This is how the colonizers rewarded their so called allies who entered a protectorate agreement with them. No wonder Ashanti or Asante didn't want any part of this nonsense and resisted the Gold Coast nonsense. Until the defeat of Yaa Asantewaa in 1900, Asante was sovereign. Asante was the last frontier for the British Empire. They were technically only colonized for 50 years.

I don't think you don't understand what the guy was saying. Ashanti was not part of it because there were no Ashanti educated people that is the reason they were not included.

@@williamhanson4154 Mr. Hanson, education is not only in English. Asantes were well educated. If Western education is your yardstick, research the Asante Princes Owusu Ansa and Nkwantabisa who were some of the early Gold Coasters to go abroad for Western education.

@@NanaKNOwusu Good reply for a miseducated William Hanson... To be uneducated at all is a loss but to be miseducated is one of life's biggest tragedy....this is one of the reasons for our situation as a people. To think English or the white man's way is the sole mode of education is totally misplaced. Maybe you should research more about ancient Egypt.

This guy is just a sham. He knows NOTHING. In 1831, after the British coalition defeated Asante in the DODOWA War. The Anglo-Asante Treaty of 1831, enjoined Asante to give up all the territories it controlled "South of the River Pra. These territories were placed under British Protection... The British Protected Territories. Thus began the effective colonization of what became the Gold Coast Colony. The 1831 Anglo-Asante Treaty was signed by Britain which was represented by Governor Captain George Maclean who had assumed office in 1831, and a delegation of Asante Chiefs representing the Asantehene Osei Yaw Akoto. Then in 1844, a new Governor called Commander Hill (a Naval Officer) assumed the governorship of the British Protected Territories. Some Fante Chiefs andKwadwo Tibu, the Dankyirahene (Denkyira) needed assurances from the new governor that he would protect them pursuant to the terms of the 1831 Treaty aganst any resurgence by Asante. So they Chiefs submitted themselves to British rule by signing a BOND called the Bond of 1844 to assure the British that they would not do anything to sully their relationship with Britain. There were THREE clauses of the BOND of 1844. 1. The Chiefs agreed to surrender their independence to Britain. 2. The Chiefs agreed to submit to the supremacy of British laws, rather than their own customary laws. 3. The Chiefs assured the Governor, that pursuant to his protection, they would not adopt any policies relative to their custom such as 'panyarring', human sacrifice, etc. They surrendered their total freedom to the British. The Bond of 1844 completely made these inept coastal Chiefs total toadies of the white people. So when some of the Chiefs led by the Chief of Mankessim realized their folly, and decided to form a FANTE CONFEDERATION in 1765 to 'protect' their 'freedom', it was too late. The Confederacy died after a few years.British control was enforced. Asante remained an independent NATION.. Then in 1873, the Brtitish decided to attack Asante in Kumase itself. This led to the SAGRENTI WAR. Asante was defeated in early March 1874. So on July 24 1874, Britain formally declared the British Colony of the Gold Coast..... ASANTE remained an independent NATION, not part of the Gold Coast. In 1877, the British moved the capital of the Colony from Cape Coast to the tiny village of Accra. Asante remained an independent nation until after the YAA Asantewaa War of 1900. In 1902, the British declared ASANTE a CROWN COLONY to be governed separately from the Gold Coast with a British Resident Commissioner based in Kumase. In January 1935,the Basante Confederacy which was abolished by Britain in 1896 after Prempeh I was sent into exile, was RESTORED. Otumfuo Prempeh II became ASANTEHENE.... In 1946, he agreed to merge the administration of the Gold Coast Colony with that of ASANTEMAN. In recognition, the Governor Sir Alan Burns invited him to Accra to preside over the new Gold Coast Constitution which is usually referred to as The Burns Constitution of 1946. Ghana became a unitary nation from Accra to Paga., with three Provinces: Gold Coast Colony; ASANTE; and the Northern Territories. All that talk about FANTE is Bullshit. Nothing came out of whatever they imagined. The Nation of Ghana was created out of Asante, beginning in 1831. Asante fought the British in 1897; 1823; 1826; 1874; 1896; 1900.... all to ensure the DIGNITY of the BLACKMAN in Africa.

Massa you have deviated from the topic. The guy is specifically accounting on how nationalism impacted Independence of Ghana which has nothing to do with Ashanti supremacy.

In historical discourse, we do not use the word "sham" to describe your fellow historian. Besides, you didn't get the context. He was tracing the history of nationalism and it's impact.

A lot of inaccuracies in your essay. If you attempt to change history it will always not make sense.
