My favorite method to do this is to set a waypoint at the runway threshold. In caucasus, kneeboard has the coordinates. With WP DSG you then get a nice marker for where the runway begins - line it up at the right course and 3 degrees below the horizon, and you're on the glideslope. This works even without TACAN at the airfield, but it's easy to miss being blown off course by crosswind. "Works every time, fingers crossed" - Cap

Just another couple of tips here. Setting your altimeter to radar altimeter rather than barometric is not the best idea. The terrain between you and the runway can (and does) slope, sometimes very significantly, which can really mess with your glide path. A better technique is to note the airfield's elevation (as shown at 1:25) and add the altitude you want to be above that. In this case, the field is at 43 ft MSL, so at the start you would want to be at 3043. At the higher airports like Beslan which is at about 1670 feet, you'd have flown 4670. Also important to note is that improvised approaches like this don't in ANY way guarantee that you won't hit the terrain. For instance, if you tried this technique landing north in Khasab on the PG map, you'd have a close encounter of the granite kind. This is in contrast to actual published instrument approaches which have been checked to make sure you will be clear of terrain when you follow them.

I don’t think you should be using the radar altimeter on an approach like this - though I would appreciate feedback if I’m wrong. The rad/alt won’t accomodate the fact that the field may be elevated from the rest of the terrain around it, so you could hit a valley on your approach. As a real world example, this was one of the factors that contributed to the 2010 Smolensk air disaster that killed the Polish President in 2008. A lot of the tips in this video are very valuable though! I would just suggest using your barometric altimeter instead and, at the ten mile mark, using 3000 feet + (air field’s elevation ASL) to begin your descent.

Find the airport you’ll be landing at and locate the closest line of magnetic variation. If the variation is East you subtract from your true heading and if it is Westerly variation you will add. For example if the runway was on a heading of 194 with a magnetic variation of 8 degrees east In the region your magnetic heading will be 186. Magnetic variation changes from time to time as the earths molten core shifts around but it should be accurate enough for what’s modeled in DCS.

@@kevykevTPA They didn't put it because it didn't need it. Also legacy Hornet is "only" $40 ;). It was supposed to operate from carriers, an aircraft deployed on a carrier will pretty much never be landing on an airfield, except outside of deployments. And yes, grim reaper tutorials aren't great by any means, I've seen them charge for teaching CASE I patterns that put you in a position of having to exceed 2000 ft/min to even hit the deck. Not ideal of course ;) Legacy Hornets fielded by Canada or Switzerland on the other hand were equipped with ILS compatible with land infrastructure as neither used their jets on carriers. Though, in DCS we tend to land our Hornets on airfields quite a lot, thought pretty much no servers or campaigns force us to do that in IMC but if needed we have several ways of checking whether our approach may be abruptly ended by a hill that suddenly appeared in front. Firstly the F10 map, but since that isn't always available we have our trustworthy HSI moving map. You can see the airfields there no problem. The plane also has a terrain database saved so where ever you designate with the A/G radar, HMD/HUD/TPOD/Whatever else, it will tell you the altitude of that point ASL. On the A/G radar it's easy to tell when there's a big terrain mass in front of you as there will be a "shadow" on the radar display. You can also set the scan up high so it only starts "seeing" and displaying terrain only when it gets within 1000 ish feet below you.

@@Destarn Thanks. I'm a noob at this, and one of the things I really have no idea how to use is the ground radar, but in a RL situation, an actually qualified pilot could probably use that and possibly other systems to perform IMC landings in ways I can't even imagine. But being a RL instrument rated private pilot (though sadly retired due to disability), my kneejerk response to this is basically what I said. HOW IN THE F CAN YOU FIELD A MODERN COMBAT JET THAT IS EFFECTIVELY GROUNDED IF IT"S LAND BASED AND THE WEATHER IS A LITTLE IFFY???????? Adding ILS capability to the plane is trivial both technically as well as financially. I can't imagine any of the civilians involved with approving the b1rd was a pilot, because had I been the CNO or SECDEF or anything like that, I would NEVER have let that oversight happen. Not that I'm ever going to be either of those things, just an observation. It's primarily carrier based, yes, but the keyword there is primarily. But since at least some IRL have it, 'twould be nice if ED would add it as an option, anyway. That said, I'm completely gobsmacked how amazing this sim, and this plane, actually are. Back in the day, I bought and used basically every combat flight sim ever made, including Falcon 4.0, but somehow I had no idea this even existed until a few months ago, and I didn't really start making any real effort until a few weeks ago. Simply put, it's what I've always wanted. As soon as the Viper goes on sale I'm grabbing that, and I'm hoping someone will pull a study level F35 out of their hat, too. Though that may be almost too easy, once you learn to fly it anyway. "You don't scare me, Russian SAMs, because you can't see me! Neener, neener."

@@grimreapers Magnetic variation varies by location. This is because magnetic north pole is not in the same place as true north. Aviation charts and approach charts show the local mag variation. To work out weather to subtract or add the variation remember "West is best" East is least" i.e. 5degW magnetic variation you add 5deg to true to get magnetic course and vice versa for east. Also not a great idea to use the radio altimeter for an approach as it only tells you your altitude above the ground directly below the aircraft, not above the airfield. So if you are flying over uneven terrain its goes all over the place. You should fly it on barometric alt using the QFE setting which will give you your height above the field. Or use QNH and the add the airport elevation to all your heights, i.e. if field elev is 300ft @ 10miles you should be 3000ft + 300ft = 3300ft, 5miles 1500ft + 300ft=1800ft etc. Also don't forget that the Tacan was is the middle of the field so you need to account for that when doing your distance height calculations

At one point, you even stopped, to take in a deep breath, after you blew through so much information in 20 seconds flat. Luckily Betty is from a generation which didn't know they had gender identities and that they should be offended if somebody assumed otherwise based on visual cues. I miss those days...

@Cole Lee Aerial runways are+-5 degree and they allready are map directions lol. just need fly -6degree,but why not write maps -6 when compass say so lol.. if day would be 1,002 faster year would be 365 day exactly we would not need leap year if day is 23,934 then why second minutes and hour not match so year would be correct lol.but hey if mile not actually mile. it is 0,998 LOL

You aren't supposed to flare the Hornet on landing..

For RL approach/landing procedures just check out the official NATOPS F-18 manuals here: info.publicintelligence.net/F18-ABCD-000.pdf You can find approach/landing procedures under part III normal procedures on page 333 of the PDF. publicintelligence.net/u-s-navy-f-18-natops-flight-manuals/

If you're over 34k total weight (plane+fuel+weapons) you SHALL flare, or else dump weight. The reason USN like the controlled crash even on runways is that it keeps the carrier landing skills fresh.

@Ean Bezemer - I don't think so but you're actually in a semi-flare attitude when landing anyway, if you're 'on speed'. Your Hornet should already be at an approximately 8° nose-high attitude. Add a touch of throttle once over the runway threshold to slow the descent rate and you'll make a nice soft landing, which nearly every terra firma bound pilot strives for. No reason to punish the airframe slamming it onto the runway with all that extra room and no arresting wires to worry about.

Jimbo in Thailand By pulling back on the stick before landing you can cause a stall and gear damage. Just follow NATOPS
