Don't print it flat, Give it some "slats" (registration keys) so the parts fit together. That'll let the glue do it's job and you wont have to worry about lining it up. Also print with slightly thicker walls, that'll let you sand it to make everything nice and smooth. Just use primer not paint/primer. Sand then prime, once dry, sand any areas that look ruff then reapply primer, repeat this until it's smooth. I wouldn't go crazy with tiny details on a 3D printer, it adds to the print time and overall work time... but if you're going to add them anyway, tape them off before you paint or sand then finish them with the XTC. Make sure to not get that on your primer. Once everything is fully dry, prime it one more time, then you're ready for paint. Side note; I use about 100-120 grit paper but I don't have huge print lines so you may need a lower grit to start then move to higher grit. I stick to Krylon Color-Master paints and wouldn't use Plasti Dip at all. You're better off sticking to a single brand because you never know how brands will effect each other.
@IICubeII7 жыл бұрын
Further more, after reading the comments... Don't buy an abs glue. You can make your own by melting down spare/trash ABS parts in acetone. This sticky mess can then be spread onto two parts to effectively wield them together once it is dry... however normal super glue has never failed me.
@DarthBiomech7 жыл бұрын
In most case you have NO CHOICE but print flat, to maximize contact with the print bed and minimize overhangs. In this case making holes and putting rods of some kind there (toothpicks or just nails with head cut off) works just as well. Also details do not add to overall print time. A cube of given size will print maaaaaybe just ten minutes faster than same cube with engravings on it. Considering that your average print is several hours, anyway...

@Albanez395 жыл бұрын
Documentaries that portray multiple locations and characters are usually edited this way. The guys should just get some more experience with this kind of editing. It's pretty hard (artistically), and the cuts don't always go hand in hand together, especially when you have to edit and upload a video in 2 days. Documentaries usually have months to try different edits until they find the best one.

I had an extremely similar experience with Facebook. The big difference being that I am a complete nobody and I absolutely did not upload a massively popular video. Also, I deactivated an account using a fake name, and was unable to create a new one using my real name. I also got the request to upload a photo, and a few days later the account was shut down. Lather, rinse, repeat x5. Since I don't know anyone who knows somebody at Facebook, I just have to live without an account. Wouldn't be a problem, because I hate the platform and have no personal desire to use it, but I need it for my job.

Sam, next time you're making prints designed to be glued together, make guide pins. Just a few 5mm protrusions in one part with a set of matching 6mm (6mm so they don't bottom out even with glue in them) indents in the other so they align together nicely. Speeds up gluing and makes the parts sturdier.

For fusing parts together. Sanding and epoxy is widely used. Welding with friction or wit acetone, when you do PLA for example. Making small nudnged on your button layer, don't have to be fancy or supported. So you can then print a pin or use a stick of wood as an interface for the epoxy so it's straight. Design a mechanism or use some of the many open pins, snap together and connectors widely available on thingiverse ... But many or OpenSCAD

If you're looking for a better way to fuse parts that have a lot of extra surface area like your rifle 3D print there you can create 3 pegs in one part and 3 holes in the other. This'll keep the parts aligned and then you can put instant epoxy either in the holes or on the plates touching each other. If you want to create an invisible seal just use something like Bondene across the surface area. It'll melt the plastic pieces on the surface which will then fuse and create a solid plastic piece. It's more rugged and creates a tough part.

Random combo for a weapon: perhaps designing a small aiming/targeting screen that attaches to the side of the rifle. maybe actually attach a screen to it or lights. That looks awesome Sam nicely done! I haven't had the chance to play with XTC-3D yet, it looks like a pretty solid solution though. How much sanding did you have to do afterwards? For combining parts printed in PLA my go to is CA glue or epoxy. CA and a light sanding for flat to flat and epoxy if I'm trying to embed something since it can take advantage of the layer lines to help it hold where as they make things much harder for CA. Its also extremely helpful to add pining holes to your model and either print pegs or use some thin carbon fiber or epoxy resin tube to add some support to the joint, particularly against shearing forces. You can get either at TAP plastics or similar for pretty cheap. Have you tried using Rustoleum filler primer for smoothing and finishing before? It's like a regular primer but much thicker and it dries into something like a thin layer of bondo. I picked up some a few weeks ago and have been really impressed with the results, definitely still requires some sanding to get a seamless finish though. Keep up the great work, can't wait to see whats next!

In regards to the "sci-fi" ar-15 rifle build, I think creating a bridge between the bottom of the mag well and around a 1/4 along the handguard would do very well in breaking up the "ar" signature lines. Making it seem even more futuristic due to the fact people aren't going to be associating it with one of the world's most common rifle platforms. Another way to do this is add a foregrip with the lower end having a support bar to the mag well. Yet another idea is to use a "thumbhole" style stock to further disassociate this weapon from your more conventional type of firearms, considering a lot of ar-15's do not use thumbhole stocks.

If PLA plastic Acetone works for welding and smoothing however you need to know how to use it properly as it can greatly deteriorate and soften the plastic. you can still use glue, it works just fine but if you want applying acetone directly to both sides works extremely well. After this you can use acetone vaper to get rid of the lines. A easy way of doing this is absorbing acetone in paper towels and placing them in a container. then shake or apply heat. actually, just look it up. instructions are really easy to fine on the web. Hope this was useful and good luck.- i just started watching you guys so if this is the wrong plastic sorry ignore me. If you have already tried this, give it a second change and experiment a bit more.

As I said in the previous video comment - make several holes with diameter of a toothpick, or better some kind of metal or plastic rod of constant known diameter (a piece of fillament would be perfect, but they're slightly curved, and 3mm thickness is a bit overkill, imo). It will serve as guides for your parts to come together, so it will be nigh-impossible to glue them together unaligned. I use cyanoacrylate "instant" glue, in most cases it glues things quickly and securely, though it does not forgive mistakes and can glue your fingers too.

You should 3D print a sort of rig, to hold 2 HTC Vive controllers in the shape of a gun. Where the controllers can easily clip in and out of the rig and make gun fights a bit better in VR

Sam describing the triangular rifle handguard immediately had me thinking of the original M-16 plastic handguards. And then he says it has a 70s or 80s asthenic. Bingo

You can use wood putty on the gaps or mix together some superglue and baby powder to make a filler, sand it till smooth

I think they have flat tape that you can use to emit different lighting and stick it to the rifle. Very pretty really cool if there was like a battery compartment you can install in the rifle so that way there is a power source and you can put some kind of lighting on the gun itself. Maybe a battery compartment in the butt of the rifle?

Sam with the size of the barrel expanded and the scope being so large, it might be smart to extend the stock back a bit to make it fit together better with the idea that the gun's good for longer range.
