortly after by thudding into fail-safe mode. I figured out back then that I could somewhat circumvent this by just driving around with shifttronic, albeit with 4th gear absent, and 2nd gear mostly absent. So, here goes... upon further inspection yesterday, I think I found the culprit of 'atleast' one symptom for sure, if not more, I just need you to help me with the diagnosis because despite reading the hydraulic schematics, and everything else about the trans internals over the past year, I just can't figure out what effect this problem would have. The problem i'm referring to is it turns out that the 3rd accumulator piston from the left (valve body removed, staring at front of vehicle) has a hole punched in that middle little embossed circle, the raised molded circle; now, I don't understand how this thing exactly functions, so I just need to know what symptoms would that cause exactly? Because ultimately, I need to find out 3 things. 1.) Why 4th gear would go either A.) Rev Rev Rev Rev Rev like it was trying to shift into gear, or rarely it would do B.) [just be in a neutral-like state] 2.) Why I didnt have second gear, except only rarely when I would downshift (with shifttronic) into it, and finally, 3.) The most recent problem of: Early, cool morning drove ~50 miles around Kansas city for errands, everything was fine, then when I tried to drive home, randomly, while on the highway 3rd would just slip until I got it to like 6 or 7K RPMs, then it would grab a little bit and I just kept revving it up and coasting all the way home, doing about 60mph, and I barely made it home at that. Again, I apologize for the long post, but these questions have really, really been eating at me for the last year, because I just want to really know the ~why~ behind the failure, and of course to get my vehicle running again.

When a gear goes like that, it usually means that the transmission is trying to engage the clutches / bands, but something is internally wrong and it is not able to, so the engine just free spins because there is no load on it because the gear isn't engaged. This usually throws a code. Is there a check engine light on? Your final problem (number 3) is indicative of pressure loss in the hydraulic circuit that controls that gear. The pump output of the transmission is directly related to the speed of the engine. If the gear was able to grab only when at very high RPM it means 1.) there isn't enough fluid to keep the circuit fully pressurized at normal pump speeds (aka, the fluid is low), this isn't likely the case in your situation; 2.) there is a leak somewhere in the hydraulic circuit, most likely on the lip seals somewhere in the 4th gear gear train. Many times the same clutch pack or band is used for multiple gears, so if the seals are going in a common clutch drum, all those gears will be problematic. That is all I can do without really digging into it and pulling out the service manual. I AM willing to do that if you provide payment as you suggest via paypal, because it really would be an investment of my time. I won't guarantee any enlightenments, but I can offer my knowledge.

Oh wow, I can't believe I forgot to mention the most important information in my spiel, the trouble codes! lol. I've had the same 2 codes throughout this whole ordea, always these 2, never anything differentl: P0755 and P0760. So a year ago, I figured I'd just replace the UD solenoid, 2nd brake solenoids, and the solenoid harness and it would be good as new, but after I did that there was no change. Its never thrown anything different but those 2, and later I tried tracing the circuit for a short, and never found any. Its worth noting that when I lost 3rd gear the other day like I mentioned, a peculiar change in the codes came up, instead of those 2, I now was showing P0755 and P0765. No idea where the 760 went, but now it was those 2, which was weird since I kept seeing the same 2 numbers for over a year.
