I don't think any discussion of US politics is complete without recognizing the strength of partisan, particularly right wing, media. The majority of Trump voters have been propagandized into disbelieving their own eyes, and the left has been led to believe that people are rational rather than tribal.

@@aftdelWhat exactly are you referring to when you say “this is a perfect caricature of a certain kind of progressive ‘thinking’?” Maybe you’d care to clarify? What’s your comment a reply to? The original video? One of the two comments here? If so which one? In any case if everything you’ve watched, heard or read here is so “utterly wrong” and the “precise opposite of the truth” then maybe there’s something definite, better and more truthful you’d like to elaborate upon and share with us all on behalf of all you truly enlightened people out here … when you’re all not busy being “wobbly”? Or did you just learn the word “caricature” this semester in sophomore English and been waiting to try it out trolling in a KZbin comment section?
@aftdel
@aftdel Ай бұрын
@@B_Estes_Undegöetz Well let’s see. My comment is a reply to the main comment above me. Pretty easy to see that. To call the majority of 76 million Trump voters “propagandized”. Really? The lawyers and doctors and electricians and nurses and bankers and store owners and plumbers? That’s utterly wrong, not to mention risible. “Right wing media”? The mainstream media is almost all left wing, who said the ugliest things I’ve ever heard said in a presidential election before about a candidate. They don’t speak to power, they defend power. Democrat power. Woodward and Bernstein is long gone. I could give hundreds of examples. I grant the alt media has plenty of right of center folks, but plenty left of center too. Let’s dispense of the ridiculous word “propagandized” shall we. It radiates heat, not light. But my favorite part, the bestest part, is the noble declaration that the left is rational not tribal. The left not tribal. Hilarious! So…the opposite of the truth. And yes, a “caricature” (shout out to my 10th grade English teacher Mr. Steinman). And grotesque.

Trump's endurance can be summed up by his quasi-religious appeal. It doesn't matter how many lies he's told, how many laws he's broken, or how much bigotry he shows, his followers feel existential threats from every corner and their fears are answered with the fire and brimstone that would surely impress preachers from another age. He cuts through the mucky muck of a thousand voices and becomes elevated to savior. It's remarkable the human propensity to assuage fear of the unknown.

Meh, I think he just hates the same public narratives, and narrative-pushers, that a lot of people hate. He has a lot of true believers, but not nearly enough to get him elected. Those who voted for him through held-noses, or allowed him to be elected by staying home, were quite simply saying NO to the new liberal elite that--through its control of most institutions--has abrogated to itself the power to decide who people are and what they can think and say (enforced now through censorship).

Thomas Friedman starts his infomercial by making the assertion that the "woke agenda" and "defund the police" were factors in the 2024 Presidential election. Using phrases like this, which have no common meaning bypasses our rational language-using capacity. This helps us understand something about propaganda, advertising, public relations and why so much popular political discussion is irrational.

4:15 -- "Sometime in the last 10 years, people went to the grocery store and the person behind the register wasn't wearing a baseball hat." This is the example Tom chooses to highlight in order to illustrate cultural drift so alienating to typical American voters that it's made them turn to Trump? Seriously? 1) No major grocery store chain that I'm aware of in the US let's their employee's wear a baseball hat to work. A standard baseball cap with the store logo on it was part of the uniform around 20 years ago, but not everyone wore it, and they're considered optional now. 2) Why would working class types feel alienated by seeing other working class types wear baseball caps? Working class people love sports, they love to represent their teams and talk about sports with fellow fans. The types of people who'd be alienated by cashiers or any other working class person for that matter wearing a ballcap aren't Trump voters, if anything they're the more educated and higher income types who have, since 2012, been trending Democrat. People like, oh I don't know... Tom Friedman.

The solution is for each to strive to do no harm.

Thomas Friedman has no credibility. 25 years ago he ran around making lots of money by saying the "world is flat". Not sure, but it seems he meant that country borders were disappearing and goods and services could be provided from anywhere. As someone who has lived in many countries on 4 continents, I knew this was BS, but had to listen to his nonsense as an IBM employee. Before he makes any other comments or gives more interviews, he needs to apologize and explain to the American people why he was so very wrong.
