It isnt. Theres a bug in factorio which makes miners run always (UPS wise) if you face it to a track. ;)

i got this kind of straight cut off ore patches on an old map after the terain changes as i expored futher, a lot of straigth costline or deserts as well and that very high yield is just high richness settings and far away from spawn, the yields get higher the futher u go out

Theres a command to unload unused chunks. You can see your coordinate location in the debug displays. Edit and i just realized how old this video is and those features may not be a thing yet.

But then I'm watching this video, etc 2 and a half years after all this was done so even if I got the save file it probably wouldn't even work for more than 5 minutes before most of the base bottlenecked and totally stalled to zero SPM haha. Two+ years is a *LONG* time when it comes to stuff like this!

@@kyanhluong There's newer bases out there nowadays that work and automate perfectly. This video and save mentioned in it is ancient now. The link mentioned above doesn't even exist anymore haha. Here's a newer base that I'll link that's much better, newer, does 20k SPM and you'll even stay at 60 FPS/UPS the whole time too! It also works perfectly and I've launched nearly 5k rockets. The save starts at 67,250 launched and I've run it for a number of hours and am at 72,438 launched and still maintains 20k SPM and this is as of 01/15/21. Lazy bastard restriction is irrelevant once you have a "shopping mall" built. Logistic bots also help. You can take it a step further for mega bases by making trains full of factory materials ready to order!

Well you heard wrong, as you can see in the video :) Direct loading is the most ups friendly handling of items/ores

I wounder if it would not be more UPS friendly to direct melt the ore. While the amount of materials is increased by 20%. The trains can carry quite a bit more plates than ore. (66% more). Also that removes one level of trains. The level that have the most trains. Also i would argue, that going for direct to steel and direct to sprocket will save even more. Direct to steel increase the load capacity of the trains with a adtionall 4 times, and direct to sprocket increase then with a aditionall 42%. For one pack of each one need 17,5 steel .. eqivalent to 70 plates 12,5 sprocket... eqvivalent to 18 plats. 124 plates. So there is almost as much plate going to steel and sprocket as to the rest. And most of the rest is green circuts. I would say, green circut is probobly the most chalanging part to make really efficent. Even with productivity making the ratio Close to 1:1 .. its really hard to improve it any more than its just naturaly is

Where in the video "i see" that direct train loading is more UPS efficient then not? My guess is that miners->chest-> train would be more efficient. If u direct load into train, all miners will be running at all time (UPS wise) even if there is no train, i dont think thats more UPS friendly. But @matsv I wonder the same, maybe thats the best way.

Well.. Every action takes loop of instruction. For factories and miners its pretty simple. For every tick it run a calculation of how much of a procentage it will manage to do this tick. It calculates Everything, and just multiply with the speed, and then just ad the productity. The graph shows the decimals but trunkate the first number. Say. If you have 60% of production, and it calculate you will ad 60% more, it will caculate 120% but just show 20%. Then the one will be added to the output. If you have say 400% production. It will just take the 60% miltiply it with 4, to get 240%, then trunkate the 2, set 40% value in the graph and put 2 units in the output. So that is literaly a handfull of instructions. The really nice part is that its possible to produce more than 1 units per tic. When it rest it don´t need the Power or swing instruction so its a bit less work, Now inserters. They need on caculation to pick up, one calculation to set down, and then also a ongoing timer calculation for the swing. Of cause a stack inserter can do 12, a normal can do 3. But here is the really intresting part. The inserter will swing regardless of there is 1 or 12 units. For offloading this is really not a problem. But for loading it kind of is. Because if the is say a smelter that just smelt say 1 unit for every sing. The inserter will work at 1/12 of it UPS efficency. So every thing needs to go as freaking fast as possible. Specialy smelters that are quite slow. Green circut is lesser of a problem. So you got for say sprocet Minor -> chest (no inserter) -> Train (full speed)-> Chest (full speed) -> Smelter (low speed) -> chest (low speed) -> Train (full speed) -> chest (full speed) -> Sprocket (medium speed) -> chest (medium speed) -> train (full speed) There is quite a number of steep. Sure most of them is full speed, and there for 1/12 of the UPS. But a lot is low speed, (say 1-3 units a swing) and some is medium speed. Now this scenario in steed. Minor -> Smelter (no inserter) -> Sprocket (lowspeed) -> Chest (medium speed) -> train (full speed) Just reduced the number of moves from 9 to 3. Note, one can have up to 6 smelters feeding the same sprocket factory... but more realisticly 3 or 4. Of cause this have a few drawbacks. 1: You building on ore... well its not really a big problem 2: full 12:4 beacons is not possible all around, this does reduce efficency. 3: balancing is quite a bit harder. But really 10:4 becons should be possible pretty much unverisally For steel production is much simpler of cause, because then its just a streight pul.

Its Worth noting that in the video for the green sprocket production, the builder have gone for a 10:4 build in steed of a 12:4 to reduce one chest and one inserter... i would say this is probobly the most efficent method at least for the green circut production. Of causel.. also for build like plate to steal with a 12:4 layout. Its possible to use a long handle inserter, because it moves 3 a at a time, its still faster than the smelter with max becons.
