Maybe the young Jackie Wilson knew his time on earth was going to be short-lived-that would explain why he bolted through life at such a dizzying pace.

One of the reasons Jackie lingered so long was that he was singing "My heart, my heart" and clutching his chest. People thought it was part of the act until he stopped singing and didn't get up. Enough time had passed that his brain was oxygen starved. When I was in high school, our choir performed at Medford Leas, the nursing home where Jackie Wilson was being cared for. Oddly enough, this was the only nursing home I've ever seen that wasn't dreary. They had everything from independent apartments to hospital beds. As we walked down the hospital corridor, entertaining the patients, we passed by Jackie Wilson's room. He was lying in bed, comatose, with an IV. It was very sad to see the man in that kind of shape after seeing him so lively on TV.

@@figmo397 Oh how sad. Many years ago a caller on a radio station requested one of Jackie’s songs. Afterwards the DJ praised him as the greatest singer of our times. He said Elvis Presley admired Jackie both as a singer and a person of generosity. The DJ said that Jackie had no money in his later years and it was Elvis who paid for his care at the facility where he died. He may have had nothing when he left the world but he sure left his mark as one of the greatest singers ever to Grace his public.

Arguably the best male popular singer there ever was, with an unbelievable vocal range. He doubtless was influenced by Roy Brown, who also had a wide vocal range. As great as Clyde McPhatter was with Billy Ward and the Dominoes, Jackie Wilson was even better. He was at his best when he was with the Dominoes. Listen to his "Outskirts of Town." There are notes he hits that don't even seem humanly possible and done with the greatest of ease. No wonder Elvis Presley was absolutely crazy about Wilson. He mentions having watched Wilson four nights straight in Las Vegas in the 1956 "Million Dollar Sessions." Elvis sings a version of "Don't Be Cruel" in those sessions that attempts to replicate how Wilson sang it in Vegas when Wilson tried to replicate Elvis. Elvis said Wilson sang "the hell out of that song." Elvis said had wished he recorded his version of "Don't Be Cruel" the way Jackie Wilson sang it in Vegas. Elvis also helped pay the hospital bill for Wilson when Wilson had the heart attack that rendered him profoundly disabled.

Jackie Wilson once sang Oh Danny Boy, on stage one night. It’s a traditional Irish song. A white man jumped on stage and attacked him for singing that song. Not long after, an audience requested he sing that sing for them. He did. And he got a standing ovation.

Growing up in Detroit as a child my sister and I were friends with his daughter Sandra. We hung out at his home and called his wife Frida ‘Frito.’ I remember one day Frida was missing a ring and Sandra had us remove our clothes to see if we stole it, we didn’t. It’s sad how his life was so fast and ended badly. I hope he’s resting peacefully now as I hope his children are as well. Goodnight Sandra. ♥️

Once again, a hit piece. To compare Wilson with Presley, one had to be there. Jackie sang circle's around Elvis. Elvis actually appropriated his style of singing from Roy Hamilton. So much for the so-called king of Rock and Roll. Jackie created a style all his own. One must remember the era this took place. Alcoholism was rife, the physical abuse of women was a common acceptance. Womanizing was quite common. Therefore Wilson was a man of the time's. I see Jackie for his tremendous talent, and good looks. That made him exceptional. So, might I suggest that this creator be a bit more empathetic when revealing the life of past icon's. Today's artist's aren't much better. With talent comes many temptations, few are capable of avoiding. Do better, and respect those you feel worthy enough to promote you, as a talented (?) commentator. I rest my case. You have a good day, and happy new year l.

Another sad story concerning a beloved entertainer. Jackie Wilson Lived fast and died young. Satan has duped so many of these so called idols with fame and fortunes and then he pulled the rug from under their feet. We've seen this happen too many times. I grew up enjoying Jackie's and others music, but reading about all of the drugs and the whore mongering, the conflicts with band mates, and then dying young. Was it worth it, because at the end of our lives all that matters is where will you spend eternity. Come to Jesus. Amen. Jhn. 3:16-18

A few things... 1. You might've mentioned his 1st single, "The Rainy Day Blues" from 1952 on Dizzy Gillepsie's "Dee Gee label, He sang the vocals, Billy Mitchell did the music. 2. Both McPhatter & Jackie left The Dominoes over money. They were the voices, but just as with the rest of The Dominoes, he paid them a salary, allegedly about $100 weekly. Adding insult to injury, they weren't singing for "The Dominoes", it was BILLY WARD'S Dominos. The Dominoes hired & fired no one, Billy Ward did & both Clyde & Jackie couldn't deal with Ward, his fines & domineering personality as regards salary, fines, uniforms, etc. 3. You might've mentioned the effect that losing his manager, Al Green, just before signing with Decca (which owned Brunswick) had on his career. Green's death, led to Tarnopol becoming his manager.
