When Wanrong became the Empress of China, she was already ruling over a ghost land. In a matter of months, her country abolished the monarchy, turning all Wanrong’s decadent pleasures into dust. Somehow, though, this was just the beginning of her tragic tale. By the end of her life, Wanrong would lose her crown, her child, and most infamously of all, her sanity.

Watch "The Last Emperor" by B. Bertolucci. It's based on Pu Yi's Autobiography and won all 9 Oscars it was nominated for in 1987.

The craziest thing to me about the last Chinese emperor is that he WASN’T EVEN (HAN) CHINESE. The Qing dynasty were Jurgen, or Manchu peoples. Wanrong was Daur, a Jurgen people. The Empress Dowager Cixi - who was in control when Puyi was a child - was the first Chinese leader in 200 years to actually speak Chinese (what we call Mandarin), and it was a novelty.

Very often I don't understand the mindset of the Chinese. Killing her daughter was immoral but it was a widespread practice among the commoners who couldn't either afford or want the child, almost always a female. Astonishingly it happens frequently today in India, for example, But I can think of another example of the apparent hardness and lack of caring towards your own child. For 1000 years most little girls in China had their feet broken and horribly deformed and lived in pain. The binding process was started at about 4 years old and was usually. overseen by the girl's mother. How could a mother do that to her child? The Empress's story. is said in so many different ways.
@theoverunderthinker
@theoverunderthinker 6 ай бұрын
if you try to understand the mindset of the Chinese in the past with the setting of the West in the current era, of course you won't understand. there are a lot of videos about foot binding: basically having small crippled feet were the ticket to a good marriage. there is a move "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" which handles the tensions very well. worth a watch if you want to better understand. probably, you won't understand even then and want to bind your child's feet, but maybe you can appreciate that the issue is more complicated then at first blush. oddly enough, I saw a story a few years ago that the last factory that made shoes for women who had foot binding as a child was closing because they were not selling enough shoes to make a go of it. the last women subjected to it are dying out as the idea of what it beautiful and social norms changed with the age of Mao. Women needed good feet to work alongside the men...comrade! a lot of times people do things that are not understandable because we don't understand the context and pressures those people were under.
@kalevala29
@kalevala29 6 ай бұрын
@@theoverunderthinker I suppose mindset was the wrong term, Perhaps the it's a generalization. I realize this was a practice of the past. To sum it up, my own personal point is that I just don't see how any mother could do that to their child. But of course, you're right, it's a complicated issue. Cheers. Oh, and I've heard of that movie. I would like to see it.
@theoverunderthinker
@theoverunderthinker 6 ай бұрын
@@kalevala29 I was not criticizing you. I was saying that if you knew that if you bound your daughter's feet , she could marry a wealthy man and if you did not, she might marry the butcher, different parents woudl make different choices based upon what they felt was best for their child. you should see the movie. it plays that scenario out pretty well. I wouldn't want to do that to my kid either, but if I were in the time and culture, and raised in it, I might still not be enough "me" to make the same choice. I likely would have different ideas.

A Factual Error: Wanrong was NEVER the "Empress of China". China became a Republic in 1912 when she was only 5. She was married to Puyi ten years later in 1922. When Puyi, Emperor Xuantong of Qing, abdicated in 1912, it marked the end of the Qing dynasty as China's central government. Pursuant to the Instrument of Abdication, which remained legally valid until 1924, the government of Republic of China continued to recognize Puyi's imperial title and treat him according to the protocol befitting a foreign monarch over the next 12 years. In other words, from his accession to the throne in 1908 until Feb 12th, 1912, Puyi was the Emperor of China. From that day onward until 1924, he was the Emperor of Qing (with recognition from Republic of China). In comparison Wanrong was legitimately the Empress of Qing between 1922 and 1924. She was never the Empress of China, however, as China ceased being a monarchy more than a decade before her wedding. 1922 was already the 10th year of the Republic era. The Last Empress of China was Yehenara Jingfen - Empress Xiaodingjing of Qing - the wife of Emperor Guangxu. Jingfen died in 1913. Henceforth China no longer had empress.

There are so many human layers, so many cultural and historical complexities, so many unknown personal developments in the relationship between two women who became wives. Jealousy, fear, paranoia, mistrust, insecurity and the results of a cruel, antisocial husband's manipulation developed into familiarity, empathy, mutual protection and trust in the face of deep unhappiness, confusion and acopia, over a period of time. Not overnight. Imagine being a twelve year old haded over to such a amoral, inept,cluster mess of a sadist? He enjoyed watching the misery he created.

After a few stereotypes proposed by me (mulan for example ) she chose WanRong. As we research into WanRong’s history we realize what a tragic life she had lived despite her wealthy and noble upbringing. Her life could have gone differently, better or worse, in present times, where she may have fared better without the royal tethers. She was so beautiful and talented she had a chance of being successful. Or at the very least a chance of someone who lived a normal and happy life. She never had a choice for freedom and happiness.

We are talking about historical culture. Historically, the average Chinese person was oppressed by their leaders about the same as the average European was oppressed by theirs. @@asmodiusjones9563 It's clear you have misunderstood what I wrote and don't have the knowledge to interpret it. I'm old enough to have experienced the White Terror in Taiwan and my family helped provide food and housing to people escaping the horrors of the Communist regime. Some of us have remained friends to this day. Have you ever heard of, or read the book: "The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck? It led Western people to view Chinese society as depraved; that Chinese people had to be taught social responsibility and how to be "good citizens" according to what the Western world believed was best for mankind. I heard Mao read the book and banned it in disgust. This book was seen as a condemnation of traditional Chinese culture and an indication of how "sinicization" lead to the suffering and poverty of people. Once a best-seller, "literary classic," and required reading, it's now banned from public schools in the US for "racist" content. However, it's still being published because colleges use it as an example of "cultural cognitive dissonance", "colonialism" or "race-washing." It demonstrates how the author interpreted Chinese culture according to her Western Christianity rather than seeking to understand it as unique and independent from her own. When you know the difference, you'll understand that it's far worse than anything Mark Twain ever wrote.

Wow, this is full of inaccuracies. First off, it wasn’t Wanrong who advised the emperor against forming an alliance with the Japanese. It was Wenxiu and because she dared question his decision making, and especially because she did so in public, he beat the crap out of her. This video also leaves gets the most important fact wrong about the relationship between the empress and consort. They had always had a bitter rivalry because the empress was not the favored wife of Pu Yi. When Wenxui fell out of Pu Yi’s good graces, both Pu Yi and Wanrong ganged up on her and by the time they were in exile, it was so bad that Pu Yi issued an edict that Wenxiu was to be put to death. He made sure to only appear in public with Wanrong to punish her and make it clear she was no longer favored. He beat her. She was never allowed to eat with the emperor and empress. They lived together on the second floor of the villa while Wenxiu was forced to live in solitude downstairs. With the help of her sister, Wenxiu eventually escaped and divorced Pu Yi. Without their preferred abuse target around, the relationship between the emperor and empress crumbled and Wanrong soon found herself as the new target of his ire. Wenxiu and Wanrong were never close BUT after they went into exile and Wenxiu’s mistreatment had gotten to a certain point, Wanrong had a moment of pity for her and invited her to dinner with her and the emperor one night to try and fix the dynamics between the three of them. Pu Yi flat out refused and told the empress that if Wenxiu comes for dinner then he’ll excuse himself and just go hungry. Wenxiu was the real tragedy in this story. Wanrong hated her so much that she abused her position as empress from day one just to torture Wenxiu because Wenxiu was always the emperor’s favorite. The things she did, while Wenxiu suffered the mistreatment by Wanrong in silence and acceptance of her role as being subservient to the empress, were absolutely atrocious. Wanrong went beyond the pale in her abuse towards Wenxiu and it started almost immediately after the day the emperor married the two of them.

I would consider the unfortunate possibilities of how a two year old was really treated by the Nannie’s and eunuchs. There might be a revenge motive for his anger at eunuchs. Also, another biographer indicated the empress' horrible treatment of wife #2. So, brutal situations everywhere.

They're not "off shoots." Gengis was a Mongolian and established the Yuan Dynasty. The Manchus are primarily descendents of the Jurchens who migrated west and mixed with other ethnicities to become the Manchus (or Manchurians) who established two Dynasties in China: the Jin and the Qing (the last.)
