FA-50 Golden Eagle: Southeast Asia's Favorite Light Fighter

In Southeast Asia, the FA-50 Golden Eagle is considered a suitable light fighter, because of its low price and advanced features.
KAI T-50 or Golden Eagle developed by Korea Aerospace Industries in partnership with Lockheed Martin. Development began in the late 1990s, and its maiden flight occurred in 2002. The aircraft entered active service with the Republic of Korea Air Force in 2005. The resulting design is a highly modified derivative of the Lockheed Martin F-16 "Fighting Falcon", of which KAI license-builds as the "KF-16".

The Polish Air Force is buying these to replace the Su 22 and partially the Mig 29. If they had bought the F-16V it would have been available in about three to six years and the blick 20 is the one to train F-16V pilots nearly the same avionics. Still leaving the possibility to buy more F-35A or F-16s. The T-50 is the training aircraft with minimal strike capabilities, the TA-50 is the extended strike capabilities. The FA-50 is a true fighter with advanced training capabilities.

The FA50 may have lost the x-trainer competition for the USA airforce, but it have since won the lucrative internatinonal market selling 220 variants of this aircraft to date. It is combat proven in the Philippines fighting ISIS no less , where it conducted a night raid that injured the leader of the Maute group, and gave the final blow to ISIS group holed up in Marawi.

It's not lost yet, at least not completely. Boeing who won ran into problems and delivery will be delayed. US airforce loaned T50 and using them. Depending on situation at Boeing, US airforce may end up ordering T50 instead.

Malaysia is buying the very latest version which is Block 20. It's the highest spec LCA currently available.

FA-50 Block 20 is pretty much 2020 version of what F-20 would have been if it were successful. It's kinda funny that 2020 version of F-20 was developed (with help of Lockheed Martin) in the country that practically sealed the fate of the original version. (In that sense, FA-50 Block 10 would be comparable to 2020 version of F-5E/F) When F-20 was proposed for market outside US (US at that time did not want to export newly developed F-16), South Korea was one of the first potential mass-buyer. That was, until a F-20 crashed during demonstration flight in South Korea, with the president of the nation watching it. Obviously, the deal fell off, and South Korea later went with F-16 after US changed the arms export policy.

Light fighter jet is naturally cheaper than MRF because MRF is more advanced than light fighter jet. So don't compare that, you should compare the same level light fighter aircraft to light fighter aircraft.

Philippines F50 Ph is the only F50 in Asia that has fought in combat . PH is also the second country to have ordered it and is planning to get another squadron and a better version its going to be Block 20.

Of course, but county's need trainer fighter jets to train its own pilots. Pilots are more valuable than the aircraft that they fly on. Planes are replaceable, pilots are not.
