When I was 10' my dad (who ran a one man service and repair business) sawed his right thumb off in a radial arm saw. I went to work with him every day for about a year. It forced him to slow down and teach me because he couldn't just do it himself. It was rough for a while , but it was the best education a kid could have. When I got into high school shop class, kids would ask the teacher how to do something and he would just send them to me. Take it easy on that arm and put those kids to work. It will be good for both of you.

@@harpintn said no one ever. It's pinned, plated, splinted, wrapped and in a sling. Only way he's going to slow down healing is if he launches as a human canonball. Being in bed would just make for a weak mend. You need bloodflow and a little movement. It's like running makes your shin bones stronger... the body is always healling, movement and a little stress helps it heal better.
@jasonbarnett1256Ай бұрын
@@thebrowns5337 You're not right. This is a spiral fracture and the parts that need to heal don't just need stability from the plate they screwed in, they also need the body to have the resources to create a lot of new bone, heal marrow, capillaries and nerve endings which are embedded throughout the surface of the bone. If he keeps this up he may not make a full recovery and he'll always be compromised. Or, ya know, rub some dirt on it, cause that's what a caveman would have done, right?

I sympathize with you and your arm, Paul. While I never broke mine, I ended up with my right arm in a sling for a long time... twice! First time I was racing my motocross bike, the brakes faded and I went straight into a wall, over the handlebars, jamming my helmet into my chest and breaking my collar bone. Didn't realize it was broken until I tried to pick the bike up and ride it back, load it into my van. I tried to tough it out for a couple days, but finally went to a military hospital for an x-ray. They confirmed it was broken and told me I'd already set the bone, probably when I picked the bike up after the accident. Gave me an olive drab sling and told me to take it easy the next few weeks. The worst parts with an immobilized arm were taking showers and trying to sleep. Luckily, "soap on a rope" was a big thing back then, so that could serve as a sling in the shower. (No cast for a broken collar bone, though.) Worse, I couldn't get any sleep. Had to lay on my left side, and would roll over as soon as I nodded off, waking up with the sharp pain! I ended up sleeping on a sofa for several weeks... couldn't roll over in my sleep on that! Several years later, while in college, I had an all too similar accident on my bicycle. One morning pedaling to class at a pretty good clip, I pressed the brake lever to slow down and it broke off the handlebar, swung down into the front wheel spokes and brought the bike to an instant halt! I went over the handlebars again! This time nothing broke but I severely jammed my right wrist and elbow when I landed on the pavement. Off to the clinic for another sling to use for several weeks! This was during mid-term exams and I'm right-handed... but I was on some pretty serious pain killers and verrry relaxed. That's possibly why I did great on all my mid-terms. Even so, I don't recommend anyone try this method of test-taking.
