In this modern era of social media hype, you could easily be forgiven for thinking that everyone else's fishing trips except yours are always sunny and successful... Join Steve 'Starlo' Starling as he shares the warts-and-all lows and highs of a real day on the water in very tough conditions. He'll teach you a few nifty tricks... and also let you know that it's perfectly okay to sometimes think that the whole damn thing sucks!

As fisherman we sure do put ourselves in some horrible weather. But the rewards at times can be spectacular and the scenery can be amazing even in crap weather.

Wow, it’s inspiring to see you still fish in this weather, Starlo! I guess there is no excuse for me not to get up fishing on a 10-degree morning in Sydney now. 😅

As usual mate, a beautiful piece of production. Just looking over Lake Macquarie here now, a cold 13 degrees, windy and a crap tide, and I'm not going out in the yak! But then i look at you, and think of all the days i spent, through frost and snow on the Turon or the Fish Rivers, and i think, we are all bloody crazy! Cheers mate. I might just go for a quick flick after all.

I admire your dedication. Fly caught trout especially in miserable weather, in my view, reflect amazing fishing skills and motivate fisherfolk to leave the heated lounge and enjoy the rewards in overcoming adverse conditions. On the other hand, no fish caught feeds the determination factor!

Christ Starlo and here I am hoping it doesn’t get below 20c overnight. Nice trout . That would definitely kill me down there the cold 😊

It's true what you say about wading quietly, I have had fish spooked out of cover and ended up finding them sheltering between my ankles. Glad to see you enjoying the nice Tassie weather too 😄

Glad it helped. If it's any consolation, the tough times NEVER go away, but we CAN slowly reduce them as we learn more. Tight Lines!

My late great uncle had a shack next to little pine. I remember going up there in winter and freezing our butts off. I've had good results with bettle deer hair dry flies from a boat on little pine back in the 90's. Fergus lake is worth a look as well.
@StarloGetsReel

Cheers for that! I've never fished Fergus. I'll put it on the list!

Often the shallow reefy spots I fish for drummer leave me wet and cold but all is forgotten once that rod buckles over.

I still love fishing but I can't say I'm that keen any more, certainly not keen enough to go out in THAT temperature. 😁 If I go fishing at all now it's nearly always in one of my kayaks.
