The number 1 reason for not passing your initial medical (different from existing pilots who want to renew medical- usually that's due to blood pressure, diabetes, vision changes, etc) BY FAR are psych medications or diagnosis. I'm a pilot and a doctor, but not a med examiner. Student pilots often do not know about the STRICT limitations on psych meds- antidepressants, ADHD meds, lithium etc. A little knowledge goes a long way. If you can get off your antidepressant for 6 months, then you should be good to go. If you take an SSRI (prozac, zoloft, etc), which something like 30% of Americans take, you can still pass but it is a major PIA (need to see a psychiatrist who attests that you are not a suicide or homicide risk). Another thing to remember- if you NEVER get a medical, you can fly as a sport pilot. BUT, if you fail a medical, you cannot. Many people screw this up. Do some research, and IF YOU CANNOT pass a medical, don't do one, fly light sport. Also, if you are an existing pilot, and develop diabetes or some diagnosis that WILL cause you to fail your next medical, you CAN simply choose to fly as a sport pilot- don't renew your medical. BUT, if you fail your medical, you are grounded, sport pilot and all. Good luck!

Now a paid commercial pilot. However I was color deficient in the red green spectrum and had to undergo a OCVT and Medical Flight test with the FAA ASI to prove that I was good enough to recognize aviation colors and be a safe commercial pilot. It pretty much has to be a 100% pass. You get light gun signals from the tower, the ASI asks you about colors on charts and that has to be 100%, and then you do a flight test where he asks you colors of lights and buildings and cars or boats or whatever. If you miss one that is a fail. Then your medical is stamped with “Not valid for not flying or color signal control” and then obviously no one will hire you with that limitation. However I did pass and got a LOE from Oklahoma City which is good for life and whenever I go in for my medical and they say “oh lets do the color vision test with the book and the pages with the dots” I just say here is my letter from the FAA and they say “Oh, never mind your good to go for color vision” The box is checked and I am good to go. Also I applied for a first class medical. If you apply for a second class medical and have to do this....In order to get your first class medical you have to do the whole color vision testing with the FAA again and if you miss one color you will have that limitation on your medical. So if you can just go for the first class from the get go. Hope it is informative, glad to provide info!

I have been flying for 35 years as a private VFR pilot. I got my last class 3 medical certificate in 2005 but then sold my Cherokee and didn't fly for a while. NOW, with COVID, I can't even make an appointment with a AME for several months, and a lot of them aren't taking new patients. So, my alternative is to get a BasicMed certificate from my family MD which I can use in lieu of a class 3, until I can get an appointment. I'm 69 yrs old and have to get my meds done every 2 years, but my biggest issue is the lockdown the government is doing because of the inflated numbers of COVID cases which prevent me from getting my class 3.

Hey guys, if you couldn't tell by my picture, I like to fall out of planes, intentionally of course :) I worked avionic repair with Navy and would like to persue piloting to fully encompass aviation. My main concern is that I have been recently diagnosed with a rare nuerology disease called Hereditary spastic paraplegia SPG 1. It basically affects muscles below the waist by adding spasticity (muscle tone, muscles are tense, don't fully relax). I have full control of all of my muscles and fine motor skills. I'm on a muscle relaxer with no side effects. I can't find anywhere in BasicMed or MED certification that remotely comes close to this condition. Is there a more in-depth manual the AME uses a a rule book or know who would have experience in this topic? Thanks

My understanding is they do not test for drugs. There is a UA given for a different reason (kidneys or liver? Not sure), but they don't test urine for drugs. That said, if you lie during the medical process you could get in big trouble, federal trouble, and be denied ever being able to obtain a medical & fly. If you have illicit drug, or alcohol issues, or legal problems with drugs or alcohol, you should contact a hard-to-find lawyer that deals with FAA pilot certification & medical issues before your medical.

You had to have a healthy artery or vein harvested from your body grafted to the blocked coronary artery. The grafted artery or vein bypasses the blocked portion of the coronary artery. Did you only have the one line run? If so it's nothing more than a low grade double or triple by-pass surgery. In 6 weeks without complications you would be fit for strenuous activity. A stress test would conclusively verify this. I don't understand why you think you wouldn't be certified.
@davemould82614 жыл бұрын

You can apply for, and usually receive, a demonstrated waiver. You will be required to perform certain tasks for the FAA, and if you can perform those tasks sufficiently, you will be granted a waiver to fly. There are some pilots with only one arm, only one leg, even no legs. Those medicals were granted by waiver. So don't give up.

How you exercise your privileges as a pilot will be up to the issuing authority; in the U.S. that is the FAA. Everybody I have known who has been issued a waiver has been able to fly passengers. I once knew an airline pilot who was blind in one eye. Actually, I know of a second one with only one eye.
