The very worst thing what happen to Cass was the affair between Denny & Michelle. She had been in love with him for years. She told Michelle you could have any man why would you take the one person I love. That was a massive divide in the band. They both had now destroyed every person in the band. They were at the height of their fame. Cass was the only person that had a true heart in that whole group. I just wish she would have had more time with Owen and saw much more success. When she died she was solo and packing in the crowds. Sad end to a beautiful voice and soul.

John wrote all the songs and Denny had a powerful voice. this band is one case where all their vocals created the perfect melody… And if even one person stepped out it through the vocals off…. Except Michelle, she was mostly an ornament. They need to make a movie out of this… And Fleetwood Mac. The only two bands whose entire catalog is about 💊 and cheating with their band mates.

@@ckotcher1 Nah... what Michelle "lacked" with her singing ability she amply made up for with charisma. Her singing had personality and she could actually sing... but wouldn't compare her pipes with Cass'... I know she didn't either. Characterizing Michelle as an "ornament" is not accurate... I'll leave that designation for self-describing Pamela Morrison.

Moma Cass didn’t die in a hotel room. She had been lent Harry Nilsson’s Mayfair apartment, and in a further act of tragedy, he lent it to the Who’s Keith Moon, who died there also a few years later. I like this narrator, but he omitted the truly awful behaviour of John Philips, who was his daughter MacKensie’s “lover” for over a decade, well into her twenties. Perhaps our narrator was unaware of just how awful this man was, or merely wished to spare us the ghastly details.
@GonzoHenson

I guess he wanted to edit things down to mostly focus on Michelle. Plus, by the time it happened, he and Michelle weren't as connected as in their early years. I think the scriptwriter would have also had to wrestle with Michelle's attitude with McKenzie's revelation of her abuse. A lot of her family called her a liar, which sadly happens with abuse victims. The victim starts falling down a rabbit hole of destructive behaviors due to their trauma and the family starts thinking of them as a 'problem.' Then, when the abuse is revealed, they think that the victim is lysing or attention-seeking and are unsupportive and disbelieving, furthering the trauma. I don't know if Michelle has become more supportive in future years, but it is a tough dynamic to portray in a short bio. It does, however, add some counterpoint to the notion that, later in life, she became this caretaker and champion of her extended family.

For those that don't know who Chuck Day was, he was much more than a studio musician. He played with Johnny Rivers and came up with the catchy guitar riff in "Secret Agent Man" as well as other great guitar lines. He had a really easy way with a guitar and none the notes he played were forced. The footage of him at 19:05 was taken at 19 Broadway in Fairfax Ca. Chuck was a bartender there and was well known in the Fairfax music scene. I'm not sure how but pretty much everyone knew that Owen was his daughter with Mama Cass. After he passed away (after his third heart attack) there was a memorial at 19 Broadway and Owen was present. That was the only time I ever saw her.

Weird. The hook to get us to watch was about Cass Elliot but the video is really the Michelle Phillips story. We didn't find out anything about Cass as one of the Mugwumps or her interest in musical theatre or her own Variety TV show or her great appearances on Carol Burnett's and Johnny Cash's show. It's a pity that we didn't because I was more interested in knowing about her than Michelle. 🙃

Michelle Phillips is a narcissist who went after whoever and whatever she wanted. She felt zero guilt about breaking up John's marriage to Susan and none for breaking Mama Cass's heart by having an affair with Denny. I don't agree with commenters who say that she had a beautiful voice. She was almost tone deaf and learned her parts note by note. It's particularly obvious when you watch footage of her vocals alone or with her vocals isolated. She was pretty and that was enough to help propel the group to stardom. In a stroke of karma, she married a man who was as horrific as he was talented.

Cass Elliot - Dream a Little Dream of Me. Will never forget that song, those times. I was a little kid who longed to look like Michelle Phillips, because I was the opposite. Ethnic looking. "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers In Your Hair)" was not 'their' song. It was written by John Phillips, but given to his long-time friend, Scott McKenzie. Scott had a terrific range as a vocalist, and had been one of "The Journeymen". He even became a 'Papa' in later configurations of the band. He and I became good friends in his last couple of years, so I had to set that record straight. Just a minor quibble - I love your channel. A bit of trivia: Their song, "Twelve Thirty", was written by John ABOUT Scott, and his struggle to adjust to the sudden fame he experienced when "San Francisco (BStWFIYH)" hit the charts.

It was not up to her to reveal this since Mama Cass made that choice. Such a toxic person. Her bandmate deserved much better than her. Her daughter and husband ( one of the Baldwin brothers) were neighbors for a few years on my street in Santa Barbara. He was so full of himself and was continuously floored that I could not care less if he is fanous. I know a jerk when I see one and he truly was one. The level of self procmainmed impirtance was nauseating. Having that said, there are also genuinely nice celebs too . I just never bought into the extreme worship of fame here in the US. It makes me very sad how Mama Cass was treated and how much heartache she had to endure when truly she made the band great.

She knew that her mom didn’t want the entire world to know this and didn’t speak up until she knew it was going to be released. Michelle was going to sell this info for a lot of money so Cass’s daughter decided to cut her legs off. Cass truly was the band. They, the band and other people tried to paint Cass as a very, very unappeasable diva. Cass took pride in what she did and she took care of her voice from what I’ve heard. Hate to burst Michelle’s bubble but she can’t sing (she had no talent to sing w/ out Cass) no actual acting parts (where she was the lead… always just the supporting actor). Cass deserved so much more than her band mates gave her.

I heard a different story, Cass Elliot revealed the paternity to both john and Michelle Phillips prior to leaving for London. She left explicit instructions that in the case of her early demise they were not to reveal the father's identity before Owen's 19th birthday. And It was at Owen's 19th birthday party they carried out Cass's instructions and told Owen.

Mama Cass was the _Heart and Soul_ of the band. This day and age she wouldn't have needed the band to succeed. She was treated horribly. And Michelle just used and abused everyone she came in contact with. This is a good example of "looks" vs. "talent." I'm certainly not saying that the rest of the band didn't have talent...they absolutely did...I'm talking more about what looks will get you vs what raw talent with no looks gets you *as a female* ...at least back then.
