my buddy was an airframer for F/A 18s on a carrier and said whenever the pilots landed harder than within that e-bracket, they had to do a mandatory inspection of the landing system

Not sure why nobody has mentioned this. You landed on the area (white centerline arrows) before the displaced threshold, a big no no. That area is weaker than the runway itself and will take damage (in the real world) if you land on it. You can takeoff from that area though, it gives you extra room to get up to speed. Otherwise a good tutorial.

Maybe cause this is an old revision, but military thrust is designated by the small line across your control display throttle axis, you don't appear to be near that, which is confirmed that you aim for 95% thrust? 100% is military, once you go to burner, rpm stays at 100% but the fuel flow obviously increases a great deal. Also, the runway has touchdown markers on, perfect aim points, and flap settings is also important, half flap take off (never Auto), and there is no such thing as "neutral" flaps. Love ALL your videos, just this could do with a refresh, I guess you rushed it as it's not one of the core items to learn, but actually (and I speak from experience), it can all go wrong in this crazy beast, especially for new pilots joining the sim. Keep up the good work Cap...cheers

Nice landing, but it is a nice touch to flare a bit at the last moment. And again: You don't need to look anywhere for the trim - just hit the Take Off trim button (in front of the throttles - or bind it to a key).

Proper Navy/Figher Pilot lingo n00b here, so could anyone enlighten me on the topic of TO w/ Military power vs AFT? I mean, the gamer in me thinks "Why the hell WOULDN'T you use AFT, it's SO COOL".... but what would a properly educated fighter pilot say to that? Is it really just the (to me) obvious thing about possibly wanting to conserve fuel? Is it about noise limitations, though I can hardly imagine such a thing to exist on military airbases? Or are there some deeper issues at play that I just don't know about? And of course: super helpful videos, and even super interesting just to watch per sé, well done!

The afterburner on the hornet in particular seems to eat fuel, you get about 10 minutes of flight time on afterburner without fuel pods, and thus it is treated more like War Emergency Power on ww2 piston aircraft than most afterburners. They also put a ton of strain on the engines and cause rapid wear.

disregard- the fix for me in case anyone else runs into this with the X56 and quite possibly other HOTAS is that the HAT switch up/down is also set for mouse wheel up/down by default which was causing the pitch trim to not work

I fly one of these for a living. With that being said, the most impressive part is when it stops in the air. I know we have wonderful AoA capabilities, but this is off the chart. (referring to the pause, for those without any sense of humour). Also, every F18 landing is a controlled crash (you don't actually have a lot of room to fuck around on a flight deck, or you'll find out pretty soon) - so you really should land AFTER the threshold. You'll fuck up the airfield. And then the local lead controller will find you, and show you that the AMRAAM of consequences rarely comes with lube.

You flare on base runways because on a ship flight decks dose give where concert wont and cause landing gear damage and early wear and tear
@esf-1272
@esf-1272 5 жыл бұрын
Negative. Naval/Marine pilots flare basically for comfort as it's less jolting. The gear (specific the planing link - the thing that keeps the wheels pointing the correct direction) breaks less when planted into the deck vice squeaking it on the runway, but that doesn't mean that pilots won't do it. Being overweight is the only real reason to do it.
@Paroxsym-OX
@Paroxsym-OX 5 жыл бұрын
@@esf-1272 You should listen to/watch a video from C.W. Lemoine on the Hornet, I think it was his video on his Hornet FINI flight. Navy pilots, when operating from an air field, *will* flare the landing not just for comfort but also to reduce wear on the gear.

@@Paroxsym-OX I under stand but I was in an a6 sqadron at nas oceana and iwas told in a6 fam school that flaring on shore was to save wear on the gears concert doesn't give while of the boat the flight deck does give

@cedrictaylor08 5 жыл бұрын
@@esf-1272 yes that is one reason but as an a6 sqadron maintains crew and going to a6 fam school I was taught to save the gears plus marines only do carrier landing at flight school naval pilots land on Carrie's since the mishap on the Nimitz back in 78 I believe a ea6b flown by marines crashed on landing trying to get his quals marines were then on shore pilots after that
@esf-1272
@esf-1272 5 жыл бұрын
@@Paroxsym-OX He can say that all he wants, but that is what was causing our landing gear issues in the first place because the planing link was not straightening the wheels correctly as the gear was designed to be slammed on the deck. I'm not saying I haven't flared and usually do, but it's not because the gear can't handle it nor that it actually shouldn't be planted on the deck.

Played Ace Combat 3; learned how to land gently. My tip’s to stay low, speed, flaps, & gear down, and as you approach the runway reduce speed the closer you are to the ground until the aircraft nearly stalls. By then, you’ll be a few feet off the ground, which’ll get you a gentle landing.
@Dinnye01
@Dinnye01 Жыл бұрын
You do NOT land gently with an F18. Actual captain and F18-er here. The gears of the Hornet are designed to take a rough hit, because on a carrier, you don't have the space to flare up. So basically you crash in a controlled manner and hope that you'll get the 3rd cable, which is ideal. And with that said, we only ever land any other way is when we have a passenger (some high ranking officer wanting to take a ride or sth). Every ground landing is an opportunity to practice the correct way. Also, there is a little indicator on the left side of the canopy, which will tell you the correct glide slope. If you put it spot on, you will have a traditional F18 landing. If you fuck it up, and have no excuse for doing so, you'll get an O for that landing and a boot up your arse.

Just for comparison: An airliner lands at a 3° angle and flares to about 100-200ft/mins. This guy lands at 8° and doesn'T flare, lands at about 800 ft/mins. 4-8 times the impact speed of a normal airliner flight.
@dcsaholic2636
@dcsaholic2636 3 жыл бұрын
F-18 carrier landings are at around 700 ft/min and are made to withstand very hard landings. You cannot compare an airliner made for commercial use landing on a stable runway and a high performance fighter jet landing on a carrier. Nice try though.
