Structures, imbalances combined with impecable strategy can take you very far in chess. Magnus uses his pawns to attack major & minor pieces. I see it all the time in his games, yet I still have no clue on how to do it well 😂

For anyone who missed it, the Buzz Aldrin of 2800 ELO has the following strategy: make sure you’re better at chess than your opponent. After that, all you need to do is outplay him. I’ve gotta admit- it’s a brilliant strategy. I can’t poke any holes in it and I got my PhD in Logic from MIT. Sometimes you just have to look upon grandmasters in awe and warmly approve of their brilliance, even (especially) if you can’t understand it.

It’s brilliant for sure. Even for those of us shy a Phd from MIT . Now, to execute the plan…

very nice game. It's impressive how many times white could've grabbed one of those pawns on the queenside too early and probably miss the win. Qc6 is particularly nice.

"Changing the structure" why is this a good strategic technique? Is it because a safe-approaching Berlin player is not psychologically ready to handle a sharp structure, or is it because you create a weakness for the opponent, or

Pawns are the soul of chess. In most positions unless the board is devoid of pawns, because the lowly pawn is the least valuable piece on the board, it ironically exerts great influence in blocking lines and supporting because the opponent won't likely want to exchange anything else for that pawn except another pawn. This means that properly supported in a pawn chain the pawn can stand proud and laugh at any piece threatening it but if unsupported and isolated is easily taken off the board. This is the power of changing the pawn structure... At first the opponent is posed a certain set of problems and critical squares but after a change the opponent is posed different problems and squares, and his pieces may not be positioned as ideally for the new things that have to be considered.

Watch Magnus' games. He uses pawns to attack both major & minor pieces. He even uses pawns to checkmate the king. If you can master pawn structure & strategy, you can play really well. Way better than me 😂

@@tonysu8860 Interesting, so you are saying that changing the structure is a way to overload the opponent's pieces in the sense that in each structure there are best squares for the different pieces and they won't be configured for a different structure?

@@RealityCheck1 His games are quite hard to understand, he reject a lot of logical moves that engine thinks is fine. I am not really sure what is his approach to the chess game but it feels he always know when to attack and when to defend
