6:51 This footage of X-Men vs. Street Fighter is amazing! I had no idea the Saturn could do stuff like this. Technically this is the Saturn along with the 4 MB RAM expansion cart. Still, it's the Saturn hardware actually drawing these huge and detailed characters, and these effects that require redrawing the entire screen very quickly. Just seeing this footage, you'd guess it was a Dreamcast or PS2 port of the arcade game. It's amazing to think this is running on hardware released in late 1994 (for the original Saturn release).

Not only is SLX's voice and presentation getting better every video... he keeps putting distance between himself and the other YT "stars" with his intense knowledge, production values, notes, carefully edited and thought out segments, informative details on hardware, honest opinions, and willingness to take the gloves off when it's needed. I love several other retro gamers videos, but none compare to SLX to be honest; even the best of the others are, to be kind, pretty toothless, and higher on churning out a million videos per hour versus actually putting in the work like SLX. Great breakdown. Saturn emulation is great now. Ive been playing most of these games on emulation now. I played through around 60 more saturn games since I got the newer emulation focused PC in 2017. Prior to that , on my old machine, saturn wasnt even available. I only owned a few games when I got the system in the USA, long ago. It was basically dead by that point and I got it used. These videos are great as I still have alot to explore on the console.

TheConsole Killer Mednafen (Beetle Saturn) core is getting better and better. Compatibility is already at 9x%, and it's getting close to what Genesis Plus GX is for Genesis - the point of emulation being *better* than original hardware in everything.

@@shadowflash705 Nice. I mostly use Retroarch to emulate saturn now but I have a few other emulators on the machine just in case one doesnt work with certain games. That rarely occurs on saturn though, if ever. I like retroarch since its fast to configure controllers and save and load states. Its great to see emulation evolve though. That was the reason I ended up selling all my old consoles and switching over to emulation.

@@NB-1 Definately reccomend checking it out. I recently beat God Hand on Hard with no issues on PSXE emulator. Thats a real precise game, so I dont think youll have any issues if youre using the right emulator and settings. Between PS2 and Saturn Ive probably played through over 100 games since I got them emulated in 2017. I havent updated some of the emulators so they may be even further improved, but have not had issues with games that were compatible. Occasionally a game doesnt run on the PS2 emulator but its rare. Everything seems to work on the Saturn emulator Im using, Retroarch, but I do switch emulators anytime I have compatibility issues.

@@NB-1 No problem. I know how that can be. I go through alot of extreme modes and games and Ive done some lag tests by feel. When I upgraded from a plasma to an OLED tv I noticed a big difference on the OLED in terms of imperceptible latency. Only in game mode though. I tested this by beating Mike Tyson's Punchout legit for the first time on the TV and emulator. When switching off game mode accidentally one time, I got demolished. Metal Storm on expert mode is brutally precise and I tested that as well as games like Gun.Smoke for the arcade on MAME. Certain old games and shooters are great input lag tests. You may be more sensitive to it if you focus more on old twitch shooters though, so you may want to tweak some settings, as you said.

More videos like this would be cool if you have the right subjects to do them on, I'm sure you could probably do a similar thing for all the Sega hardware (and probably some software), as there are generally loads of ignorant comments about most subjects, even if they haven't been left on your vids or directed at you. I try to most of the time. This video was actually problematic. I kept getting errors on the final cut in audio and graphics overlays. I didn't know where the issue was so I edited it down until it would render out correctly. I just went with what I had at that point.

TBH i i never ever played on a Saturn, even though i saw the machine release on a magazine in early 95, the Saturn was oficially released here the same year but the PSX and n64 dominated the market and i did the choice for the sony console. i´m very anxious about the coming of my machine, i´m a little worried cos our mail sucks and the waiting is killing me but what is to wait some days more when you already waited for nearly 25 years? the Saturn was always a wish of mine and i´m certain it won´t disappoint me!

The Saturn has the cleanest RGB output of any other system. This didn't surprise me that much given how bright and vivid the Genesis RGB was. The SNES always looked good but it seemed Nintendo favored a softer look.

Sega Lord X you did another great video on your favorite Sega system covering everything except...the Saturn Netlink. This gets overlooked alot and was a great asset to video gaming. I had it when I owned the Saturn and this is what introduced me to the Internet as at that time I had no clue what the Internet was. Only a hand few of games supported it but I had great time playing others online and thought that Sega should of given the Netlink feature a serious push in their marketing department. I you have the Netlink or have experience with it in the past please do a video on it.

Thanks for the clarification on transparencies! I knew the Saturn could do it, but was unaware of the VDP1 vs. VDP2 differences in that regard. Also, I was unaware of the FRAM mods/upgrades. I'll have to look into that. I'm definitely looking forward to Professor Abrasive's VCD slot solution.

It was sort of the moment I realized I'm more interested in following the twists and turns of the gaming industry, the business and technology side, the personalities involved... than I am necessarily interested in actually playing the games. I think what might be perceived as a pro-Saturn bias on the part of Next Generation, is partly just a reflection of the Saturn's improved stature in Japan relative to the US. Next Generation probably puts a lot more weight on big releases on the Saturn than does the average gamer in 1996 in America. Friends and I were mostly paying attention to games on the PSX. In a detail largely lost to history, the PlayStation was called the PSX in the mid to late 90's. Nobody called it the PS1 until after the PS2 was released. Geez, listen to me... "Back in my day..."

Sony had the same issues with the PS3 that Sega had with the Saturn. They built a console with very difficult hardware for 3rd party developers to work with. You can say that Sega could very well do transparencies. But if a 3rd party developer was going to miss a deadline to make it work. They would rather just find an alternative and move on.

My biggest issue with the Sega Saturn is the dither mesh. It wasn't so noticable back then on an older TV, but now sticks out so bad I've had to get PS1 versions. I still own one and respect what it can do when properly programmed.

I was playing Saturn games on a Core 2 Duo based laptop back in 2011 using SSF. While there were sometimes minor issues with sound or graphics, most games I played were still completely playable and came very close to original hardware. Anyone who thinks Saturn emulation is still what it was in the mid-late 00s hasn't been paying attention.

Sorry for the double post, but I just wanted to give my thoughts on the FRAM mod. Every Saturn I've ever owned (and I've owned 8 over the years) has had an extremely finicky cartridge slot. I always have to sit there for hours on end, trying to get the Saturn to detect the cartridge. Every Saturn I've ever owned (even brand new unopened) has done this with every cartridge I own. So, no, "just buying a RAM cart" isn't an ideal solution, especially considering that the chip needed for the FRAM mod runs about 10 for $10 (that's $1 a piece).

Perhaps you are stuffing 3rd party carts into the slot? Action Replays? Memory Card Plus? ST Key? Game Shark? They often are thicker than the official carts and bend the pins. I have Saturn's as well that I have been the only owner of, and the cart slots work like champs with the official carts I've always used. And while its true that FRAM chips are cheap, most people need to pay someone to install them, making it much more expensive. Of course, the option is always a good thing. If you have 3rd party carts that are wrecking your slots, a FRAM is ideal.

The Sega Saturn is perhaps my favorite underdog console with a lot of hidden gems as well as dream from fighting and racing games. My Macbook Pro from mid-2009 has OpenEmu runs most Saturn games like a champ. I can only imagine what it'll be like once I get a new laptop and/or tower.

The best way to save your games is the floppy disk, high capacity and never lose your saves, but it is pretty expensive nowadays. The next solution is pseudo saturn, a cartridge that saves into a sd card and even directly during the game, the bad thing is the loading time for saving or loading the backup ( sometimes more than 30 seconds)

What a great video. You totally outdid my expectations, which were very high. I kinda like mesh transparencies. The true transparncy effetcs on Saturn, Playstation, snes are sometimes too beautiful so to say. They attract too much attention making them look out-of-place. Interesting tid bit is that MArvel Super Heroes runs without/1M/3M modes. So that isin 3 different modes. I think this is the only game that has 3 modes. I hope I am correct about that one as that is just burned into my brains somehow. (or not if I'm wrong) Never noticed any differences in mt 60hz modded PAL and Japanese Saturns. But testing is knowing I guess. I can't imagine that there is a bad version. It's Sega! I'm supporting that Saturn hack project Interesting that Saturn emulation runs on old hardware now. I remember a time where expensive pc's were needed. I find myself requesting a part 2 of probably about every video you make. This is no exception.

Retrobit could make 3D Pad Controller alternative, because its prices on ebay are too high. Standard controllers still work well after 20-25 years, they are very solid build and still cheap. Saturn is maybe the most interesting machine of past years, because of its extraordinary hardware and solid base of games. I love 2D fighters on this system :) One problem is lot of untraslated Japanese games, including fighting games (yes, fighting games needs also translation). Saturn need more english translations!

Thanks for this! I must admit my understanding of the Saturn hardware is from memory (so that's some years ago!) so maybe I misremember or perhaps never quite understood fully at the time. (One thing I recall at the time of release was some engineers speaking out and expressing annoyance at the rushed release of the Saturn as it wasn't ready for launch and still had issues to iron out.) It's kinda hard to do research now as separating fact from fiction takes... well time! And effort. So thanks again. Always a pleasure.

Love SEGA Lord X!!! Love SEGA Saturn, as I am an owner of a model 1 and 2 + many games. Always love content on the SEGA Saturn and loved this. Made things much clearer for me as a late entry to SEGA Saturn ownership. By far my favourite console because of the awesome import game library ( especially shooter 'em' ups ). Knew about it as a kid but everybody craped on the Saturn so never bothered to have a look in but what a mistake that was. Love the Saturn, love to know any content on it. Great stuff SEGA Lord X! Love your show. 👍

The pity about the Prof Abrasive's Patreon, is that you can't donate enough to pre-order the card itself. As it's currently the only alternative to the Phoebe CD drive emulator, this also means we're going to have to wait a very long time until it sees full release.

The Dreamcast sh4 specs were released as open source so it's emulation didn't need almost reverse engineering, just sticking to the open standard, and the Power VR chip was stock, not customised, so their ABI were known and could be emulated just as easy. Not without caveats, as with any emulation but good enough. Saturn hardware on the other hand was closed, and required every bit of reverse engineering, even 16 bit console emulation isn't perfect currently, yet, there we are

It would be interesting if you will talk about the development software kits and how sega later on tryed to make it easier to for devs to make conversions from an platform to the saturn, but using quadralic to triagle polygons,would be definitely an interesting topic.
