There was a British Robin Hood series for children in the early 1970's that was wonderful. The final episode was literally a show stopper, it ended with Robin's poisoning in the nunnery. I would love to know the particulars of that series and if DVDs were available now ?
@marcswanson70664 жыл бұрын
Well done. With Robin's identity remaining a mystery along with his frailties and vices, the legend will continue to serve to mankind. When thought of as more of an abstraction or ideal than a flesh and blood person, he will maintain super hero of western civilization status like Arthur, Beowulf, and to some extent the more transparent Wallace.

God bless the bards. There were centuries without radio or TV. The only entertainment came from the traveling tale tellers and singers. And what happens when a few "professionals" get together for a pint? They share their stories, swapping round verses and choruses, adding in more time relevant details. This goes on for CENTURIES!!!! Eventually some monk or over educated nobleman dips quill in ink... This explains the Norse sagas, the Arthur legends and the Robin Hood stories. There were originally a few kernels of fact in these tales, but those facts have become so over embroidered that we may never find the thread of Truth in them. Which is fine. Because humans love to tell stories.

To be made an outlaw you had to fail to attend court on 3 consequetive times. However, as few poor people had any faith in the protection of the law they would flee the area and became outlaws. You could only have your outlaw status lifted by the court which put it on you, nor you get aid legally from the Church. As an outlaw anyone could maim or kill you without getting into trouble with the law.

I remember reading in my magazine MEDIEVAL WARFARE There was a guerrilla fighter called William of Cassingham. who fought against the French who were allied to the 1st Rebel Barons during the Barons war. This guerrilla leader was a commoner. He was nottied for his powers with a bow and his guerrilla force consisted of mostly archers. They actually burnt the French siege camp around Dover at one time. Some people think that the Robin Hood tales are based on the exploits of William Cassingham. “ A certain youth, William by name, a fighter and a loyalist [to King John] who despised those who were not, gathered a vast number of archers in the forests and waste places [of the Kent and Sussex Weald], all of them men of the region, and all the time they attacked and disrupted the enemy, and as a result of their intense resistance many thousands of Frenchmen were slain. Tony Robinson has his facts WRONG. The earliest tales of Robin do NOT mention Barnsdale Forest. The second verse says "Robin stood in Bernesdale, Leaning on a tree, And by him stood Little John, a good yeoman was he". Bernesdale is also spelt elsewhere in the tale as Bernysdale. Historian Jim Lees theorises that this is in fact Byrunsdale (also referred to in historical documents as Brinnesdale), and was about 3 miles North of Nottingham Castle. These days marked on maps as Old Basford. Turning Bernesdale into Barnsdale just because it "sounds like" is lazy translation and dubious historical research. The very earliest tales also give his enemy as SPECIFICALLY the Sheriff of NOTTINGHAM. (Gisborne turns up later as a bounty hunter, but Robin kills him.)
@thomaswhittaker41375 жыл бұрын
There was no uniform spelling until about the 1700s as far as I know, but the name Wentbridge is the setting for one of the ballads, it's in Barnsdale although Barnsdale wasn't a forrest, a forrest was a legal jurisdiction.

@iangordoncraig26785 жыл бұрын
@@andrewwyatt1784 Agreed. He does a good job on Time Watch, and the excavations. But I think on this his mindset was still on the children's series / farce "Maid Marian and Her Merry Men". A lost opportunity. People need to stop looking for garvestones which include a name like Robin / Robert, and stop looking at Crusades in the 11th / 12th century. Michael Reuel's book "Robin Hood Existed" places him much later and in my opinion gets it right: robin-hood-was-here.blogspot.com/2016/11/robin-hood-existed-book-by-miachael.html

If you're gonna go the mythical route, lets remember that when the Green Man figure a.k.a. Robin Goodfellow was prominent, English retained more of it's Germanic, and Celtic linguistic roots, whereas the later tales have more French linguistic influences. Keeping that in mind, since we're also talking about an archer, remember that there was a blind god called Hǫðr in Norse Mythology that Loki tricked into firing an arrow at Baldur to kill him. Now look in a dictionary for the word, "Hood" and you get: Middle English, from Old English hōd; akin to Old High German huot head covering, huota guard Noun suffix Middle English -hod, from Old English -hād; akin to Old High German -heit state, Goth haidus way, manner. And perhaps you see that from the common Germanic roots, Hǫðr doesn't mean blind, but concealed like an outlaw perhaps. And then of course, one of Odin's well known aliases was Grimnir, which means, "The Hooded One." So, Robin Hood in the mythical sense could have been allegorical for Odin fighting the giants, and giving the gifts he received from them to man, and that's what Robin Hood did; he took things from the higher authorities, and redistributed some of the wealth to others.

@@madgevanness4011 Steve Roud's 'A Dictionary of English Folklore' makes the point that no historical source ascribes any name to the 'Green Man' (a term only coined in 1939). Art historians call them foliate heads. Any connection to Robin Hood is fanciful nonsense.

Having lived in London 45 years ago whence I was a young lad everyweekend me girlfriend and I took trains buses whatever to find historical spots for picknicks.Twas great times and I consumed many a pint in may local houses of spirits.I even sat at a table where the pilgrims knifed into the date they left for the americas.London as a young man was pretty cool when pints only ran about 35p.I guess things have changed but the countryside of England is one of the best places to explore old legends and history.The thing about the country of England is our american ancestry began there and the people I met in the pubs and parks and places were all so kind to young yanks.I listened to many astory of the pilots who kepted England safe during ww1 and 2.God shaved the Queen,lol.Kinda an inside joke,lolol

In Mirfield near Huddersfield, in West Yorkshire, there is a priesthood of the Christian church ( where they train priests ) . The place and it's lands are strictly private. In a certain part of the garden is a grave and on the gravestone writes... ' herith lay'th robin hood ' Lol I used to go to three nuns regularly when I lived in Mirfield.

This is definitely the best Robin Hood documentary, I recently went in the woods near Kirklees priory and that place is definitely haunted, I don’t know why but I bet robin is Robert earl of Huntingdon from Wakefield, too many things tie in with the story

A detail that will escape most people is this: He was a robber and he wore hood, his gang of robbers wore hoods to avoid being identified..they were the "robbing hoods". the truth lies in front of your noses too close to be seen! Robin Hood is a poetic empirical description to tag a number of people.."He was a Robbing Hood!" to describe a peasant claiming from a lord what was he believes is his..hence the heroic quality of the idea.

The possibility that all of the cases discovered are accounts stemming from the initial green man is also a good case to reinforce legend through the centuries. Meaning that all of the cases would have been part of the overall legend.

Robin Hood was 6ft 1, dark haired, brown eyed and wore a hood:-). The best retelling of the story is by Kip Carpenter staring Michael Praed, as taken off in Maid Marion by dear Sir Tony! Problem was Mike famoulsy cannot see the end of the nose on his face because his sight is so bad so he probably wasn't much cop with a long bow;-)

No mention of the Major Oak in Edwinstow? The tree has been dated by it’s rings and shown not to be old enough to have been around in Robyn’s time. But the tree is still wrapped up in the legends of the area. (Sherwood forest, Nottinghamshire) The tale being, that Robyn would hide within a hole in the oak tree to escape capture by the sheriffs men. Emerging when the coast was clear.
