You are correct. U.S. 'meddling' likely reached its peak back when the Dulles brothers were in power during the Eisenhower administration. But I've heard others counter the 'meddling' narrative. They note that if we fade from world engagement, other entities WILL become those steering the world towards their ideals. They ask 'Should we be the one, or should other aspirants, such as the Soviets/Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, etc., push their beliefs and agendas, free of influence by the U.S. and our allies?" "Should we just look inwards, contemplating our navels?"

The lesson from WWI and WWII is not that we "should have gotten in sooner." It's that we're lucky we didn't get in sooner. We got in right when we needed to, and as a result the US came out of both wars stronger than any other participants. America shouldn't be an insolationist, but when we do get involved, it should be to win. No half measures.

I think many Americans want the USA to be considered the most powerful nation on earth, however, they don't want to make any effort or sacrifice in order to earn that status. We have never had a war on our territory except for the one between ourselves in the Civil War. The 9/11 attack tried to show us what war on our turf might look like.

My first take on this interview is his historian is an apologist for Charles Lindburg who was dead wrong on WWII before Peral Harbor. Then he said Linbeg was a Country Club anti-Jew "because everyone was than" is nonsense. To not at least admit the possibility and call for absolute neutrality that Hitler and Japan would never come after The US was Lindburg's stupidity. Does this historian even see the world is in more danger than since 1941 right now ? We are !!
@meidassecondsoprano15017 сағат бұрын
I agree. This is a terrible misrepresentation of all Americans as “Country Club” or casual social anti semites at that time. It simply is a collaborationist ex post facto justification for Lindbergh’s and his wife, Ane Morrow Lindbergh’s full throated admiration for Hitler and his Third Reich’s policies, including its laws against Jews that led to their extermination of six million Jewish men, women and children.
@user-gi9cl5yt4w16 сағат бұрын
Your not entirely wrong in the 'apologist' idea, Lindbergh was an isolationist and he was an anti semite, rationalizing it the way he does, is just another way of confirming its existence. He was a national hero for a moment, unfortunately then as is today, people thought he was more than he really was (pilot then, reality tv personality now). HW Brands is a well respected author and historian, but in this interview, he's just rationalizing one person's behavior in respect to the Roosevelt administration and its support of Britain against the nazi's. It's unfortunate that interviews like this happen, they (Brands and others) have a way of rewriting history bit by bit. Its the slow incremental rewriting of American mores and history, its been going on for about 60 yrs now. Get use to it, its only going to get worse... This is revisionism of history in regards to WW2, it was just a matter of time and as they say, 'timing is everything. ", especially in relation to the incoming administration, which by the way will be isolationist...

Nature abhores a vacuum. If not us, the USA then who. And if not now when. As in the dominoes falling. The usa was barely a major power before wwtwo. Our military was very weak. What we had were lots of resources and most importantly two very large oceans separating us from the old world. Now after 80 odd years as a super power and 30 years as the leading super power we are stuck with the title if the worldw policeman. Like it ir not. Honestly the comparison to 1941 is really ridiculous. Im an isolationist at heart. The world could go to hell in a hand basket as far as im concerned. However the resulting chaos would be terrible and something i dont wont to live with. When else can do it. The UN. What a joke. The EU. Even more so. Do you really want to live under china or Russian control.

"Not-in-my-country-club-kind-of-anti-Semite"---what??? As opposed to what other kind? First of all, that is a totally inchoate means of defining anti-Semitism if Brand's idea is to offer some relative scale of bigotry. And if Lindberg expressed his anti-Semitism that way, then the burden of proof on how restrained its manifestations where otherwise rests with him. It is as if Brands is trying to define "a little bit pregnant." One would expect more of an historian at an elite US university---or maybe not.

The slow and incremental rewriting of history, CBS and this interviewer should rethink what their purpose is. Is it News or an opinion by a historian. Lindbergh was a isolationist and an anti semite (saying that it wasn't uncommon just further confirms it) and completely wrong. I'm all for a good history lesson, but hw brands historical opinion is just that, an interpretation of history and a particular individual. Then as now, misinformation vs fact...

MAGA is a short sighted political movement. It thinks it’s dismantling a so called “deep state”, when it’s actually dismantling the Republic itself. Trump doesn’t believe in “America First”, he believes in “Trump First”. Under MAGA, by hitching their cart to the Trump donkey, the US is cutting its nose off to spite its face. If the US backs away from leading the world (i.e., “America First”), it encourages a multi-polar world, which is inherently more dangerous than a uni-polar or bi-polar world.

Two, his plans are plainly unamerican that go against every single ethic and norm and law we have developed since around 130 years ago. Three, the voters got NO CHANCE re the prosecutions to hear the content! That's a miscarriage of justice bcuz there was no public disclosure at all in toto, let alone in an organized fashion and thus the voters were disenfranchised by getting impresion the cases are weak,w hich they were NOT! THIS is a rolling coup since 2020 and everyone can see it who EVER picked up a history book in their lives, and even those who didn't but have impressions of political reality by being well informed.
