I loved this. Mr Schaller and Fabriano, are extremely generous in helping us aspiring painters in this trying time. As a retiree, I can’t afford expensive videos or lessons. This is an honor to learn from such an amazing artist. Thank you.

Hello from China! Tom, thank you so much for this tutorial video!! You don't know how much it taught me, especially when I've been doing realism oil painting. Quick notes for myself: 1. do not copy the photo, you can do a composition and value study and use it while doing the painting 2. values! values! values! 3. objects should connect with each other and speak to each other 4. leaving whites on the paper while we add values and colors, let them blur and grow into each other, that's a big charm of water color!

What a great demonstration, thank you so much. You have brightened this drizzly late winter morning and given mind blowing pointers on how to approach the currently scrubby and waterlogged countryside around here in this Hamburg suburb. If I may say, I deeply appreciate the expressive and articulate commentary. The remarks about Central Park are also very well received. Right on, great stuff, thank you.

Thanks so much, James - Very glad you found it helpful. I have watched so many instructional videos in my time and was always left with more questions than answers.. So when I began teaching, I determined to try my best to explain in real time why I decided to use this color, this brush, make this decision, etc. It may not always be the right thing to do - but I think it helps people to be able to make their own creative decisions

I wonder how you uplift a subject or an inspiration of your painting to a mystical level! Watching you paint also uplifts the minds of many to a state of inexplicable peace! I can compare it with some unknown mountain river, that flows energically over the rocks but gives immense peace to the mind and all the senses of the viewer. I can feel the feel of the place in your painting. It's my dream to paint like you one day! I don't think a few thousand words can express what I am feeling about this painting! I can only thank you from the core of my heart!

Once again, it's brilliant! Thank you so much Thomas, it's an honor to hear you explain all this and watch the magic. I'm inspired to break out my watercolors and give this thing another shot. I remember my last two watercolors took 12 hours a piece and I have just not been able to motivate myself to stick to a painting for 12hrs, but you show I am being too detailed and too tight. Thank you!

I have been admiring this style of watercolor painting but came across this channel only few days ago and I watched this video many times since then. Your videos answered all my questions from why we need a palette with wells , what to put in the wells, principles of design, what to see, how to see, how to select the subject etc.. do you let the first wash dry out completely before the second wash? while you are painting we dont see it happening
@thomaswschaller Жыл бұрын
Generally no - I like to keep the whole painting moving all at once. Of course, you can't get a crisp edge if you go back into very wet paint, so you may have to wait a bit longer in this area or that - working elsewhere as you do. But I don't often allow it to dry completely first

Its like piecing quilts. I learned to piece quilts from my great grandmother "Mama" Hamblett(born 1896). Its not the new way that people do now (Mother and I refer to it as stack and whack) Piecing quilts was making do with what ever you had on hand, a way of recycling. Mama always said it never matters the color, only to make sure that you place a dark next to a light.

Fantastic, thanks for much for sharing and the time spent not only in painting but all the camera work and editing required! Just my 2 cents: I absolutely love the composition of your original sketch, but I feel that although the light and dark was portrayed reasonably accurately to the sketch, the POSITION of those light and dark shapes moved too much and the final composition does not feel as balanced and powerful in terms of communicating story as the original sketch. In the original sketch the pavilion is much more centred in frame. Nonetheless, it's still a successful painting that we can also learn from :) Thanks
@thomaswschaller3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. But respectfully, I disagree. In the sketch, too much light was portrayed in the foreground and on the far right especially. - pulling the focus of the work in too many directions. Also the pavilion is too awkwardly dead center. So in the final color sketch version I corrected all this. And so finally, the values are much more balanced and moreover, the intent, balance, dynamics, narrative, and drama of the work is more clearly displayed in the final version.
@ryanoconnor79573 жыл бұрын
@@thomaswschaller I'm glad that you believe it is more true to your vision then! I would love to hear a bit of your commentary in the future for when and why you decide to make changes that deviate from your sketch plan (I know in some other videos you do comment on this), I believe it may help me to understand some important things that I am missing in my understanding of composition. I am like 100% fan of your sketches, so I don't always get the reasoning of why you change things. In this example, the composition changed from a largely diagonal dark "line" from corner to corner, into what seems to be more of an "L" shaped composition. Whether that is more balanced is certainly debatable, in my mind it is simply different ,and communicates a different mood.
@thomaswschaller3 жыл бұрын
@@ryanoconnor7957 I did do a commentary for this video. But I'm not sure if I addressed those specific issues or not. But anyway, everybody is free to have their own opinions and agree or disagree with any of my choices. And I certainly don't nail it every time. This was a pretty quick demo painting. For what it is, I was pretty happy with it. But that doesn't mean it is the only way for it to be done . I liked the diagonal energy in the sketch too and. I tried to keep it in the larger version. But the light in the foreground seemed a little too strong and distracting as the painting developed.

Wonderful though Central Park is, it isn’t true to say that there was nothing there, that it was ‘just farmland.’ There were communities on this land, and although not all residents were removed without receiving compensation, lack of wealth and status (by comparison, for instance, with owners of the first site chosen for the project) meant none had the choice to remain. Many went unwillingly. It’s good to know something of this history. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seneca_Village
